Purpendicular: One of DP's Best
« on: June 14, 2018, 02:23:07 PM »
From the opening of "Ted the Mechanic" to the close of "Don't Hold Your Breath", this is an album that has always commanded my full attention when I listen to it. I was crazy for it back in the 90s and I can say it's one that has certainly stood the test of time. "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming" from this album is one of the best songs, ever, regardless of composer.

I remember how this came out after TBRO and the whole breakup with Blackmore, so I was wondering how Morse would sound with the rest of the band. Some things he did took getting used to, but I can say that I loved it from the start. He was right for the band, and I'm glad they went with him. His style can be playful, to match the rest of the band's desire to have a little fun, as opposed to the ultra-serious Blackmore way. Personally, I think it's better than anything the Mk2 reunion did, Perfect Strangers included.

Ah you saw I got this as my workout music for this week? :D

Yes agreed with everything you said...one of Purple's best albums for sure. The band was firing on all cylinders and Morse proved right from the gate he was the perfect choice for Purple!

It's definitely an older and wiser Purple that's making this record. You can tell that they plan to keep on rocking, but their knees are starting to hurt, so they got to pace themselves.

I think that's really a hallmark of the Morse era. They're not going to push themselves, but work on their own schedule, at their own pace.

I also think that Purpendicular is the most versatile album Purple has ever done...there's a whole lot going on with the fast rockers (Ted) to mid tempo songs (Cascades) to experimental (Rosa's Cantina which is one of my absolute favourites) to acoustic (The Aviator) to an absolute epic (Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming)...it's got it all.

It certainly does have it all. I think there were a lot of songs in Gillan's notebook that he wanted to work on and the burst in creativity with _|_ (see what I did there to abbreviate the album name? :smug:) shows that. I know I've criticized other albums for having tracks that were CD filler, but this is one that is essentially a deluxe release from the start. It's every bit as adventurous as Fireball, if not more so.

It's also a very good-humored album, what with the wry lyrics of "Ted" and "Almost Human". Considering it's considerably longer than Machine Head, I'd say that _|_ represents more value for your music-buying dollar than almost any other DP album at the same price point.

Something really odd happened last night...I have the Radio Rock station on in my work car and there's the morning show re-runs with a playlist jukebox and a soft intro started which got my interest...I went hey I know this one...but it can't be that song...no way...can't be played on radio...and then I put the volume up and then: "While you were out....the message says..."

SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE SCREAMING on radio!!!! That made my night!
