Finding Solace
« on: June 03, 2018, 10:03:48 AM »
Solace is finding comfort in times of sadness or distress. It is finding calm as storms whirl around you.

How do yo find solace?

For me, it can often be when there is rain outside and I go to my front porch swing to watch the rain fall. Yes, there is a storm, but each individual drop of rain soothes me.

Interesting question.

For me, I find solace in different things depending on the circumstance. Just being in the outdoors (wild nature) provides some. Reading the Gilgamesh epic and reflecting on the fact that it is the oldest written story in human history and realizing that things just haven't changed all that much during the intervening millennia also grants me a bit of solace.

Laying in bed on a Sunday morning and holding my wife does it. So does watching my grandkids run around without a care in the world.

Knowing that everyone who has ever walked the earth has either already died or will die at some point does as well. It sounds morbid on the surface, but for me it just reaffirms my belief that we are all equal, great or small, and deserving of love, care, concern, and respect.

I find solace in music especially Classical and Jazz.

I find solace in a good Star Trek episode. I really mean that.

I find solace in reading a great book.

Exercising.

Wandering the Halls of nature.

And, oh yeah...

Drinking!

For me it's always been music...Sitting in the dark and just letting the music sink in....

Nowadays running is also something that helps...you can kind of reset your mind while doing that. Not really think about anything but just concentrate on the next step and hop over a root on the ground...very relaxing.

Good television is helpful as well...especially for me shows that have a strong family unit or a group of good friends since I don't have either...I can then live vicariously through them...although it can sometimes make me even more sad though realising it is something I can never have but most of the time it's helpful.

Had a nice rain this morning, quite nice...

Sometimes, a cat deciding it's time I petted it will really get my mind off of troubles.

Been on my own most of my life.  Expect to be for the rest of my life.  On the rare occasion such thoughts start to weigh me down, I put on one of my favorite Sabbath cd's and the weight is immediately lifted.  This has never failed.

Charg and Ty - I just want you to know that we are your friends and you are not alone here at the Community!!
I can relate as I am basically alone, thousands of miles away from any family and only a few "friends" whom are more like acquaintances really.  I expect to die alone and even though I will be dead and most likely will not give a damn then - now I think of were my oversized CD collection will end up. Probably in the garbage since that is the policy at the place I live if no family or close friends are involved after my passing.

I guess what I am saying is I care about you guys - we are friends!! We are family

^^Nicely stated Thel. It's just a pity we all live so far away from each other and aren't able to catch up in person.

I think it's fair to say we all find some solace in being part of this great community, chatting, giving our thoughts and sharing stories on a daily basis.

Ty mentioned BS for solace. "Spiral Architect" is my go-to in that category. I feel like listening to the song cleanses me somewhat.

I had a cup of mushroom tea this Saturday that gave me incredible solace. But i need to find better, more "normal" and lasting solutions for everyday life. Having a good rehearsal comes close...

Thanks Thel and Jack!

Yes I should have also mentioned this place for sure....I don't have a lot of contact with people in general so this place certainly has provided some of that. And it great to be a part of a community such as this...
