DIO - Sacred Heart

Happy 33rd Birthday to SACRED HEART!
This final album of the first incarnation of the DIO band is a bit of a mixed bag...on one side it has fantastic tracks like King Of Rock 'n Roll, the title track, Rock 'n Roll Children and Just Another Day...but on the other hand it also has tracks like Hungry For Heaven, Fallen Angels and Shoot Shoot which can NOT be included among DIO's best tracks, not by a long shot.
It was becoming quite evident that Vivian Campbell had lost all interest in the band by this point and his playing had become quite stale at places...especially with his solos.
Campbell did leave in the middle of the Sacred Heart Tour with a loud bang and frankly that was the best thing that ever happened to DIO as the replacement was a guitarist that can play circles around Campbell and leave listeners dazed...and ofcourse the album that followed this one is on a completely other level compared to this one.
However this still remains a classic DIO album and like I said it has tracks that I truly and utterly love...but I cannot help but wonder how awesome this album could have been if Viv "the Dick" Campbell had took off before this and Craig Goldy would have been on it...

Not sure if you're being serious Charger but as good as a replacement Goldy was he wasn't fit to carry Vivian's bags. I was a huge fan of Vivian and remember being quite devastated when Intermission came out and discovering Vivian was out of the band and having tickets to see Dio live only a month or so later.

Gig ended up being amazing though...

Personly I don't think Goldy would've made much difference to Sacred Heart as Ronnie had decided he was going for a more commercial sound with that album which was a reflection of the times. Even the studio track from Internission Time To Burn with Goldy was quite commercial sounding.

Dream Evil was a better and heavier album I agree but I put it down to the thrash movement really breaking out and becoming big in 86 and a lot of the classic acts like Dio, Ozzy, Priest and Maiden deciding to return to a harder sound in 87/88 in comparison with their previous more commercial albums from 85/86.

Dio unfortunately was never able to top those first two solo albums with Vivian no matter which guitar player he had in the band.

Craig is far superior to Campbell...always has been always will be.

Viv's a good player too but he doesn't really come close to the versatility and emotion Craig has in his playing. Viv's playing has always left me cold no emotion what so ever...but then again he probably didn't have a whole lot of positive emotions playing music he didn't really like to begin with anyways....and the fact that the guy is a complete and utter asshole doesn't help either I suppose.. ;D And comparing him to Craig who is one of the nicest guys in the world...

On the other analysis of the times I do agree with...mid 80s did see the commercial side breaking out with all big metal bands.

I think you'd be in a small minority with your thoughts on Goldy v Campbell. Lack of emotion or fire is one thing I wouldn't accuse Campbell of..Every riff and solo on those first two Dio albums are quite memorable.
