Seventh Star vs Fused
« on: May 23, 2018, 06:54:02 AM »
Outside of several Tony Martin albums, Glenn Hughes' stint with Black Sabbath on Seventh Star is one of the weakest of the BS catalog. But then, years later, the collaboration between Hughes and Iommi made for some much better material. Why the difference? Drugs? Personal issues? Or just the roll of the dice that happens whenever a band gets together to record an album?

Musically I think Tony was in a much better place with Fused.

Glenn's vocals are just as bad on both so that's not really the issue, but musically Fused is so brilliant that I always keep wishing that there would have been an actual singer singing those fantastic songs.

I think Tony was pretty wasted during Seventh Star and we all know how Glenn was back then so that probably made a difference..

But also I do thing Tony was in a much better place and he had Mike Exeter and Bob Marlette with him on Fused and that I believe made a huge difference.

Well, question... do you like Glenn Hughes as a singer overall and just find these efforts to be his weaker efforts?

When I hear Hughes doing material from SS or Fused in his solo performances, I think that it's not the players that made a difference, but the way the songs were played. Fused material works great in the Iommi-Hughes style or when Hughes takes the songs and makes them all his own. SS flat out sounds better when it's Hughes solo because he can rework the arrangements and make them sound less 80s power metal and more soulful.

I do NOT like Glenn as a singer in anything. His over pompous style just isn't for me.

So you're pretty much listening to the guitar and wishing that the singer would just shut up... I guess Glenn is to you as Dio is to Billy. :smug:

That post made me search for a video of Dio and Hughes singing together...

:problem:

But I couldn't find one.

I don't think Ronnie ever preformed anything with Glenn although they were good friends.

That sums up exactly how I feel about Tony Martin, with the added annoyance of not being able to stand the sight of him as well

First of all you're talking about an almost 20 year time frame between these two albums. SS was Tony's baby with Glenn along for the ride. I like to think of it as Tony's experiment, truly a solo album with great music and great vocals.

I believe Fused was more of a collaboration getting back to "kick you in the balls" rock and roll. I believe they both still stand up in the time period they represent.

??? This said by a Power Metal fan? Wow... Ok, it's James Brown wannabe he's doing, but that's not the same as being pompous, atleast not like the Metal vocalists you like, everyone from Dio to Jørn Lande... IMO, ofcourse. Which is the objective truth... :))

Objection! I've always maintained it's not only Dio's vocals that's ruining those Sab albums for me. I can't just faze out the vocals and enjoy the music, because the music is static (esp. with the bass & drums), and the sound and songwriting is way off the rails from what i want from my Sabbath. They're embrasing the 80's too much.

Back on topic; might the difference between them be due to the difference between 1985 and 2004? (how sound, style and trends have changed esp...)

Could the difference also be in record labels? SS was with a label that demanded another BS album, Fused was with a label that let Iommi do whatever he felt like doing. Could SS have been better if Iommi didn't have to make a metal album?

Well since Fused is 14 times heavier than SS I seriously doubt that is the problem....

Yeah, that does kinda take the air out of my argument, there... but maybe Iommi didn't want to do a metal album in 1987?
