Overplayed classics
« on: April 21, 2018, 04:29:00 AM »
A thread meant to have a second view and review of great tunes that've been ruined by being played too much, to understand there's a reason they're overplayed in the first place. Because they're damn good. And there's more than Paranoid, Smoke On The Water and Stairway To Heaven...

My first contribution:

- Breaking the Law and Living after Midnight .
Two classics of the band, although very average compositions especially the second. LAM looks like an commercial for some chewing gums brand.
I just can not hear 3 notes of each anymore.

- Highway To Hell . great song but really overplayed . Still works when we hear the entire album.

^^^ Great pickings!

As for JP, BtL is the better tune of the two. A through&through Heavy Metal Classic which in many ways define a whole genre in one single "hit". LAM is more a Pop Hard Rock gem, and understandibly the bigger hit in a mainstream casual audiences viewpoint. Can't stand it, love it  :))

HtH.. goddamned...

I never put any of these on myself any longer, but if they suddenly come up at a party or on the radio...
If any of these tunes doesn't put you in a good-time hard Rockin' party-mood, there's seriously something wrong with you.  :beerbang:

You really got Me , covered by Van Halen.

Strangely, Jump still works. This intro and sound of keys typically 80s so catchy , these few seconds waiting for the moment when Alex attacks his so recognizable beat.

Ah ! another one : Empty Rooms by Gary Moore , except for the live version of We Want Moore, of course.

Enter Sandman, or when the Met 'rip off AC/DC.
So tiring from the 5th listening ...  and the counter has more than 10,000 today .

Disagreed. Luckily i was a fan of Kinks before i even heard VH, so i've got no other than bad relations to them doing that cover, and hence it's never been overplayed either. Rather shut off as fast as possible, such blasphemy...

Enter Sandman; what a fucking great tune from a craftsmanships perspective. THE perfect Metal hit at the very end of Metals most successful era as part of the mainstream Pop music, killing Glam while also giving way to the "new" Metal harking back to classic Metal (that is Groove and Grunge, NOT Nu-Metal...).
I have to say i hear more a Sabbath rip-off than AC/DC rip-off, though, but i think/guess your point was more about that "going back to classics" thing?

Nontheless, because of this and the Thrash vote i'm going to treat myself with the Black Album right now.

Already well into Sad But True as i'm typing this. HEAVY!!!

I was just gonna say Sad But True...man that gets played to death on radio rock....and it's a pretty weak song too...

Ace Of Spades comes to mind...a killer track but everytime when it's Motörhead it's always Ace Of Spades...

Actually Highway To Hell isn't the most played AC/DC song here...that'd be TNT...another great song but waaaaay too much air time.

Kiss' I Was Made For Loving You gets played a lot too...and I don't really like Kiss to begin with....

Gonna throw in one more Ozzy's Crazy Train....it's not even close to being the best one on Blizzard and it's the only one that ever gets played...

With good reasons. Try to explain "Dirt-Rock/Metal" to an alien; play them Ace Of Spades...

I can't stand Layla by Derek and the Dominoes anymore... that whiny guitar solo at the end is just like finger nails dragged down the blackboard to my ears.

And then there is Bohemian Rhapsody... love the song but I can't bear to hear it broadcast unless there is a good reason such as the "greatest rock tracks of all time top 10 run down".

Another Brick in the Wall... yes it was a big hit single... yes it is *quite* good... but why play this when Floyd have done so much better!

true.
mainstream news radios broadcast play it from time to time. Tired and often out of place.
the worst is that our Rock culture is so poor that they still confuse Queen and Freddy Mercury when they announce which title has just been played, often cut before the end. Without laughing.

Off topic but in the same vein, the "specialist" of the only live music show announced Adrian Vandenberg and his new band by proclaiming just before they start playing : "and please welcome the one who played with Ritchie Blackmore ". I saw a short but heavy moment of loneliness in Adrian's eyes ...

There are about 1000 songs or so in the Classic Rock repertoire, I've seen a few "Top 1000" lists, and every Top 100 list pulls from those tunes.

And every time, EVERY TIME "China Grove" rolls around, it's a party.

EVERY DAMN TIME! :batdance:

It's that opening CHUCKA-DOW-WOWWW CHUCKA-DOW-WOWWW CHUCKA-DAT DAT-DAT DAT-DAT riff that drives the whole song, all the way to the end, save for that pretty little bridge in the middle that has a party all its own going on.

Another one that shows up all the time that really doesn't ever get overplayed is Jethro Tull's masterwork, "Living in the Past." The opening flute solo that sets up the handoff to the vocals is sheer brilliance. I'll never skip tunes or switch stations if that rolls around on the Classic Rock 1000.

^^^ That's the first one mentioned i might actually put on myself every now and then, not just enjoy when it suddenly comes along. I don't think it's even possible to actually overplay it either... :)
