Tyr have you read The Walking Dead comics?

I've skimmed through a few in a bookstore but the drawing style is so horrible I can't imagine reading them...no matter how good the story is...
No , not at all. Atrocious drawing indeed  :D
This kind of story must be supported by much more powerful visuals. At least in color...

Agreed. This was meant to be a tv show for sure! :)

Yeah. Philippe Druillet.

I knew that these particular drawings reminded me of something:
Here's the artwork of the second album of Sortilège, a Heavy Metal band that was successful in the 80s.

We've got a healthy stock of cartoonists in Norway, inspired by Mad and The Far Side there was a "farts & tits"-type humour magazine called Pyton (which in Norwegian also means disgusting) from the mid 80's till the mid 90's who was the schooling of many greats, some are now editors, writers and cartoonists for the Norwegian Donald Duck magazine.
My fave of these, the team of Nærum/Midthun also sell stories internationally.
The biggest original success coming from this scene is probably Nemi, about a Goth girl. Fell off that bandwagon when she got her own magazine, she was alot better when she was a side-series in the Far Side (the crazy world of Larson, as it was called) and Ernie magazines.

As for stuff you've actually heard of, i've been into most of what's already been mentioned at one point or another, but the ones who'll always stick with me (along with some Norwegians) are the classics of Carl Barks and Don Rosa. With Rosa you don't just get great drawings and exiting elaborated stories, but you can actually learn some history too.
I also like some newer Donald Duck artists like Marco Rota and Vicar. Rotas Andold "Wild Duck" Temerary (which in Norwegian is a Viking, ofcourse), Rosas The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck and Rosas sequels to Barks stories rank high.

Never been into superhero comics, i think it's the way they're drawn that puts me off. Likewise there's few long-stories comedy i like too, i prefer strips and one-liners.

His "A Contract with God" is a must-read.

I'm not into Marvel or DC, really. Also not really anime. Euro comics are where I'm mostly at, with some American independents.
