Favourite Comics and Strips
« on: April 02, 2018, 09:38:46 AM »
Saw a little bit of discussion on another thread about comics so time for thread!

What are your favourite comics? You still read 'em or do you think they are just for kids and dummies? Well if so stay clear from this topic then! :D

Disney's Donald Duck comics are my hobby. I've got a fairly decent collection of them. In Finnish. I've got all the Donald Duck magazines (Aku Ankka in finnish)from 1972 to 2009 (52 numbers per year), All the Donald Duck pocket books (Aku Ankan Taskukirja in finnish) that have ever been published (462 numbers) all the Uncle Scrooge (Roope-Setä in finnish) pocket books (452 numbers in total) and tons of other hard cover books (all of Don Rosa's works obviously as well as most of Carl Barks') and other stuff.

Disney has always been #1 for me but I also collect some other stuff.

I have all the original Asterix comics (most in first editions)
About 20 or so Lucky Luke's
Several Iznogood's
All the Oumpah-Pah books

So Coscinny and Uderzo are also dear to me.

I also have 4 big books of Calvin & Hobbs which is my favourite comic strip. In english ofcourse.

One thing that I've never gotten into are the superhero comics. Never liked that drawstyle of them, plus they never really appealed to me on any level. I do love superhero movies though...

No superheroes here, either, except for Frank Miller's brilliant "The Dark Knight" and a holiday Superman comic in which he fights world hunger.

From my youth, Tintin, Lucky Luke, one Iznogood, loads of Asterix, got a few Smurf books, the Calvin and Hobbes boxed set, Dork Tower, Bone, some Usagi Yojimbo, Cerebus up to the end of "Church and State", What's Michael, Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind, The Incal, Metabarons, Technopriests, some one-off titles from Les Humanoids, lots of Kyle Baker stuff, MAD magazine from 1955-1974, "Wormy" from Dragon Magazine before Dave Trampier decided to check out, quite a few upscale "Classics Illustrated", and, yeah, not a lot of series books, I prefer the graphic novel / BD format.

I still have my collection of B.C. and Wizard of Id books.  Around 30 altogether.

Although Hergé is Belgian and not French, I'm amazed by the fact that his international fame is not a legend just like those of Uderzo and Goscinny. Unbelievable.
no fan of the famous Edgar P. Jacobs "Black and Mortimer"?

I've got a pair of those books in French, but I haven't had time to sit down and force myself to learn enough French to make sense of them. But they did appeal to me as a sort of Tintin for grownups.

If only Enki Bilal were able to do Tintin, I think I would love it... again, Tintin for grownups is a big win for me.

I have to say I never really got into Tintin...I think I have two albums but they never really sunk in...I suppose it was the lack of humor compared to Asterix and such.

Wizard Of Id!! Now that's a great strip too! I think I should buy a book or two of those too in English...same goes with Garfield.

There is another rather great strip called Larson out there...it's a mostly just a single frame strip and at times it can be absolutely HILARIOUS!

Edit:
I'm gonna edit the title to include strips too! They are a huuuuge part of the comic world after all!

^ In the USA, they're known as "The Far Side". I love them, very witty.

I also like me some XKCD.

Tyr have you read The Walking Dead comics?

I've skimmed through a few in a bookstore but the drawing style is so horrible I can't imagine reading them...no matter how good the story is...

In comics, I think I prefer a serious, direct style to a more painterly style for my action comics. If it's funny stuff, then bulbous noses are the best. :)

No , not at all. Atrocious drawing indeed  :D
This kind of story must be supported by much more powerful visuals. At least in color...
