Elves, I think this video of Fenriz (Darkthrone) teaching the origins of Black Metal  is very instructive :

Thanks for your input TYR, greatly appreciated and thank you for the video, very informative Fenriz knows his stuff, Slayer was respected by the Black Metal guys, that’s cool.

I like Venom, Mercyful Fate and soon when I get my Mayhem bootleg I’ll let you guys on here know how I like them, will also be checking out Bathory and Darkthrone as per your recommendations TYR, thank you very much.  :metal1: :headbanger:  :guitar:

Well eventhough techincally Slayer isn't black metal I can imagine that most black metal bands would consider Slayer something of an influence...they played fast and their lyrics were quite often quite satanicly inclined.

^ My wife and youngest daughter just found the doll re-painting videos on YouTube. I see it's also a thing among death metal ladies, as well.

Interesting intersection, to say the least.

For my money Celtic Frost were the first Black Metal band. Along with Venom and Bathory these three bands would set the ball rolling for the genre.
Yes Darkthrone is Fenriz's band. The absolute pinnacle of Black Metal if you ask me.
This is what I’ve heard, but when you watch the interviews of the second wave of Black Metal guys they say Venom weren’t Black Metal, and many sight Euronymous has the guy who got the real Black Metal sound down.
Real Black Metal ?!?
Let all these bands be imaginative and propose another name of this music  genre.
Venom is and will remain the band that created Black Metal. It's as simple as the title of their second album. Welcome to Hell is even more raw and primary. The album is released in 81.
Hellhammer then Celtic Frost came second , followed by Bathory who offers something faster than Venom on the first 4 albums then changes and lays the foundation for Vicking Metal from Hammerheart.
Mercyful Fate has also contributed to the emergence of Black Metal although their music is clearly heavy as the first 2 albums of Slayer. If Bathory played so fast, it was Slayer 's influence.
After and only after, Norway knows a wave of new generation called Black Metal again,  very inspired by 3 pioneers pre-cited.
And here I would like to stand up against this false idea, this lie as to the name of this Scandinavian wave. It's simply a patronymic theft. The name Black Metal is nowadays very overused with a whole lot of more or less inspired subgenres.
I understand this desire to put this name so incredibly Evil on a form of extreme music but this form of Black Metal is a derivative of what Venom has generated. Once again, Venom is and will remain first. So Venom plays Black Metal.
All the rest is revionnism.

Excellent points my friend. I know that Venom are the birthers of Black Metal, but I still always think of Celtic Frost when I think of what it means to be Black Metal.

Every single Darkthrone album has something great to offer.

These three are their absolute classics.

This one however is my favorite album by them.

Incorporated traits of punk and traditional heavy metal on this one.

No problem, I think you will find Darkthrone a one of a kind experience.

Not all that of a fan of Bathory, I would defer to Tyr66 in this area.

Excellent advise Thel ' !  :abbath:
Elves, First, I can advise you obviously the first album in a pure Black Metal style and Under The Sign of The Black Mark followed by the masterpiece Blood Fire Death.
If you have the time, I strongly advise you to listen to the 2 tracks present on the compilation Scandinavian Metal Attack (1984), Bathory did not have the sound and speed of the first album yet but the titles have become legendary and cult.
Jonas Åkerlund, future director of Lords Of Chaos,  played drums on these tracks.
Then the style of Quorthon evolves to a new genre, a more slow , epic and arranged style very inspired by the middle-aged Viking world full of   legends and pagan Gods, filiation father to son, respect for Nature. Hammerheart is excellent, Twilight of the Gods a must. Do not miss the masterpiece in two acts: Nordland I and II.
Enjoy !!  :abbath: :guitar:

Thank you Thel and Tyr66, I must admit that I am not a fan of Black Metal, Bathory and Venom are as far as I go.
