So, yeah. The Beatles. Can you dig it, man?

First question is, were they better with facial hair or without? My vote is with.

To phrase it in other words: Beatles in black & white or in colours.
Most def. colours.
If Sabbath are subjectively the best band in the world, Beatles are objectively the best.

I gotta say I never got into the Beatles...I have always found them to be among the most overrated bands in history.

That being said, one cannot deny that they had a lot to do with the beginning of commercial rock and even hard rock in a way as a lot of hard rock artists say that Beatles were their inspiration.

But I personally though don't find anything of interest in them. My mom though is a fan.

I had my Beatles phase, started a Beatles tribute band in college in fact. I don't listen to them much anymore, kind of overloaded myself ( don't listen to Sabbath much anymore either!) But yeah, thems the guys

Myself, the compositions George Harrison wrote on Revolver and afterward are the ones that I keep coming back to the most. "Something" is one of my absolutely favorite songs, ever.

Charger's comment about their commercialism is interesting in that I think it was the fact that they were so popular, they couldn't do *anything* without it being commercially successful. Except for Magical History Tour. That was a real train wreck... but their albums got to be popular just because they were popular.

When Paul wrote songs that John described as "music for the grannies", I don't think that he was selling out or going commercial. He was exploring a connection between rock and English Music Hall tunes, to see if that would work out, to make songs more dramatic. So does that make him pretentious? Perhaps, although I think he delivered on his vision with stuff like "Elanor Rigby" and "Martha, My Dear".

My mom, on the other hand, absolutely hates The Beatles. She can tolerate Yellow Submarine because it's a kid's movie and I loved it as a kid. But all The Beatles records in my house were my dad's.

The Cat Stevens records, on the other hand, were my mom's... but, then again, Cat Stevens never recorded "Helter Skelter."

Harrisons tunes are always the best. Which the first solo-albums show too, which is alot of stuf that "didn't make it" in Beatles.

Brainwashed is the greatest musical testament ever made.

That was his last album, right? You know, I never gave that a listen, at least not yet. Time to correct that.

I'm curious as to what makes you prefer The Doors.

John Lennon wrote my favorite Beatles tunes. Tomorrow Never Knows, Dear Prudence, I am the Walrus, I'm only Sleeping, Norwegian Wood, main part of Day in the Life, you've got to hide your love away are a few that come to mind

Jim Morrison. The Death keyboards. They didn't have a long enough career to make a bad album. They didn't have a pop/ Beatlemania phase. The infamous concerts of The Doors, Beatles didnt even tour when they were making music i liked. The band is mystical, mysterious and exciting especially during hippy flower power 60's. Man I love The Beatles, but I can do without their any of their stuff pre Help! Album. Just my 2 cents.

Yup. Do yourself that favour. Was working on it the last years, finished by Dhani Harrison and Jeff Lynne after his wishes.

All great tunes too. Beatles were lucky to have three brilliant songwriters. And Ringo. :)

I like the Beatles from about 1966 onwards. I not a fan of their early stuff. I would say that even their later output is patchy, for instance I only really like about half of Sgt Peppers... but some of that "half" is amazing.

Definitely for me, the later the album, the better I like the album. Once they got away from the screaming girls in the crowds, they really put down some excellent tunes. True, I also will pick winners and losers on the albums. I think about 3 sides' worth of songs from The White Album can be kept, don't need all of Paul's songs on Sgt. Pepper, can live without The Sun King on Abbey Road, and Let It Be really deserves to be done without Phil Spector's production on painfully over-done "The Long and Winding Road".

Go to 8:56 for a much better, stripped-down version of the song. I find it much more tender done this way.

The only true Let It Be is Let It Be... Naked. And not one tune could be left out, esp. Abbey Road. Ok, maybe some from White Album then... Sun King is the perfect start for the "side b epic".
