Another great live album IMO. I am not a big fan of their studio sound, I live their live sound better, and I love the setlist on this release.

Savatage is one of my favourite bands! And probably my favourite outside the Sabbath family... This live album is a fitting tribute to Criss as was absolutely on fire during the Hall Of The Mountain King and Gutter Ballet tours!

He truly was special and without that drunk driving dickhead he would have probably become one of Heavy Metal's most iconic guitarists. There is so much emotion in his playing it's almost unreal. Especially live.

For a few years I listened even more to Savatage than I did to Sabbath. In the long run, I prefer Sabbath, but luckily I don't have to choose. Jon's singing was amazing but he totally killed his voice. I really liked all Sava albums from HOTMK to DWD, though all the canons and orchestra stuff on HOR and DWD was a little too much for me. I love the Streets album though. Saw them live in 1995, Zak Stevens is an amzing live singer.

Yeah Jon really pushed himself bit too far...but the problem with him was he had zero singing training up to that point so he didn't really know how to preserve his voice. After that he went on to get some vocal lessions and learned how to control things better and ofcourse got back on top shape again.

Zak was a great choice from Criss and Jon and Paul for sure. Extremely talented. Have you checked out his band Circle II Circle? Some truly awesome stuff there too.

The Wake Of Magellan is my favourite with Zak although they are all great.

I am gonna edit this topic a little bit and make this our official SAVATAGE thread. We surely need one here!

I have checked out C2C at some point, but I don't really remember how I liked them - will have to try again. Wake of Magellan did have some good tunes, but for me it all started to get a little boring there, and like with DWD, I didn't really like the songs with Jon on vocals. Good idea to make this an offical Sava thread, that's indeed needed.
Have you heard the this live rendition of Strange Wings, with Jon Oliva and Ray Gillen sharing vocal duties? I tend to forget that the studio recording feat. Ray too:

I find Criss' guitar amazingly beautiful, by the way:

Yeah I have that show on DVD and audio...fantastic preformance..Anaheim 1990.

Savatage guys and Ray Gillen were good friends.

The band wasn't the same without Criss but it was a good decision for them to keep going. Chris Caffery is almost as good as Criss was and Al Pitrelli was wonderful. And ofcourse Paul O'Neill's lyrical genius was undeniable.

Yeah for sure...

And it's crazy the ammount of shit Jon“s been through in the last few years first he had a stroke, then he crashed his car and was arrested for having some drugs on him, his father died, his wife died and his son died....my god...It's incredible that the man has anything left to make music with...can't help but feel really sorry for the man...and he is such a nice guy too...
