Ronnie Talks Holy Diver
« on: May 05, 2026, 08:13:20 AM »
Here's a cool little page I came across on facebook from Classic Rock Magazine about Ronnie talking about each of the songs on the album...I'm assuming this was in 1983 or 1984?

Sadly there is no date on the magazine.

The questions (and answers) are bit on the humoristical side.

He says "we used tape in those days", so it would be after digital to digital became a thing. Digital encoding to tape was going on since 1972, mostly for jazz and classical music. 1984 had the first pop DDD release, a Peter Gabriel album. Mid-80s is when digital recording became more a thing, but even then there was Digital Audio Tape (DAT) for recording. 1993 saw the first digital-to-hard drive recording and around 1999, that was commercially used.

With the URL for Classicrockmagazine.com on the bottom of the page instead of "Classic Rock Magazine", it's clearly in that late-90s/early 00s era when there was still print media and it all had the online presence advertised.

And then I decided, aw hell, just search on the title. classicrockmagazine.com redirects to https://www.loudersound.com/features/dio-holy-diver-interview and the whole interview is there... at the bottom:

"The original version of this feature appeared in Classic Rock 86, published in November 2005."

At least I read up on the history of digital recording in the process... :D
