A Couple of Recommendations
« on: April 24, 2026, 01:46:14 PM »
Typhon's post about Patriot Day got me thinking, and alhough I'm not a historian, and don't really know anymore about the history of the United States than any given person, the following two texts sit high in the library of my heart and I very much recommend them to anyone interested. One is a full-on book, the other is a pamphlet. One is an analysis, the other is propoganda. They're both worth the time.

Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville

This book feels rather modern despite being written in the 1830s. He doesn’t just describe American society — he dissects its habits, contradictions, and quiet assumptions with a kind of precision that still holds up today. What makes it especially worth reading is his ability to see both the strengths of democracy (individual liberty, civic participation) and its potential pitfalls (conformity, tyranny of the majority). It is less a history lesson and more a like a lens that you can use to interpret the present intersection of culture, institutions, and human nature.

Common Sense by Thomas Paine

Common Sense is short, direct, and hits like a hammer. Written in plain language for ordinary people, it strips away the mystique of monarchy and argues, recklessly for its time, that independence is not just possible but necessary. The reason to read it today isn’t just historical curiosity; it’s to experience how powerful clear, persuasive writing can be when it meets the right moment. The urgency jumps out of every page, and it’s a sharp reminder that ideas, when expressed simply and forcefully, can move entire nations.

I would argue that Common Sense was the most influential piece of writing in U.S. history.  It broadened the thinking of so many people.

Thanks Mr. Paine.

Paine had quite the colorful history, making enemies for advocating such radical notions as abolishing property ownership requirements for vote enfranchisement.
