New Iommi album in the works
« on: June 13, 2024, 07:13:50 AM »
In an interview Tony has said he is working on a new album.

Black Sabbath legend Tony Iommi has confirmed that he will release a third solo album.

During a recent interview on the Full Metal Jackie radio show in the US, Iommi said he’s hard at work on his first solo record in two decades.

Asked what he’s up to at the moment, Iommi said: "I am writing stuff now for my own, for an album. So that's exciting too. And there's no pressure. I just do stuff when I feel like it, because, obviously, I've got a life to live and I like to do all the different stuff.

“But I've really enjoyed doing this stuff, as I did with Ozz when I'd done a couple of tracks for his last album ('Patient Number 9'), which was good, to work with Ozz again. And I'm quite open for all that now. Whatever comes, and I like it, I do it."

Commenting on whether it will be a “proper record” or just individual tracks, Iommi added: "No, I'm gonna do a record. And I've got a lot of stuff. But now we're actually getting around to sort of putting it together, myself and the engineer.

“So it's been good fun, really. And as I say, there's no pressure. I can just do it — I don't have to do it by next week. And because of everything else that’s been lurking around, I have to take my time in doing things. But it's been fun. And that's what it's all about, really. And I'm looking forward to actually doing it and an album coming out."

Tony Iommi’s first solo album, ‘Iommi’, was released in October 2000 and it boasted a smorgasbord of guest performers including Ozzy Osbourne, Bill Ward, Billy Idol, Dave Grohl, Henry Rollins, Skunk Anansie’s Skin, Serj Tankian, Brian May, Matt Cameron, Billy Corgan, and Ian Astbury.

Five years later he released ‘Fused’, a collaborative album with Glenn Hughes who briefly fronted Black Sabbath for their ‘Seventh Star’ record – an album originally intended to be Iommi’s first solo release.

Tony Iommi released his first solo song in eight years, the instrumental 'Scent of Dark', in November 2021.

There are some factual errors in the article, but it's Planet Rock so it's only to be expected!

I saw/read this announced yesterday.  There has been social media speculation about whether it will be an instrumental album only or if songs w/vocals will be present, and if it's the latter, which vocalist(s) might appear on the release?

Yeah...

I'm not sure which one I'd like more...an album with just one vocalist or several? I do remember Tony saying in some interview that he would never do another one like Iommi again with multiple singers so I'd assume it would be with one or two singers...maybe a track with Ozzy thrown in considering Tony appeared on Ozzy's previous album.

As long as it's not Glenn Hughes I'm okay....

I liked him on Seventh Star, but I do think it could have been better with someone else on the mic.

I like Glenn Hughes but it didn't work on Fused as well as it could have. The odd song certainly but I prefer it when he goes for it rather than holds it back.

Almost everything could be! :D

But seriously I know I give Glenn a hard time but his voice just kind of rubs me the wrong way... I can appreciate that his is somewhat talented singer with a lot of range but he just uses it in a way that irks me a bit.

Fused is a great example of that. The songs on it were just too heavy for his voice to carry. I have felt that he has a more of a bluesy type voice than that for heavy metal.

This might be on Tony's upcoming album...or not...

But regardless Tony has teamed up with Lawrence Cottle again for a song to promote his new aftershave(?)...

No huge fan of Robbie Williams, but there could have been many a worse choice. Williams did a Swing album 20 years ago (a la Frank Sinatra) which wasn't bad!
