But aren't covers as bad as these more of a distraction than a good one would ever be?
To me it just seems that they really just don't give a shit...

And sadly though for the most part the music is just barely better than the covers....with the exeption of DM I guess which actually has some really killer tunes.

Marillion - Marbles



It's a bit obvious and boring and a far cry from their early albums.

This guy is something of an electronic music pioneer. Emphasis on the word "something". He's from Sweden, and this is his third long player. I can't understand how a group of adults can sit around, look at the proposed art for the album cover, and agree that it's compelling enough to use. Gah. Of course, it's his own record label and maybe he's the only person involved in the entire process, but after several years, some fame and recognition as well as a couple of records under his belt by the time he foisted Dirty Sally on the world, you'd think there'd be more going on.

I almost didn't post Dirty Sally due to that edict, but upon reflection I determined that the effort he took covering his midriff negates his exposed boobage, and thus the image was posted

Black Label Society has always had pretty simple covers but they've made them work pretty well but this one is rather poor. Old nuns playing pool? Really?

New Model Army - No Rest for the Wicked



I'm not entirely sure what it is about this cover I don't like, maybe it's a little simplistic, basic and unimaginative for my tastes. The next album they did had a cover that made my best 10 list... so they can do it!

I do feel some of my choices are less vomit inducing than others here!

Numero 7:



I hesitated to post this, but decided to run with it anyway. It exemplifies what I see as a sub-genre of Christian-oriented album covers that for unknown reasons always have a person or people on it, always dressed and/or coiffed in some ridiculous manner, and are titled with verbiage that only the most dense would not see the sexual innuendo. Loretta's flute playing no doubt deserves to be enshrined in vinyl, but they couldn't come up with something better than "Fingering and Praying for the Lord?" No shit? And this one is mild in comparison to some others...

Which brings me to posting my number 8, since I seem to be behind still:

Mr. J.J. Worthington's 1969 release makes the cut because it looks like he just popped a Tic-Tac in his mouth but misjudged the length of his fingers and thus found himself inadvertently fingering his mouth. The look on his face indicates he may be praying. Something along the lines of, "Lord, why am I such a moron?"

Perhaps he's related to Ms. Fudge and her prayerful flute? Some questions should probably never find answers...

Now, the words "Heavy Metal" and a lady with a sword on a concrete albatross is gonna get my attention. Black Sabbath, yeah!  Blue Oyster Cult, heavy!  Cheap Trick, um...  Devo... 

Donald Fagen??? 

And then it just goes downhill after that. There are names on the list that are the antithesis of metal. There are bands that are not A-list outfits, including some that have seen much better days (Looking at Grand Funk Railroad, there...) In short, the goods being delivered don't match up to the cool title or the AD&D-influenced artwork. (And it was *A*D&D for all the cool RPGers back in that day, none of that basic stuff, mmmkay?) Truth in packaging this is NOT.

For a movie called Heavy Metal that sure had a lot of non heavy metal music. Haven't seen that movie since the 90s...might have to check it out again...

Mike Howe got so upset with the record label and management for choosing a cover this hideous that he quit music business all together...
And I can understand that...this surely is one HIDEOUS cover!

Omega is one of those bands that existed on the other side of the Iron Curtain, playing heavy rock for the Hungarians along with Skorpio and Lokomotiv GT. They're legends of rock in that part of the world. If this was a cover from the 70's on the label managed by the Hungarian Ministry of Culture, I'd totally understand and forgive all. But this is for a 2021-issued "best of" album! Surely these guys deserved better than a picture that, well, raises more questions than it provides answers...
