Title: Planet Rock's: The Euros of Rock
Post by: KiloDeltaCharlie on June 30, 2021, 08:33:22 AM
Coinciding with Euro 2020, Planet Rock have been doing their own competition based on European rock groups... well there are "some" non-UK groups in the mix but not many! I think they even forgot about The Scorpions and Accept!

It works by putting the competing teams in a Twitter Poll for 1 day and the score is based on the %age points that each band get (1 goal for 10%, 2 for 20% etc). A combined score will therefore add up to 10.

The group stages have finished and the tables are shown below. The results are shown at the end, but I;m not sure how readable it is!

Def Leppard are doing better than I would expect. But that is probably because Joe Elliott is a regular presenter on Planet Rock so sorta has home advantage!!

There are some typos in the table, U2 conceded 23 goals not 13 etc.

There are 4 matches in the round of 16 today, the scores at the moment (but with 18 hours -- as of 14:45 BST --to go) are:

Pink Floyd v Thin Lizzy is currently 5 all but Lizzy are about 0.4 of a % ahead

Motorhead v Def Leppard is currently 6-4 to Motorhead

Whitesnake v Europe is currently 9-1 to Whitesnake!

Iron Maiden v Thunder is currently 7-3 to Iron Maiden

Is that an accurate photo of Black Sabbath? I see Bill Ward in it. :smug:

The first set of last 16 matches ended 9:00 BST this morning. The results didn't change much from the first few hours:

Pink Floyd 49% Thin Lizzy 51%

Motorhead 57% Def Leppard 43%

Whitesnake 85% Europe 15%

Iron Maiden 73% Thunder 27%

Those bold go through to the Quarter Finals

Deep Purple v Rammstein is curently 73% - 27% to Purple

... and then Purple has to face off vs Sabbath... :(

I'll expect Motorhead to beat Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden to beat Whitesnake. Motorhead beats Iron Maiden.

Zeppelin will beat Queen. Whoever wins DP vs BS will then beat Zeppelin.

Predicting Motorhead to make the final vs either DP or BS. And then DP or BS wins overall.

It's more of a mainstream pop-rock radio station so...

Yes, Motorhead will probably beat Thin Lizzy, and Iron Maiden will beat Whitesnake...

But, I think Queen may well beat Zeppelin, and you're correct I don't know which will win between DP and BS.

I think Maiden will beat Motorhead (but I don't think it will be by much), and Queen have already beaten BS in the group stages and I suspect they would beat DP too.

I think it will be a Queen v Iron Maiden final and frankly I couldn't call it, but I would vote for Maiden.

True, I do see that - both Queen and Purple are 3-0 in the group phase, as were Zeppelin and Maiden.

The results are pretty much as shown yesterday give or take a %age point.

It looks like the Quarter Finals start on Monday. The Line Up is:

Motorhead v Thin Lizzy

Whitesnake v Iron Maiden

Deep Purple v Black Sabbath

Queen v Led Zeppelin

That's a very large graphic, indeed.

I'm thinking DP beats Black Sabbath with the way the matches have gone. Led Zeppelin had a weak group, I think they lose to Queen and it may be Queen that beats Deep Purple.

Sabbath vs Purple...yikes. That's like choosing which testicle you want to lose!

If there is any justice in the world. Motörhead and Maiden should have easy wins and Queen should humiliate zeppelin.

Surprisingly they're doing all four Quarter Finals today.

After about half an hour:

Led Zeppelin v Queen, there's a narrow lead for Zeppelin (52:48)

Black Sabbath v Deep Purple, there's a good lead for Sabbath (65:35)

Whitesnake v Iron Maiden, unsurprisingly there's a big lead for Maiden (28:72)

Thin Lizzy v Motorhead, shockingly this is really tight with Lizzy even having a slight lead (51:49)

... but early days, there's still over 22 hours to go (at 10:30 BST)

EDIT: BTW if you want to join in on Twitter you can find the polls at: @PlanetRockRadio

Title: Re: Planet Rock's: The Euros of Rock

After almost 7 hours, things haven't changed hugely except:

Led Zeppelin are now trailing Queen (48.6:51.4)
Title: Re: Planet Rock's: The Euros of Rock
Post by: KiloDeltaCharlie on July 06, 2021, 03:15:57 AM
The Quarter Final Poll has just finished:

Led Zeppelin 47.9%  -  52.1% Queen

Black Sabbath 64.8%  -  35.2% Deep Purple

Whitesnake 29.1%  -  70.9% Iron Maiden

Thin Lizzy 51.7%  -  48.3% Motorhead

So the Semi-Final line-up will be

Queen  v  Black Sabbath

Iron Maiden  v  Thin Lizzy

... and will be played Wednesday

I quite like Thin Lizzy but they're not Motorhead! And I really thought Sabbath / Purple would have been a lot closer!

I think it will be a Queen / Iron Maiden final as Queen have already beaten Sabbath in the group stage.

Not surprised Sabbath spanked em. Shame they have to come up against Queen next.

A Sabbath vs Maiden final would’ve been fitting.

The Semi-Finals are underway @PlanetRockRadio (http://twitter.com/@PlanetRockRadio)

It's only 15 minutes in:

Thin Lizzy v Iron Maiden, currently 37:63 to Maiden

Black Sabbath v Queen, currently 56:44 to Sabbath.

I'm not gettig my hopes up for Sabbath just yet, Queen always start slow, they were 52:48 behind Sabbath in the group game and went on to win 57:43.

^^^
Totally agree, but Planet Rock attracts a more mainstream rock audience. Thin Lizzy make pop/rock which maybe appeals to the audience more. Still, it was dissapointing.

EDIT: Queen are closing the gap 52:48 at the moment. Lizzy / Maiden are 39:61
Title: Re: Planet Rock's: The Euros of Rock

Yeah seems that more mainstream is the thing here.

So yeah I'll agree... Queen are gonna be the champions!

The result of the Semi-Finals...

Lizzy 40% v Maiden 60%

Sabbath 48% v Queen 52%

So the final will be between:

Iron Maiden v Queen

Iron Maiden v Queen

After 20 minures, it's currently 55:45 to Iron Maiden, but I don't think that's enough of a lead with Queen's slow starts and all that.

BTW I've just noticed they've given it a 2 day run rather than the usual 23 hours!
Title: Re: Planet Rock's: The Euros of Rock
Post by: KiloDeltaCharlie on July 09, 2021, 07:40:48 AM
Surprisingly, after 3½ hours Maiden have increased their lead to 62:38.

There's already been over 3000 votes which is more than any previous polls has had!

I'm assuming Iron Maiden fans have taking this to facebook and other social media...they have a pretty strong following there where as Queen crowd might not.

I'm sure you're correct with that thought Charger. Maiden are still a very active group (indeed they've been dropping hints about maybe a new album / tour / or something), while Queen are essentially done and dusted.

The voting goes on until Monday morning. Lunchtime on Saturday it is currently:

Iron Maiden 60.1%

Queen 39.9%

Queen have closed a little bit.

Queen are 43%

There are now 19 hours to go.

Queen 44.4%

6,015 votes were cast. I thought it might be closer.

Planet Rock have been at it again!

During this World Cup they've been having their own World Cup of Rock, pitching various bands from around the world against each other to see who comes out on top.

They are down to the last 8:

Iron Maiden v Led Zeppelin
AC/DC v Queen

Black Sabbath v Motorhead
Metallica v Pink Floyd

It is all done via Twitter polls (@PlanetRockRadio) and yesterday Iron Maiden beat Led Zeppelin 57:43, and AC/DC beat Queen 54:46. The other two matches are taking place today. With 19 hours left Black Sabbath are beating Motorhead 70:30 and Metallica are beating Pink Floyd by a narrower 56:44

Given the result from last years Euros of Rock, Queen going out in the Quarters is a shock. AC/DC might have a shot at beating Maiden for a spot in the finals.

Black Sabbath and Metallica duly won their quarter finals, the scores didn't change much from yesterday

Black Sabbath 69-31 Motorhead
Metallica 56-44 Pink Floyd

Both semi-finals have started and with less than an hour gone it is currently:

Black Sabbath 57-43 Metallica
Iron Maiden 48-52 AC/DC

Title: Re: Planet Rock's: The Euros of Rock

Scores didn't change a huge amount.

Black Sabbath 55.5:44.5 Metallica

AC/DC 51.8:48.2 Iron Maiden

So an AC/DC v Black Sabbath final, I am a little surprised that Iron Maiden lost as they won the Euros last year, and to be honest I'm surprised that AC/DC are still that popular given they haven't done anything worthwhile in over 30 years! ;)

I'm not quite sure when the final starts or if it will be a 2-day ballot as with the previous competition, let's hope that Sabbath can hold firm over the Aussie juggernaut.

Not very surprising....

I'm assuming AC/DC will take the win. Atleast they are still an active band.

That is kinda funky. Whereas AC/DC had a certain amount of variety in their music when Bon Scott was singing for them, and Back in Black is just simply THE definitive "rock out with your cock out" album, AC/DC pretty much wrote one song and successfully parlayed it into 18 full-length albums.

The same can sort of be applied to Iron Maiden after Paul was ejected. Both bands are still running around, but while AC/DC can be played in the background and no one really needs to actually pay attention to it in order for the beat to get through, Maiden requires a person to actually listen to what they're playing to really appreciate it.

That's quite true...same I guess goes for Motörhead...it's pretty much the same thing over and over again but when it works it just works...both bands are true testaments of that.

The final has now started, and as I feared it looks like it will be a win for AC/DC. After and hour or two they lead 59.5 to the Sabs 40.5. Still about 22 hours to go but it rarely deviates much from the first hours voting.
