Motörhead, sweet and wonderful Motörhead. 22 studio releases(23 if you count the unauthorised On Parole) over a 40 year span. Not only one of the great and legendary bands of our time but also one of the hardest working led by one of the most iconic figures in all of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Mr Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister
You’ve been given the hard but pleasant task of squeezing their entire studio catalogue into your top ten order of favourites. You can do it countdown style or just list your top ten in order in one hit.
Born To Lose. Live To Win
Take it away....

Gonna kick off my list with #10
Kiss Of Death(2006)

Released in 2006 Kiss of Death had Lemmy and co getting back to a more blusier approach but still ultra heavy. A very consistent album throughout with great production and a good amount of variation for a later Motörhead album. The albums that followed were good but Kiss of Death is the last great Motörhead album for mine. I could’ve easily had it as high as #6 such is its quality and how little there is between my 10-6
Favourite tracks: Sucker, Devil I Know, Trigger, God Was Never On Your Side, Living In The Past and Sword Of Glory but no weak or mediocre song to be found here.

That's one I don't have, I failed to buy any between March or Die and Aftershock. Something I ought to rectify!

Yes that’s a big chunk of great albums you’ve deprived yourself off there. Maybe this thread will work as a good pointer for you for possible future listens/discoveries.
-
^^^
Yes, it's 10 albums, and at least two I recognise as being fan favourites (some I don't recognise at all). There's a whole bunch of bands I stopped buying in the 90s and only came back to in 2010s... it's probably saved me a fortune! ;)
-
Question?
Studio albums only or live albums too?
Anyways

March Or Die (1992)
Kicks off with the fantastic fast rocker Stand then going into a fabulous cover of Cat Scratch Fever this album really rocks. The Ozzy collaboration Hellraiser is just as good as the one on No More Tears. Other high points are Jack The Ripper, Name In Vain and ofcourse the strangely groovy and super heavy title track.
Even the ballad featuring Ozzy and Slash is pretty good eventhough it is the weakest point of the album.

I hope we can include Live albums otherwise one of my top 3s is out the window!
-
I usually don't like to include live albums on lists like these...I love live albums but they are a different entity from a studio album and lists like these kind of should be about the studio stuff...
-
I’m with Charger. Live albums and compilation albums are a different entity. Besides, Motörhead have such a large studio catalogue anyway there’s no need to include live albums.

My first studio Motorhead album (I had No Remorse, the comp album) and I was seriously impressed with it. Still love to listen to this record.

Sacrifice(1995)

Sacrifice was Motörhead’s 12th studio album as well as the last to feature Würzel and the last album as a four piece and it’s fucking crushing!
Following on from the brilliant and ferocious Bastards Lemmy took the heavy even a step further on this as well as brought a little more of the punk influence. The production is raw with crushing downtuned guitars and killer riffage all over it. Lemmy’s voice is probably the most gravely it’s ever been on this album which matches the heaviness of the recording. The title track is a standout and became a set staple in live shows for many years. Other great tracks are “Sex & Death“, “Over Your Shoulder“, “Dog Face Boy”, “In Another Time”, and the two bluesier rockers “Don’t Waste Your Time“ and “Out of the Sun”. Great album.
-
So no Live albums and no compilations... I think my top 3 has been whittled down to a Top 1! ;)
-
Did you say you have 14 album Kilo? If you take out the live & compilation album(s) does it still leave you with at least 10? If so, you can just rank them in order?
-
^^^
Yeah, just the one live album (the brilliant No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith) and 2 compilations (including the brilliant No Remorse)... not sure where Undercover stands!
That leaves 12 (because I bought Kiss of Death yesterday), but I need to listen to them all so I can rank them. I may just list my top 10 once you guys have finished yours.
-
^^^Sounds like a good plan ;)
Very interested to see your take on some of the albums you’ve missed along the way.

BASTARDS
The follow-up to March Or Die revealed one of Motorhead's best ever tracks in the shape of Born To Raise Hell, the drum intro and the groovy melody with the catchy chorus...that song is one hell of a Motorhead rock anthem! It became a live staple as well and usually always featured some special guest...Ice-T, Whitfield Crane and Michael Monroe all preformed on the album version too.
Death Or Glory is another absolutely stellar track. And it was kind of fashionable to make a child molestation song in the mid 90s and Motorhead did one too in the form of Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me which is different enough. This is also one of the few Motorhead albums to feature two slower numbers...Lost In The Ozone isn't among their finest but it's luckily a rather short one. The album closer Devils is another killer track.
This was also the first album where long time drummer Mikkey Dee was an official member of the band.

My second Motorhead studio album and one of the Lemmy's least favorite of their discography
I personally love it though

I consider No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith to be an adjunct of the power trio of albums Overkill, Bomber, and Ace of Spades. If you have those three, you get that album to provide a power boost or something like that.

Overnight Sensation(1996)
1996’s Overnight Sensation marked the return of the power trio after the departure of Würzel in 1995. In contrast to heavy hitters Bastards and Sacrifice Motörhead dial it back a tad and stretch the boundaries somewhat incorporating some melodic and diverse song writing with a slicker more polished production while still managing to keep their trademark sound. The result is another brilliant release capping a trio of albums in the 90’s that comes close to rivalling the classic trio of Overkill, Bomber and Ace of Spades.
Favourite tracks are thunderous opener “Civil War“ the catchy rockin “Crazy Like A Fox”, haunting semi ballad “Don’t Believe A Word” with its doomy bass intro, the heavy groovin “Broken” and the out and out thrasher “Them Not Me”. The melodic soulful album closer “Listen to your Heart” is another great track and highlights just how versatile Motörhead could be.

I'm gonna copy Jack on this one just one step higher on my list.
SACRIFICE
Jack pretty much said everything there is to say about this one...
The title track is among Motörhead's best ones...there is certainly a bit of a punk edge to the album but I don't hold it against it though as it is still very Motörhead.
One thing though...this has to be THE WORST cover art in the band's whole discography...absolutely horrible. How could Lemmy allow this I'll never know...Snaggletooth with a penis tongue...what the actual fuck??
I won't even post the cover art...can't.

OK, I'm going to give Overnight Sensation a go. I don't have post-1988 Motorhead, so I figure now's a good time to give 'em a go. I wasn't happy with Rock 'n' Roll or No Sleep at All, so I didn't drop cash on 1916. I was also pretty darn poor at the time, just out of college with a new baby and not really able to buy much of anything that wasn't a used record.
-
Just finished OS... my first impression is that the second half is much stronger than the first. Definitely a +1 on the closing track for being a fun tune.

1916(1991)

Released 4 years after the somewhat lacklustre Rock ‘n’ Roll 1916 was a comeback album of sorts for Motörhead and earned them more success and recognition in America. It was also their most advanced and experimental album to that point mixing a variety of different styles & sounds even adding instruments like keyboard, saxophone and Cello.
I have very fond memories of this album when it came out which is probably why I rate it so high. Loved it and played the hell out of it for months culminating in seeing them live for the first time on the 1916 tour in 91 which is still one of the big highlights of my concert going life. You never forget the first time you see Motörhead live. Very impactful and stays with you forever.
My favourites from 1916 are “I’m So Bad(Baby I don’t Care)”, “No Voices in the Sky”, the creepy “Nightmare/The Dreamtime” the haunting balled “Love Me Forever“ and totally rockin pair of “Angel City“ & “Make My Day”. It would also be remiss not to mention Lemmy’s tribute to the Ramones and his ode the the fallen British soldiers of WW1 inspired by the Battle of the Somme in 1916 which concludes the album.
-
^^^
That will almost certainly be in my top 10. It has one of my all time favourite Motorhead songs and it's the best on this album The One To Sing The Blues.

IRON FIST
The last of the "classic" line-up. Lemmy didn't like the production of the album nor the fact that they made it bit too fast after the live album but it still has some absolutely crushing songs on it like the title track, Go To Hell, ironically entitled Loser, Speedfreak and the absolute masterpiece that is (Don't Need) Religion.
Sure the production on this isn't perfect and some of the songs lack that Motörhead drive that was on the previous two albums but for the title track alone this deserves to be on the list. The other killer ones are the reason it rises up to number 7.
-
Iron Fist, this one I know. I'll need to spin 1916 (thank you YouTube for having almost every song ever made on it), but Iron Fist is definitely a cut below the other "classic" output.
-
^^Iron Fist is an interesting one for me, was tough leaving it out but at the end of the day I rarely revisit it these days saved for 3 of the first 4 tracks and Bang To Rights. I find the rawness and spirit is there but it does lack the quality of the three albums that preceded it. Plus, I really felt I needed to give a fair amount of love to some of the 17 albums outside of the classic lineup.
I did rank Iron Fist 11th for what it’s worth ;)
-
I was thinking long and hard about the rankings from 6-10...I pretty much new the top 5 out from the gate but these were bit trickier...and honestly the order of them might be very different on another day...
-
I'm pretty sure I'll see Overkill, Bomber, and Ace of Spades in some order in the top three on any list. EVERYBODY's heard them and loved them, usually.

Bastards(1993)

A year after the misguided and watered down March or Die in 92 Motörhead returned with a different direction and a renewed energy in 93 producing one of the heaviest and most aggressive albums under the Motörhead banner. Much of the newfound energy and aggression can be put down to the recruitment of drummer Mikkey Dee who is an absolute beast on this album which is matched by the rest of the band. The songwriting and musicianship is top notch, the music heavy and relentless(only really lightening off for the ballad “Don’t Let Daddy Kiss Me”)and the production is polished and powerful which all combined makes Bastards one of the best albums in the Motörhead catalogue.
Highlights are the first four ball-tearers “On Your Feet Or On Your Knees”, “Burner” “Death Or Glory” and “I Am The Sword” along with the fun fan live favourite “Born To Raise Hell”. “We Bring The Shake” and “Devils”are both great also but I honestly think every song on this album is great.

MOTÖRIZER
This album features several of my favourite Motörhead tunes inlcuding the fantastic punchy opener Runaround Man, the heavy Teach You How To Sing The Blues, the short but rocky Rock Out, one of the band's best album closers The Thousand Names Of God and one of my all time favourites When The Eagle Screams. But it does also have some weak points like the lackluster English Rose and the forgettable Heroes and Time Is Right. But overall this album does hold it's own and is one of the bands most METAL albums.
Sadly not all the best ones were ever preformed live, but giving Lemmy's vocal delivery on Runaround Man I can easily imagine that being rather hard to reproduce live night after night. But Rock Out and The Thousand Names Of God became live staples for tours to come and both making it to the brilliant double live release The Wörld Is Ours.
Also the understated album cover is somewhat SUBERB:

Another Perfect Day(1983)

After the acrimonious split with Fast Eddie Lemmy recruited former Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian “Robbo” Robertson for 83’s “Another Perfect Day” which on the surface seemed like an extremely odd fit but turned out to be a brilliant blend of musical styles. Robbo’s more technically advanced, very melodic and bluesy style of playing mixed with Lemmy’s rough and raw vocal delivery, rumbling distorted bass and all-round bad ass rock ‘n’ roll attitude along with Philthy’s hard hitting drummimg style make this the most uniquely brilliant album in the Motörhead catalogue. Much maligned and even dismissed at the time it’s thankfully gone on to be much loved and respected by Motörhead fans new & old. The many highlights include opener “Back at the Funny Farm”, “Shine”, “Dancing on your Grave”, “One Track Mind”, “Marching Off To War”, I Got Mine”, and “Tales of Glory”
P.S. I could’ve had this album as high as 3 or 4 and maybe would’ve on another week or year but I’ll leave it at #5 today.
-
^^^
Bit surprised about that making your list...It's not that widely liked album I think. I personally found it bit lacking...Robbo's guitarplaying doesn't fit Motörhead's style at all..The thunder and drive is missing.
That being said, I just ordered the Deluxe Edition of it yesterday though!! :D

AFTERSHOCK
The comeback album after Lemmy's health troubles started and oh boy what an album it is. Lemmy surely found some new drive and fury from his health issues after the somewhat lackluster The World Is Yours album.
The furious opener Heartbreaker immediately sets the tone for what you know is going to be an awesome album. Even the slower track Lost Woman Blues works brilliantly. But it is tracks like Death Machine, Do You Believe, End Of Time, Silence When You Speak To Me and especially the incredible Queen Of The Damned that put this album firmly into the top 5!
Also this has one of the bands best ever cover arts!

I like it so much because of its point of difference to everything else yet it still has that Motörhead grunt to it. Have always loved Robbo’s playing especially on this album. It has a lot of guitar solos, in particular quite a few extended solos.
-
Another Perfect Day has some great, great songs on it, "I Got Mine" and "Dancing on Your Grave" are very close to my heart. The sharp difference in guitar style leads to discussions on the level of Bolin vs Blackmore in DP circles. It's basically a one-off lineup that had some incredible creativity, but wasn't meant to last more than one album.
Looks like I'll need to spin Aftershock after I finish 1916.
-
Yeah...it without a doubt the most melodic album in the bands history. I do enjoy some of the extended solos...but what I don't like is the guitar tone. It's just not gritty enough.
Back At The Funny Farm, I Got Mine, Marching Off To War and Dancing On Your Grave are the good tracks and the ones I really enjoy.
The comparison to Bolin led Purple is a valid one. Neither album is horrible just very very different.
-
With that, I rank Come Taste the Band as one of my top 10 Motorhead albums!
Just kidding, of course...
-
OK, Aftershock is a most awesome album. Thank you to Charger for touting it!
Bastards and Motorizer should come next for my excursion into post-1988 Motorhead. :) Thank you to Jack for starting this off and getting me to catch up on that info!

An obvious classic! Not quite as strong as the two classics it’s sandwiched between but still one of their best albums. By all reports Lemmy and co weren’t all that happy with the final release though. Most of the songs were written on the road while touring the Overkill album and they were given little time to rehearse and fine tune them before heading straight into the studio to record the album at tours end. Also, producer Jimmy Miller was apparently strung out on heroin for most of the sessions which wouldn’t have helped matters.
The title track is an obvious standout and one of Motörhead’s greatest songs as is “Stone Dead Forever” Other favourites include “Dead Men Tell No Tales”, “Poison”, “All The Aces” and the heavy blues driven “Step Down” with Eddie Clarke on lead vocals. “Over The Top” the b-side to the Bomber single is a great track also and should’ve been included on the original release.
-
Bomber will probably be nearer the bottom of my 10 but it will be there.
-
I'm glad I turned you on Aftershock ZZ! Great stuff indeed...
#4
ORGASMATRON
The first album to feature the immense talent of Phil Campbell on guitar who became the longest serving member of the band besides Lemmy and also the first to feature Michael "Würzel" Burston on lead guitar.
The dual guitar onslaught brought a whole new depth and drive to the band and made the songs heavier than ever before. It also gave Lemmy some more room to add bass parts that weren't possible before.
Orgasmatron was the heaviest Motörhead album to that point and it started something of a second coming for the band.
There really aren't any weak tracks on the album but the absolute highlights are the crushing opener Deaf Forever, Ain't My Crime, the gritty and brilliantly named Claw, the fast rocker Mean Machine, the live favourite Doctor Rock and ofcourse the bonecrushingly heavy title track which is without a doubt the second best Motörhead title track ever.
-
^^^No Remorse was actually the first album to feature Phil Campbell and Würzel.
Orgasmatron was the hardest one for me to leave out. It’s probably the closest in sound to the classic lineup. I thought long and hard about it and really wanted to squeeze it in but just couldn’t choose one to leave out.. The muddy production hurts it a little.
-
No Remorse was not an album...it was a compilation with a couple new tracks! ;)
I felt the same way about leaving Bomber out, but it just doesn't have enough good tracks compared to March Or Die or Bastards.
The muddy production is a bit much but they did manage to fix some of it on the remaster.
-
No Remorse was not an album...it was a compilation with a couple new tracks! ;)
They actually recorded 6 new songs for it in which 4 were on the album and the other 2 were different songs both called “Under the Knife” that ended up on the b-side of “Killed By Death” No Remorse was still the first album they played on though ;)
-
Don't think I've heard Under The Knife...name doesn't sound fimilar...not sure.
Gotta check it out on youtube I think.

You can hear them on the deluxe version of No Remorse. I like the faster Under the Knife best.

Take all the best things about “Bastards” and “Sacrifice” combine them together and you pretty much get “Inferno”. For me, the greatest Motörhead album post Ace of Spades, headlined by Phil Campbell’s scorching guitar work, Mikkey Dee’s powerful drumming and Lemmy Kilmister at his dirty & mean best. Fast, aggressive, heavy, catchy and just killer from start to finish with stellar production.
Favourite tracks “Terminal Show”, “Killer”, All in the Name of Tragedy”, “Down On Me” “In The Black” “Smiling Like A Killer” and the fun acoustic blues ditty “Whorehouse Blues” which features some cool Harmonica playing from Lemmy.
Everything you love about Motörhead is embedded in this album...

ACE OF SPADES
One of those classics that you just find yourself enjoying again and again. With tracks like the title track, Shoot You In The Back, Fast And Loose, We Are The Road Crew and The Chase Is Better Than The Catch are all among the bands finest. But it's not completely without weak numbers either, ones like Dance, Fire Fire and Jailbait are ones that I tend to skip. But even with those this album has deserved it's place among some of metal's biggest classics and I can fully appreciate why the title track became their greatest hit and why it influenced the thrash metal genre so.
The iconic cover art is an odd one among the bands catalogue for not featuring the mascot Snaggletooth at all...instead the band dressed up like desperados...which also has very little to do with the title or the title track. And odd choice for a cover but it works...really really well in fact.

I've got through several of the albums I bought and played a few that I haven't listened to recently. I don't think I've listened to March or Die in a long, long time (20+ years!!), but it's so much better than I remember. Of the new ones (to me anyway) I think Kiss of Death is the most enjoyable. My top 10 is shaping up nicely but I still have a few albums to get through, either for the first time or to confirm where they should appear on the list.

I’m not even gonna add my little take on my last 2 picks. The covers speak for themselves.
They’re both stone cold classics and iconic albums which everyone knows...
I will just add though...There is absolutely nothing between them. They’re practically the same albums musically and equally brilliant, only separated by a track or a personal attachment to a certain time in one’s life that elevates one slightly above the other...And in my case, Overkill the album was my introduction to Motörhead, that along with the greatness of it's title track puts it just at the very top of my list.

2 - Overkill
#1 - Ace of Spades
Jack is on the money; it's a toss up for me. And not just for those two releases. In a broader sense, there are albums I enjoy more than others, or that I feel are "better" than others (production, gusto, etc.), but they're all good - some are greatness.

This will always be a favorite Motorhead album. One amazing song after the other.
I have the Sanctuary Records 2005 2CD deluxe edition and even the bonus tracks are great.

Even though this is the Motorhead album that I have listened to the least in the past five years it is is still a firm favorite of mine, so much so that it is number 2. It was the only Motorhead album my dad liked for some reason so that has a lot to do with it being held so high.

Was there any doubt that this absolute classic of Hard Rock/Metal would be my number 1!!!
One of my fav albums period, this is Motorhead at their best.

I guess my Number 2 wasn't such a big surprise after all as Jack picked it as number 3 to my big surprise and admiration! Awesome point goes your way for that!

INFERNO
This album is probably the heaviest, fastest, hardest, most metal album in Motörhead's vast discography and for all those reasons it's a firm favourite of mine. I think this is the album that I have listened to the most!
The album contains my absolute favourite Motörhead tune of all time, the hard hitting KILLERS! The drive of that song is something special...and the lyrics...the line "We kill you till you die!" is the kind of perfection only Lemmy could come up with!
But the rest of the album is no slouch either! The fast and furious opener Terminal Show sets the pace to an album you know is gonna rock hard. The brilliant In The Name Of Tragedy completes the best opening trio in the bands career. Suicide slows things down a bit, but only a bit still maintaining the ultra heaviness. Fight and Smiling Like A Killer are another absolute stars, the only real weak moment on the album is the dragging Keys To The Kingdom. The album closer is one of Motörhead's oddest (and best) songs of all time, the brilliant acoustic number Whorehouse Blues, which also features the only thing that's missing...a little mouth harp blues...but you know they can do that too!
An absolutely brilliant album and this also features their GREATEST art work as well!

Well that would mean I'd remember stuff...I really don't... :D

My top 3:
3. Ace of Spades
2. Bomber
1. Overkill
That's how I play 'em, too.
-
Once everyone’s done I might attempt to rank the remaining albums from #11 to #22. I have them all and know them all pretty well.
Then if anyone is interested I’ll post my entire Motörhead vinyl collection in the vinyl thread.
-
^^^
It will probably be another couple of days before I post mine, I still have some albums ro get through, but I don't have as much spare time as I'd like at the moment!
-
Take your time Kilo. Some albums can take time to grow on you. Sometimes forcing yourself to listen to something when not in the mood can have a negative impact on how you hear an album too. Or you can get a bit fatigued with all the listening and that can have a negative impact also.
-
And it's time for the Number One!
OVERKILL
This is one of those few albums out there that has absolutely no weak songs. Goes into the company with Sabbath's Mob Rules or Purple's Machine Head or Priest's Painkiller. After few albums the band finally found their drive and power in a way that only few bands are able to.
The title track is hands down their best opening track and one of their best tracks ever. The fierce drum intro sets the tone for the whole album. Stay Clean, I Won't Pay Your Price, No Class, Damage Case, Metropolis, Limb From Limb...all timeless classics. This was this line up at their very finest and it also solidified Motörhead as one of the originators of the new wave of British Heavy Metal...eventhough Lemmy always insisted that they were rock 'n roll...but what is metal if not Rock 'n Roll played fast and loud...and what is a better way to describe Overkill? Or Motörhead for that matter?

Very true. You don't want to give an album a ranking just to be done with it. Keeping it fresh means both keeping it honest and keeping it fun.

Does anyone know if On Parole is in anyway compareable with their debut. They have a similar track listing but I think they've been re-recorded. I only have the debut on cassette and I no longer have a player!

My copy of On Parole credited Larry Wallis for guitar on a number of tracks, and he def. has a different sound from Fast Eddie.
-
The original On Parole was recorded in 75 before the official debut with Larry Wallis on guitar. Sounds proto Motörhead or like demos versions of the early songs. It ended up getting shelved by UA and was re-recorded with the classic lineup and released as Motörhead in 77. The original then got an unauthorised release later in 79 after Motörhead had established themselves.
-
Ok, I've now listened to everything, it's now a case of thinking what order I need to put them in. I need to check out the track listings, perhaps relisten to some songs to confirm final positions. The five new albums were all pretty good, 2 of them particularly so!
I'll post my 10 tomorrow.
-
Looking forward to your list.
-
Yes bring it on. Particularly interested where you rank the ones you hadn’t previously previously indulged.
-
Ok, here's my list:
10. Bastards
No. 10 could have been the self titled debut, but Bastards gets it as being a little more consistent. This is a new album to me and I can see it rising higher up the 10 once I've listened to it more.
9. Iron Fist
A good solid album, no real standout tracks but no filler either.
8. 1916
I thought this would be higher. But it only has two great tracks and some okay ones, too much filler I'm afraid.
7. Bomber
Some really good early tracks here, just not as many as some of their other early albums.
6. Kiss of Death
Another new one to me, this could be challenging the top three once I'm into it more.
5. March or Die
I had dismissed this as mainly filler and hadn't played it since the 90s. But when I played it last week I was so shocked at how good it was. Maybe my taste has changed in 20+ years. I think I'll play this more often from now on!
4. Another Perfect Day
I always liked this one, it has some of my favourite songs on it including Dancing on Your Grave!
3. Ace of Spades
A bonafide classic, choc full of fan favourites (and mine!). A couple of weak tracks drags this one down to 3rd though.
2. Inferno
I heard this for the first time on Tuesday... I've played it a couple of time since and I absolutely love it, in a few more listens it might be vying for the top spot!
1. Overkill
I know it's an obvious choice... but it is the obvious choice, every track is pretty great and there are 5 of my all time favourite Motorhead songs on it.
-
Very solid list Kilo. Great to see you’re digging Inferno and Kiss Of Death, amazing albums for sure. And of corse you’ve earned yourself an awesome point as well for including Bastards in your 10
-
Your top 3 is the same as mine!
Awesome!
The love for Inferno is just....
-
Thanks guys it's appreciated.
All 5 of the new albums (for me) are good, and Sacrifice and Overnight Sensation might be pushing for the 10 if I was only more familiar with them. They are all from the period when I wasn't buying Motorhead albums (for which I blame March or Die!). There's 5 more from that period I still don't have, I'll get them for sure, but there's no real hurry.
So thanks guys for getting me into those lost gems.
-
:)
Also I have to say I am happy to see how you then changed your mind about March Or Die...it's a cracking album!
-
Back when March or Die came out I thought it was ok but kind of a disappointing follow up to 1916. I think the songwriting is good on in its own but it’s Motörhead “lite” and overly commercial for a Motörhead album. It was Lemmy‘s attempt to have a crack at the big commercial success that a lot of other metal bands were enjoying at the time and probably also a product of him working with Ozzy during this period
Personally I don’t think there’s a bad Motörhead album in the catalogue, some are just less memorable than others. In March or Die’s case it’s more watered down than anything else they did.
-
That's kind of an interesting take on it...cause I think it's pretty damn heavy in fact....in places heavier than Bastards...or 1916 for that matter.
Never really thought of it overly commercial...BUT I Ain't No Nice Guy does fit that mark...and it is the worst song on the album for sure.
-
The production isn’t heavy at all. The guitar tones aren’t your typical raw, mean and dirty Motörhead sound. The album has a bit of a feel of what was going on in the LA metal scene at the time. Lemmy had moved there permanently by then so that probably rubbed off on him as well. Also bringing in Ozzy and Slash for the big power ballad is another pointer that Lemmy was angling for some mainstream commercial success as well as covering Cat Scratch Fever and having it at track #2 on the album.
-
Well...yeah...I guess the guitar tone is bit cleaner than on the other two.
The Cat Scratch Fever cover is brilliant though. One of their best covers I think.
-
So as I've been going through my Motörhead cds (still missing quite a few though but just ordered couple more) been thinking we probably should rate the rest too at some point...
The best of the rest?
-

It is a great cover. I’ve always loved “You Better Run” which also has Slash on it. That duelling guitar and bass solo is brilliant!
-

The best of the rest?
Yes we should.
-
Ok I think I’ve got a good enough of a handle on Motörhead’s entire catalogue to judge them all. I own every one of their albums on vinyl or cd or both in a lot of cases and have given them enough listens over the years to rate them in some semblance of order as hard as that is because there is very little between a lot of them.
#11. Iron Fist(1982) - The final album from the classic lineup. Very solid album but just lacks the quality and highlights of the previous albums. Played it a lot back in the day but need to be in a certain mood to give it a spin these days. Side one is the stronger side and last track “Bang To Rights” is the best from Side 2.
#12. Orgasmatron(1986) - Good album, probably closest in sound & style to the classic era delivered from this and subsequent lineups. Production is muddy which hurts it a bit but it still really captures the Motörhead spirit with the mean and dirty riffage of earlier releases. Deaf Forever, Mean Machine, Built for Speed, Doctor Rock and title track are my favourites off this.
#13. Motörhead(1977) - Hard to know where to rank the s/t debut as Overkill was such a big step up from this in every way. This also has more of a punkier edge to it as well and a rawer production. Their sound and style is very much in the development stage on this and some of the songs were written by Lemmy in his former band Hawkwind and others were written before “Fast” Eddie Clarke joined. I do dig the album a lot though and appreciate it for its time but for some reason I don’t revisit it much these days. Vibrator is the only song that never did anything for me.
#14. Hammered(2000) - A really great album. Just a little bit off the consistent quality of the other non classic lineup albums I have in my top 10. Walk a Crooked Mile, Down the Line, Voices From the War, Kill the World and Red Raw are all brilliant songs. The Triple H theme song “The Game” is pretty cool as well. Recommend this one if you’re a fan of Bastards, Sacrifice and Overnight Sensation. Probably should have it higher actually but tough trying to demote any of the three ahead of it.
#15. We Are Motörhead(2000) - Another really good solid release from the Lemmy, Phil, Mikkey lineup and a definite improvement on the previous release to this but again just a bit off the consistent quality of other albums from this lineup. See Me Burning, Stay Out of Jail, One More Fucking Time, Stagefreight/Crash & Burn and the title track are up there with the best of anything this lineup ever did though. Another one that could be higher on the list.
#16. Motorizer(2008) - Inferno and then Kiss of Death were always gonna be tough albums to follow but they did a more than admirable job with Motorizer. Still very much in the same vein as those albums only Kiss of Death is more varied and it’s best songs are just better than the best of Motorizer. Favourite tracks Runaround Man, Teach You How To Sing The Blues, Rock Out, Buried Alive and “The Thousand Names of God“.
#17. Bad Magic(2015) - Probably my favourite of their last 3 studio releases. Lemmy was ill during the recording and his voice is decidedly weaker. It seems they all lifted their game knowing it was more than likely gonna be the final studio album from Motörhead. Some really strong and memorable riffs from Phil on this one. Highlights include: Victory or Die, Thunder & Lightning, Shoot Out All of Your Love, Till the End, & Choking On Your Screams. “Electricity” is good also but the riff is a carbon copy of “Smiling Like A Killer” from Inferno. Production sounds strangely a bit murky too but I dig this album quite a lot and can see it creeping up the list in years to come.
#18. March Or Die(1992) - I do like this album overall even though It’s quite watered down and commercial sounding for a Motörhead album. The songwriting is still good though and I appreciate the point of difference to other albums and another side to Lemmy. He and the band proved they could write a popier more commercial sounding rock album with the best of them. Favourite tracks: Stand, Bad Religion, I Ain’t No Nice Guy, Asylum Choir and You Better Run. No real bad or mediocre tracks on this one though.
#19. Aftershock(2013) - A good solid release and improvement over “The World Is Yours” but just suffers from being a little samey with tempos and lacking variety which was a bit of a constant in their later years. I do think this one will improve a bit more over time as I possibly get burnt out on others. Lost Women Blues, End of Time, Dust and Glass, Queen of the Damned and Knife are my standouts from this album.
#20. Rock ‘n’ Roll(1987) - A tough one to rate. I honestly don’t think it’s bad or any worse than some other albums I rank just ahead of it, it’s probably just less memorable. The production sounds lifeless as hell and lacks punch which doesn’t help. If it was a little more in your face I’d rate it higher. Best tracks are the self titled track , Eat The Rich, Stone Deaf in the USA, “The Wolf“ and “Boogeyman”. The b-side to Eat The Rich “Just Cos You Got The Power” really should’ve been included on the album proper.
#21. The World Is Yours(2010) - A little uninspired and a by the numbers release is probably the best way to describe this album which is a rare thing in their discography. Still a decent listen but just lacks consistent good memorable songs and the variation of previous releases from this great lineup. Best songs for me are the two bookends along with I Know How To Die, Brotherhood of Man and Outlaw.
#22. Snake Bite Love(1998) - Another one that suffers from just not being memorable enough and is a little uninspired and misguided in what it’s trying to achieve. Doesn’t seem like they really put a lot of thought and effort into this album. Phil’s riffs are ok but nothing really stands out. Still not a bad album by any stretch but just not enough highlights to rank it above anything else. Quite like “Dead and Gone” for a different vibe and Dogs of War and Better Off Dead are solid Motörhead songs also, while Assassin would be quite likeable if not for the repetitive chorus.
Overall, Snake Bite Love is quite an oddball release sandwiched among some very strong albums.
Phew! That was even tougher than I thought...Subject to change of course.
Good luck to the rest of you’s.
-
Hmmm...My list would look quite a bit different I think.
But the truth is I am still missing few albums...Snake Bite Love is on it's way, Hammered I don't have, Overnight Sensation neither, nor the debut...So I am going to have to listen to them on youtube to find a placing for them.
I think We Are Motörhead and Bad Magic might rank around the same place where you did...The Wörld Is Yours Might get bit higher but that depends a lot on the one's I haven't listened to actively yet.
-
I don't have the debut on CD
I also don't have from the earlier releases Orgasmatron and Rock n Roll.
From the period I wasn't buying their albums I don't have Snake Bite Love, We Are Motorhead, Hammered, Motorizer and The World is Yours....
Therefore I only really have 4 more albums that I could include as I'm presuming On Parole doesn't really count.
-
Today I've been listening to We Are Motörhead again after some while and I have to say the album's better than I remembered... I was thinking about putting it on the middle the list but now I think it might actually go to the top side.
-

Yep it’s a really good album and definitely in the top 5 of the Lemmy, Phil, Mikkey era along with Hammered.
-
So I’ve been re-listening to my 11-15 selections the last few days just to make sure I’ve got them down correctly which I probably should’ve done before I did the list and I’ve decided to make a couple of amendments. The first one is Orgasmatron. As it stands now is a better more consistent album than Iron Fist so moving that to #11.
The other amendment is “We Are Motörhead” Giving it a Refresh today it’s better songs are better than the best songs on Hammered and its weaker songs which there aren’t many are better than the the weaker songs on Hammered. It must be said though, Phil’s solos are much better on Hammered. Also I’ll just add, the production on “We Are Motörhead“ is absolutely stellar and I should’ve included “Wake The Dead” in with the great tracks from that album and tbh I can actually see myself revisiting that album more than Iron Fist and S/T for the rest of my days so I’m even bumping it ahead of those two as well.
-

I've boungth a couple more: Ogasmatron and We Are Motorhead.
Only just delivered so I haven't listened to them yet. I might get Hammered but that'll probably be it for now.

Thanks for the run-down Jack. It is tough to put them in some kind of order. On a side note, I bought Rock 'n' Roll when it came out. Got home, opened it up, and damned if the disk itself wasn't Battlezone's Children of Madness .
I was mad, alright lol. I should have kept it, but was so pissed off I took it outside and threw it down the street like a frisbee, bouncing of the asphalt. Fucking shit. I may have been chemically enhanced at the time.

That poor album. Could’ve at least been stuck on a wall as cool Motörhead art.
As for Children of Madness, lmao I remember it well. I let a mate be the sacrificial lamb and buy it when we visited a record store one day soon after it came out. You could just tell from the cover that something was rotten in China. I remember we got back to the mates place and he threw it on and I instantly started pissing myself laughing while the mate was looking rather sheepish and slightly horrified. Didn't stop him desperately trying to convince himself for the rest of side 1 that it wasn’t all that bad and that this and that riff sounded pretty good though lol.
I think everyone would have one of those type albums in their collection :-X

I've been listening to some of the albums missing from my collection now...
I think I'm going to do a partial list soon and then fill in the missing ones as I get them...

Well just got Snake Bite Love today and I have to say I wasn't expecting to like it very much based on Jack's list BUT I actually do find it enjoyable.
It is little different sounding, and not quite so fast and crushing as some and the songs are bit longer without a single real fast short rocker the band is known for but I have to say I'm still digging it so it won't be on the bottom of my list...
I pretty much have locked down the bottom of the list already I think but the ranks from 15 to 11 are tougher....much tougher.

My review wasn’t too bad. It’s not a terrible album or anything but when you put it up against anything else 6 years either side of it it’s just a lot less memorable with not much that stands out.
Anyhow, something has to be on the bottom ;)

So the Contrarians uploaded/posted this today. Quite topical and rather on cue I must say to what we’ve been doing on here the last month.
Interesting but I’m not at all surprised. Quite similar to my thoughts but they’re a little harsher.

Ugh...could not disagree more on that one..

I was surprised 1916 was even mentioned in the conversation. These things are all subjective of coarse but March or Die does tend to be a bit of a whipping boy amongst Motörhead fans.

^^^
Now when I started with my Motörhead journey only few years ago I did not know that and March Or Die was among the first ones I got...4th or 5th album I think...so I got to listen to it fresh without any baggage and it hit the spot thus it has stayed on my top 10.
