Title: The Community's top 20 albums of the 2000's so far voted by members!
Post by: Zzzptm on February 26, 2020, 09:48:10 PM
Starting this thread because FINLAND HAS LOST ITS MIND.  :wall:

Let's look at albums released from 1 Jan 2000 to 31 Dec 2019.

For our consideration, at least for starters:

Deep Purple: Rapture of the Deep, Now What?!, and Infinite
Black Sabbath: 13
Ozzy: Down to Earth, Under Cover, Black Rain, Scream
Metallica: St. Anger, Death Magnetic, Hardwired
Iron Maiden: Brave New World, Dance of Death, A Matter of Life and Death, The Final Frontier, The Book of Souls
Megadeth: The World Needs a Hero, The System Has Failed, United Abominations, Endgame, Thirteen, Super Collider, Dystopia
Judas Priest: Demolition, Angel of Retribution, Nostradamus, Redeemer of Souls, Firepower
Motorhead: We Are Motorhead, Hammered, Inferno, Kiss of Death, Motorizer, The World Is Yours, Aftershock, Bad Magic
Dio: Magica, Killing the Dragon, Master of the Moon
Heaven and Hell: The Devil You Know, Live from Radio City Music Hall
Glenn Hughes: Return of Crystal Karma, Building the Machine, Songs in the Key of Rock, Soul Mover, Music for the Divine, First Underground Nuclear Kitchen, Resonate
BCC: Black Country, 2, Afterglow, BCCIV

^ Bands we've collectively mentioned as ones we favour, all their releases in the last 20 years. Not all of them are winners, but should get us thinking. Feel free to add more and to explore ones you haven't heard that others put forward as greats.

I'd add in there stuff by... (my nominations for "top albums" in bold)
Mos Generator: Songs for Future Gods, The Late Great Planet Earth, Nomads, Electric Mountain Majesty, Abyssinia, The Firmament, Shadowlands
Wo Fat: The Gathering Dark, Psychedelonaut, Noche del Chupacabra, The Conjuring, The Black Code, Midnight Cometh
Honeymoon Disease: The Transcendence, Part Human Mostly Beast
1000mods: Super Van Vacation, Vultures, Repeated Exposure To...
Vuelveteloca: Jinete Galactico, Dias de Calor, Vuelveteloca, Pantera, Sonora
Drive By Wire: Drive by Wire, Between Oceans, The Whole Shebang, Spellbound
Fu Manchu: King of the Road, California Crossing, Start the Machine, We Must Obey, Gigantoid, Signs of Infinite Power, Clone of the Universe
Ozone Mama: Cosmos Caling, Freedom, Sonic Glory, The Starship Has Landed
Sasquatch: Sasquatch, II, III, IV, Maneuvers
Spacegoat: Superstition
Truckfighters: Gravity X, Mania, Phi, Universe, V

Of the list of the more mainstream metal albums, I would tout Now What?!, Dystopia, Live at Radio City Music Hall, and BCCIV. But if I'm missing on something else, I'll be happy to try a first (or second) listen to anything suggested by other members.

Except black/death metal. I'm gonna have to have a hard pass on that stuff.

So what do you put forward as suggestions for the best of 2000-2019?

This is no easy task. I reckon my top 20 would be made up of only 6-8 bands. Not even sure what my #1 would be. Will have to give this some thought.

I'm upto 19 at the moment but I have no idea what the final order will be, as JtS says it will take some thought!

I was dreading about this!

I put the best albums of 2010-2019 down earlier but didn't want to publish it knowing how people here feel about my lists...

I am going to think about this for a good long while now.

We just pour them all in a big list and start rummaging through them all. No idea on what the order would be, since I'm not in any of your heads. :) I count my picks and I'm at 18, in no order at all.

Huge memory work here.

I would first quote what I think I can add to the first list of essentials these gems :
- Halford - Resurrection - Live Insurrection - Crucible
- Bruce Dickinson : Tyranny of Souls

Followed by my  favourites of this last two decades . By checking the lists year by year on wikipedia, I sadly understand that the closer you get to today, the less I can find to fill the list. Advancing in age no doubt.Sometimes even often, I was shaken and touched by a single album from a little-known band. By seeking to discover it further upstream, the spark is no longer there. Despite this , I want to list them as well.
No particular order :

Evergrey : In Search of Truth - Hymns for the Broken .
Katatonia : The Great Cold Distance - Night is the New Day - The Fall of Hearts
Anathema : Weather Sytems - Distant Satellites
Alcest : Les Voyages de l' âme - Kodama
Warrel Dane : Praises to the War Machine
Type O Negative : Life is Killing Me - Dead Again
Ghost : Opus Eponymous - Meliora
Kamelot : The 4th Legacy - Karma - Epica - The Black Halo
Avatarium  : Avatarium - Hurricanes and Halos - The Fire I Long For
Black Book Lodge : Tundra
Nevermore : Dead Heart in a Dead World - The Godless Endeavor - The Obsidian Conspiracy.
Scorpions : Moment of Glory - Unbreakable - Humanity : Hour 1
Gojira : L' Enfant Sauvage - Magma
Joe Satriani : Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards - Unstoppable Momentum - Unstoppable Momentum - What Happens Next
King Diamond : The Puppet Master - Give Me Your Soul ... Please
Venom : Resurrection
Venom Inc. : Avé
Nightwish : Century Child - Dark Passion Play
Charon : The Dying Daylights
Poinsonblack : Escapextasy
Cradle of Filth : Midian - Hammer of The Witches - Cryptoriana – The Seductiveness of Decay
Dimmu Borgir : Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia
Darkthrone : Old Star
Tool : 10000 days - Fear Inoculum
Rotting Christ : Κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού - The Heretics
UFO : You are Here - The Monkey Puzzle
Rammstein : Mutter - Liebe ist für alle da
Triptykon : Eparistera Daimones - Melana Chasmata
Celtic Frost : Monotheist

There are surely others ...

Looks like if something makes all of our lists, or at least most of them, it's probably something we all agree belongs in the top 20. There will be many, many more albums that only one of us is familiar with. If we made it a top 200 list or something insane like that, we'd have a consensus on the top 20 and then everyone takes a turn adding an album up to 200. Like, I'd have 26, 32, 38, and every sixth album after that until I ran out. Charger would be 25, 31, 37, and so on, and each of us getting a slot. We'd have a damn comprehensive list, I tell you what!

Not a bad idea...

But I think indeed we could start the list off with albums we all have in common in our list...make it a joint top 20.

That shouldn't be too hard to accomplish I think.

I prefere the DEP Sessions which, although recorded in 1996, didn't come out until 2004.

I was hoping Black Science by Geezer had been early 2000s but sadly it's 97!

Eight is the last really good NMA album, they went a bit folk/acoustic after that

Yeah... I was thinking about putting Ohmwork on the list though...it's rather brilliant but opted not to yet...

I did miss Maiden's Brave New World and Dance Of Death which I do think should be there...the later ones...not so much.

^A Matter of Life and Death is my second favourite of the reunion albums.

Anyhow...

I had a little time on my hands today so have worked out a top 20. Just need to refine the order. I also decided to make it a little easier on myself and only have one album per band. Thought it was better to spread the love around rather than have some bands with multiple albums hijack the list.

Will do five albums a day starting with 16-20  :drama:

2000-2019

16. Slayer - Christ Illusion
17. Metal Church - XI
18. Exodus - Tempo of the Damned
19. Ozzy Osbourne - Down To Earth
20. Iommi - Fused

Not a game.

Just picking our top 20 favourite albums from the year 2000 onwards.

You can pick what ever albums you want in the heavy metal / hard rock department.

Candlemass-The Door To Doom deserves to be on here one of the best albums to come out in the 2000’s.

And down to my top 5 albums from 2000-2019

5-1

5. Accept - Blood of the Nations
4. Motörhead - Inferno
3. Halford - Resurrection
2. W.A.S.P. - Dominator
1. Iron Maiden - Brave New World

Just a few things to add about my list. 10-20 could’ve been in any order and I agonised over the following albums

Candlemass - Candlemass
Kreator - Violent Revolution
Testament - The Formation of Damnation
Carcass - Surgical Steel
Rammstein - Mutter
High On Fire - Snakes for the Devine
Ghost - Opus Eponymous
Ratt - Infestation

Had them in, then out, then in and then finally out. In the end I went with albums I enjoyed and played a little more on release and continue to revisit just a little more than the 8 I had to leave out.

Decent album but I think Candlemass(2005) King of the Grey Islands & Death Magic Doom are great albums and much better than TDTD.

2. Iced Earth - Framing Armageddon
1. Rush - Clockwork Angels

Very interesting lists KDC and Jack... I can see some albums that would be on my list too...

KDC I am rather surprised to see Framing Armageddon above The Glorious Burden though not to mention overall #2! I love that album too but I still think TGB is better.

Candlemass-The Door To Doom deserves to be on here one of the best albums to come out in the 2000’s.
Decent album but I think Candlemass(2005) King of the Grey Islands & Death Magic Doom are great albums and much better than TDTD.

Agreed... I'd also rank Psalms Of The Dead above The Door To Doom.

I might have them equal or maybe TDTD slightly in front. I could’ve had any of the three Candlemass albums I mentioned in my 20 to be honest. Very little between them but I probably rate great comeback albums after some lean years or disappointing releases just a little higher.

Let’s see your countdown Charger  :)

@Jack

I like Brave New World a lot, it would have been in my list if it was a Top 25. Those first three reunion albums have a lot of good songs on them, they also have too much "filler" in my mind! :)

@Charger

Do you have the European release of The Glorious Burden (1 disc) or the combined US/Euro release (2 disc)? I have the latter and what just drags the album down a notch is the inclusion of The Star Spangled Banner and When the Eagle Cries -- which are pants -- but they aren't on the European version of the release. If I only had the European release I'm not sure which of those albums I would have placed first. ;)

I've got the 2CD edition.

Honestly I love love love love love When The Eagle Cries...it's probably one of the most (if not THE most) emotional songs ever written.

Let’s see your countdown Charger  :)

Okay....

This was in no way an easy task... Everytime I was adding albums I had to cut some fantastic albums...that whole process made me sick to my stomach! :D

I tried to limit myself with 1 album per artist/band since otherwise the list might have been bit one dimensional. But I was forced to cheat on that rule once too...

I'm not going to explain these too much just do what you guys did and post the list...we can all talk about these later on then.

I'll follow KDC and Jack's leads and post 5 per day just to keep it interesting....plus that gives me time to alter the top end of the list if needed! ;D

Part I:

20. Down – II
19. Beyond Fear – Beyond Fear
18. Motörhead – Inferno
17. Megadeth – The World Needs A Hero
16. Hammerfall – Infected

I made my list based on how often I reach for those albums when I want to hear some music. Most frequent on top, least frequent down the list.

This is where we need that top 200 list to fit in all our choices. The top 20 is agonizing to pick through, the bottom 180 are pretty easy to fill out with whatever didn't make the top 20. :smug:

I kind of did the same. Thought about albums that have stayed on heavy rotation even after 20 years.

There were albums that I loved a lot 15 or 20 years ago but have since been all but forgotten so obviously albums like that can't get on the list.

Speaking of which it's time for

Part II:

15. Metal Church – XI
14. Slayer – God Hates Us All
13. Deep Purple – Infinite
12. DIO – Killing The Dragon
11. Candlemass – Death Magic Doom

Moving onward to Part III

10. Black Label Society – 1919 Eternal
9. Jon Oliva’s Pain – Maniacal Renderings
8. Nightwish - Imaginaerum
7. Alice Cooper – Brutal Planet
6. Benedictum – Uncreation

Here I'm gonna explain a bit... With BLS it could have been Mafia too...both are absolutely suberb albums but I do like the heavier side of 1919 more.

Also honestly any JOP album could have made the list but the title track and Through The Eyes Of The King are just fantastic.

True, true. Mine's more hard rock, much less metal. We're definitely covering the spectrum between all of the submissions here.

Indeed.

I could have added several non metal albums as well but my god that would have made it even MORE difficult then...

I modified my list,  I hadn't seen I left Black Sabbath 13 out, that album was long awaited, couldn't leave 13 out, and a good album I must say.

Honorable mentions, Rainbow-Memories In Rock and Black Sabbath-The End, I hadn't added The End because it's an EP.

And of course Candlemass-Door To Doom.

And then it's time for my top 5.

5. Rob Zombie – Hellbilly Deluxe II
4. Heaven & Hell – The Devil You Know
3. DIO – Magica
2. Iced Earth – The Glorious Burden
1. Blaze Bayley – The Tenth Dimension

And here you see my one album per band rule being broken...but then again if any band deserves to have two albums on this list it is DIO.

20 albums is such a small ammount....you are forced to leave out some killer albums there is no way around that.

Artists that didn't make it to the list at all but that could have:
Doro (with either Fear No Evil or Calling The Wild both suberb albums)
Death Penalty (S/T one of the best single album projects in history from Cathedral guitarist Gaz Jennings, wish this band would have carried on)
Witchburn (This Is How We Slay Our Demons is suberb, but just didn't make it to the list)
Anthrax (either Worship Music or For All Kings...both great, but again, there was only room for 20)
Solitude Aeturnus (Alone is without a doubt a DOOOOM masterpiece)

Then ofcourse the two big ones Judas Priest and Iron Maiden...
From Priest Nostradamus and Firepower were into consideration but just didn't quite make the cut as neither is flawless.
From Maiden Brave New World was a contender for a long time, but honestly what zzz said about albums worthy of this list should still be in heavy rotation and all that made it to the top 20 are. But Brave New World is not. I was totally blown away by this album when it came out, but as time as moved on it has become bit more stale. The songs just don't grip me the way that they used to. Also the title track is one of the most boring songs Maiden has ever done. Hands down their worst title track ever. But this still remains my favourite post reunion album but it can't touch the likes of Powerslave or The X Factor...not even close.

This could have easily been a top 30 list...or top 40 if I would have wanted to include non-metal bands too...then we'd have the likes of Melanie C, Sarah Brightman, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Garbage, Sahara Hotnights and the Cranberries included I think...

But all this means is that the 2000s have so far been a pretty darn good time for heavy metal music...and some still dare to claim metal is dead...fuck that. We are metal...and metal never dies!

Love this quote Charger, Metal will never die!

I also agree about Dio.

Okay time for a bit of a summary for now...

Metal Chuch - XI   2
Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden   2
Slayer - God Hates Us All   2
Down - II    2
Megadeth - Dystopia    2
Heaven & Hell - Radio City Music Hall Live   2
Motörhead - Inferno   2
Deep Purple - Infinite   2

DIO - Killing The Dragon   3

Black Sabbath - 13     4
Iron Maiden - Brave New World   4
Heaven & Hell - The Devil You Know 4

So now it would seem that the favourite 3 are Sabbath, Maiden and H&H...which is funny as 2 of them didn't even make it to my list! :D

I think I missed a few that had 2 points though...so feel free to add them.

But I am still happy that quite a few albums appear on many of our lists.

Sounds like we need a help and hurt game to get the rankings just right on those... Don't know if The Devil You Know really is better than Dystopia, for example... but I'd also need to catch up on the albums I haven't listened to, as well, before I could make an honest vote on them.

That ain’t gonna work. Our lists are quite varied. I doubt anyone is gonna take the time to listen to other people albums they’re not versed in, and one listen doesn't cut it anyway.

Yeah that wouldn't be fair at all...

I think we'll just compile a list of bands that have gotten more than one pick and go from there and ofcourse band/album that has the most picks would be the over all favourite.

Never mind then... :D

Well it has been a while since we did this list...

Any albums released this year that might have gotten on your lists by dropping your #20?

My list seemed to have been like this:

20. Down – II
19. Beyond Fear – Beyond Fear
18. Motörhead – Inferno
17. Megadeth – The World Needs A Hero
16. Hammerfall – Infected
15. Metal Church – XI
14. Slayer – God Hates Us All
13. Deep Purple – Infinite
12. DIO – Killing The Dragon
11. Candlemass – Death Magic Doom
10. Black Label Society – 1919 Eternal
9. Jon Oliva’s Pain – Maniacal Renderings
8. Nightwish - Imaginaerum
7. Alice Cooper – Brutal Planet
6. Benedictum – Uncreation
5. Rob Zombie – Hellbilly Deluxe II
4. Heaven & Hell – The Devil You Know
3. DIO – Magica
2. Iced Earth – The Glorious Burden
1. Blaze Bayley – The Tenth Dimension

I'm seriously thinking about replacing Infinite with Whoosh...the more time has passed the more that album has grown on me...it's just so damn complex album...

Also was just thinking about Type O Negative's Dead Again which is pretty close of replacing Down II....

I too might have to reconsider my list. Not because of any release in 2020 but because I've discovered at least two great albums this year I hadn't previously been aware of.

I'd definitely slot in Whoosh! and SVM's Faithless Rituals into the top 21 list I made, and that would drop Dio's Killing the Dragon and Megadeth's Dystopia. Armored Saint's latest is some top shelf stuff, could very well bump Infinite off, but I'd keep Glenn Hughes' ROCK on my list.
