I wanted to start up a new thread for the finals in the World Cup 2018... So here it is!
Uruguay v Portugal - should be fun, maybe Uruguay surprises and advances to the quarterfinal.
France v Argentina - If Charger doesn't get to the betting shop in time, Argentina will have a real chance here. :problem:
Brazil v Mexico - Hard to say, but I think Mexico wins this one.
Belgium v Japan (here I am, predicting the outcome of a current game) - Belgium. Duh!
Spain v Russia - Spain will take Russia out of the running.
Croatia v Denmark - Croatia. I like what they've been doing so far.
Sweden v Switzerland - Sweden takes this one. They stumbled against Germany, but found their way against Mexico.
Colombia v England - England brings their a-game and wins.

And now, like a total idiot, I shall predict the winner...
Uruguay beats Argentina
Belgium beats Brazil or Mexico, doesn't matter. And if England pulls it out and is the #1 seed for Group G, it will win.
Croatia beats Spain
England (or Belgium) beats Sweden (or Switzerland)
That gets us to England or Belgium beating either Uruguay or Croatia. Croatia gets 3rd place and then Belgium beats England to get 1st.
So I'm with Jack the Stripper: Belgium wins it all.
CAUTION: If Charger bets to support any of these teams I've picked to win, then they go all to hell. If Charger places the right bets, it could be Russia v Japan in the final...

Two very even and goalless matches ahead today..
France vs Argentina....since Argentina was before the games my pick to win the Cup I have to with them...but it is quite possible that they'll go home today.
Uruguay vs Portugal...knowing the way both teams play this is gonna be super even...I'll say after 90 minutes it will be 0-0...which one will win after Over time and or Penalty Kicks is anyone's guess but you know me I'm always rooting for Christiano Ronal...ehhh I mean Portugal!

Uruguay have been in cracking form and expect them to beat Portugual however you can't ignore the Ronaldo factor.
France v Argentina is an interesting one. Argentina have been a disappointment and are very lucky to have got through to the knockout stage. Maybe they've got some confidence from their win over Nigeria but I'm gonna go with the more reliable France in this one.

Pretty even so far as expected...although I have to say I thought it would have been 0-0 after the first half instead of 1-1
France was playing really strongly but then kind of lost their way a little bit...Argentina's playing improved a lot after DiMaria's goal.

France was nothing like ever before... in fact haven't seen France like this since the Zidane days...
Argentina put up a good fight but too many mistakes and fouls...Safe to say the better team won.

So part 2 of todays Europe vs South America...and it was a bit of a rematch for South America as they (sadly) got the better of Portugal who played a fantastic second half but Uruguay's defense was just too strong.
Two great matches and two great teams advanced and two great teams are out. But them the apples at this stage of the tournament.

Sadly I was out at a BBQ and missed both games (although the scores were announced)! It looks like I missed a couple of great matches and I'm sure the hi-lights programme later won't do them justice.
Personally, I'm glad France and Uruguay went through... us Brits have history with Argentina and as mentioned on the Footsy thread I'm no fan of Mr Ronaldo.

Spain vs Russia...Uruguay already showed that Russia was hardly invinsible and that they had huge problems in their defence so Spain should nail them to the wall.
Croatia vs Denmark...this is gonna be more even both teams play strong defence and great forward game so anything can happen, but I am rooting for Croatia all the way here!

Yeah despite home advantage, I just can't see Russia progressing further, they've done well to get this far. I could see this being a strole for Spain, like 3-0 or 4-1!
Croatia have been good so far, Denmark have been solid without making any sort of noise. It has to be Croatia but it could be tight.

1-1 at half time, plenty of posession for Spain but they show no interest in taking the game to the Russians, who are more in this game than I expected. Spain need to pick things up in the second half... and I think they will.

Russia has blocked Spains offenses pretty well....surprisingly well even I'd say. They are playing on a whole different leven than they were against Uruguay.
This might much closer match than I predicted.

First half of Extra Time is done and Spain has had some chances...
All I can say I hope this won't go to penalty kicks because then it comes down to luck and then there is a strong chance that the worse team (Russia by far in this case) might advance.

I might check that out...might not though...not a big fan of documentaries because it is really hard to know just how biast and how colored they are.
But the truth is after the whole doping scandal I really find it extremely hard to believe they would even risk using doping now...especially considering just how hard it would be to do it undetected now.
Anyways back on topic...
I am afraid to say anything anymore because pretty much everything I say the exact opposite happens...when I believe it will be a low goal match we get a 4-3 and when I think it'll be a high goal match we get a 1-1 to the Penalty kicks...
But man I do want Croatia to win...which ofcourse means Denmark will win...

Last night was a dramatic night of football. Had a feeling Russia would win. Even thinking they might get through to the SF.
Expecting both Brazil and Belgium to win tonight. Brazil hasn't failed to make the QF stage since 1990 and Mexico has never beaten Brazil in a World Cup game and it's hard to see that changing tonight. In saying that, this has been a World Cup of shocks!

Yep, that was a poor showing on Mexico's part. They were hot coming into the World Cup then started faltering. They have South Korea to thank for making it to the knockout round, and rather than taking full advantage of that gift they just fell apart.

I can see a team starting "Sw" progressing to the quarters... but I've no idea which! I think Switzerland are ranked higher so I'll go with them!
In the other game if England doesn't win it inside 120 minutes we'll lose the penalty shoot out... we always do! It could go either way, Naturally I'm sorta edging towards England but it will be close, maybe just a single goal in it.

Phew! with Belgium .. I watched the replay today and what a cracking game of football... Can't help but think that Japan cost themselves the win though by not shutting the game down when they went 2 - 0. Instead they chased that 3rd goal and opened it for Belgium to score and then steal the win.
Will be rooting hard for England tonight. Am thinking they could even give the Colombians a bit of a touch up. If they get past Colombia they're a great chance to get through to the semi final.
Also hoping the Swedes get up in regular time as I took them in a treble with Belgium and Brazil last night.
I backed Belguim at the start of the tournament but I've since also had a sneaky bet on France as I've been mightily impressed with them so far and Belgium will have to beat them to make the final. Don't think the winner will come from the other side of the draw unless Russia happens to get through.

Sweden vs Switzerland...I'm betting on a draw here...both teams are rather slow and defence oriented. But after 90 minutes I would very much like to see the Swiss win...just because I really really really don't want to see Sweden win.
Colombia vs England...I agree with Charlie that if this goes to penalty kicks England has so much bad carma from those that all bets are off...but I doubt we'll get that far. England has played it's best footsy in years and years now and Colombia wasn't nearly as strong anymore as they were 4 years ago so England should finish this in the first 90 mins..

Well this should be an interesting day...
Uruguay vs France...super even this one. Both teams got good defence vs great forward...so what'll come out of that...I'm thinking 0-0.
Brazil vs Belgium....Belgium's offence leaves nothing to be desired but same can NOT be said about their defence which was nearly painfully evident in the Japan match...and now they are faced with a much stronger team. So either they have to change their defence a lot or they are going home...which I (sadly) believe will happen...but might take longer than 90 minutes though.

I don't mind who wins either quarter final but I think the French might just scrape past Uruguay, and I think Belgium might scrape past Brazil... they've not been at their best this tournament and it might be their last game.

These games are so hard to pick tonight. Uruguay have been sensational in this World Cup only conceding the 1 goal. They've been coached by the same coach for the last 12 years and it shows in their game, they play like a very well organised club team. Cavani will be be a big loss though which is why I'm slightly leaning towards France, Uruguay can still win without him though.
Obviously I'm going for Belguim but not with any confidence at all given who they're playing.

Well , putting Neymar's roulades end to end since the beginning of the tournament cost the others teams 14 minutes of time. Mbappé is so far away from that , although he made a shameful simulation in front of Rodriguez who gives it a shot during the action. tbh, some Urugayan players behaved like butchers.
Anyway, our level rises match after match and it feels more and more good ... :beerbang:

Glad I had a saver on France though as it means at least one of my teams will make it through to the final although Belgium was my original tip and is a much better result for me $

Sweden vs England...Everyone should already know how Sweden plays...nothing but defence and then get one lucky goal in and win the game....that's been the formula all along so England will have a hard time breaking the swedish dumb luck...I am rather certain that this will go 0-0...up until that point the swedes get that lucky shot...but I'm still rooting for England because they deserve to win!

It started slowly, both teams were nervous to start with. England have settled better and if Sterling had a bit more control when 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper we might have been 3-0 up! I think we needed another as we always conceed!

Belgium's defence was horrible during the Japan match and nearly incredible during the Brazil match...so if they can keep that up it'll be hard for Mbappe, Giroud and Griezmann to score.
This could honestly go either way but I personally just enjoy Belgium's active offence playing just a tad bit more so I'd like to see them win.

Both teams have been a surprise in making it this far. England have had a charmed run all the way to the semi's but deserves to be there as does Croatia.
Not an easy game to predict. England have been brilliant at set pieces in this World Cup whilst Croatia has been poor at defending set pieces but England haven't come up against a midfield as good as Croatia's.
Just hope it's a great match with plenty of goals and drama.

Today's match should be equally exciting as yesterday's was...
Both England and Croatia have played an absolutely SUBERB tournament so far. Which probably is a bit of a surprise actually...I doubt many expected those two countries to be fighting for a place at the finals.
Croatia's team has been a real treat to watch as they have played really solid footsy and Modric is a genius in the middle field...always reminds me of Xavi in his prime.
England's got the best team and best coach they've had in decades I'd say and it shows.
Going to the match England has a slight advantage over Croatia because the last to matches Croatia has been forced to play the full 120 mins and penalty kicks...England on the other hand has won both so they have a lot less minutes behind them and at this stage of the tournament that WILL show.
So I believe England will win, but again honestly I'll be happy either way.

To be honest England have gone further in this tournament than anyone expected. Sure we were probably going to get out of the group but we didn't think we would go much further.
Obviously us English have hopes for getting to the final but if we go out tonight I don't think anyone will be too dissapointed. As has been pointed out the squad are young and inexperienced... the next two or three tournaments are where they are going to shine!
Having said that -- and accepting that Croatia are equally deserving of being in the semi-final -- I do think that we have a good chance of beating them, but I think it will be tight: 1-0 or 2-1 and I wouldn't rule out penalties.

Ok so we're 1-0 up at half time and probably had the better of the half. I wish we had got another goal because Croatia are not out of this and although they didn't create much they only need the one chance.

Haven't really seen a match like this before where the focus has changed so evenly between the two teams...but I guess that just showed how good and most importantly EVEN both teams were.

Croatia won, and they played a lot better after half time... I said we should have got a second!
England did well but when it mattered they couldn't make any clear cut chances. I think we were poor going forward, particularly in the second half and extra time.
But I shouldn't be too dissapointed we went much further than we expected. Here's for 3rd place! ;)

Bronze match today!!
Both Belgium and England can be pretty darn proud of their tournament...England maybe even more as they had very little expectations put on them.
I'm going with a bit different approach on this one...my brain says Belgium will probably win this one too like they did their previous encounter BUT my heart says England has more desire to bring atleast the Bronze home so I'm going with them!

CONGRATS TO FRANCE they played a great tournament..very very steady team.
But can take nothing away from CROATIA they too played a fantastic tournament and have proven once and for all that they are a force to be reckoned with!
All in all this had been a great tournament...lots of great matches and historically only one 0-0 match...

France won because they took their chances and defended really well. Croatia had a great tournament but ouldn't quite manage the final stretch.

Croatia have had an amazing tournament and can hold their heads very high. Three extra time matches in the lead up and one less day's break than France did them no favours though.
