I have found myself needing a drink of two now in the past couple of days...
Finished a bottle of Bulleit Bourbon as I'm writing this... And no I did NOT drink all of it tonight!

Is it 45% abv where you live or 40%? We use to be 45% here but now we only get the 40% version.

It is the 45% or 90proof here. Although I buy it from Germany as it costs there about half of what it costs here.
It is one of my favourite Bourbons...along with Blanton's...although now bought a bottle of Rowan's Creek which I've never had...but I'm hoping it's atleast as good!
-
First try at a small batch Bourbon called Rowan's Creek!
100.1 proof. Quite strong yet quite smooth with a nice opening bite. Quite different from any other Bourbon I've had. I am quite pleased with it indeed.
-
Wow... two months almost to the date and I'm drinking that same stuff again. Pretty cool.
Gotta say Rowan's Creek has become one of my new favourite rare bourbons...I might get another bottle of this stuff in the future if I can!

Trying something new today:

It would be nice if drinking absinthe gave one better-defined abs.
Or a synthesizer. :D
-
Or a non ugly face...I'd settle for that! :D
But it didn't taste nearly as bad as I thought...in fact it was quite good.

I saw a recipe for absinthe-flavored ice cream the other day. That was fun to watch.

Having a christmas Cigar (not Cuban today but Nicaraguan) accompanied by a wonderful Bourbon called BASIL HAYDEN'S...

A big thank you to ZZZ for sharing this link:
https://www.thecoolist.com/best-bourbons/ (https://www.thecoolist.com/best-bourbons/)
That's what made me want to try this one out and oh boy...oh boy am I glad I did...this goes straight to the top 3 of my best bourbon's list!
-
Glad I could help! :D
Is the cigar a flavoured one or straight tobacco?
-
Cigar was just plain top quality nicaraguan tobacco. A really good one I might add.
-
Trying out some new Absinthe. 140 proof this time...
Tastes pretty good this one too. I think I'm becoming a bit of an absinthe guy...
-
(https://i.pinimg.com/originals/5f/61/2b/5f612bb47b70f535fb402e7a9b7cda07.jpg)
-
Didn't do that...
I could drink more of that stuff with Olivia Munn though...but I don't think there's enough Absinthe in the world for her to do that with me.
-
So I read about the history and manufacture of absinthe, and I ask are you drinking distilled absinthe or cold process?
-
The previous one I had was distilled but I have no idea about this one but I'm assuming it's also distilled.
-
Checked the brand, it's a Spanish distilled brand. Some fun facts include that Absinthe was never banned in Spain or Portugal, so they've kept their distilling practices intact over the years. The Czech brands tend to favor cold processing, which means typically more alcohol content and less taste.
There are even absinthe fountains for controlled drips of the ice water on to the sugar cube. Supposed to aid in the flavor bloom process.
-
Yeah...I'm just using a water bottle with that sports cap to drip the water on the sugar cube...it still works pretty well but I think if you want the maximum effect you should have that auto dripper device.
The whole banning of Absinthe was rather foolish and ignorant...but then again most bannings of things always are.
-
It was interesting in that *all* the evils of alcohol were laid at absinthe's door. There was an infamous murder case where a guy drank a bunch of alcohol prior to the murders, but because he had 2 glasses of absinthe at the end of his bender, absinthe took all the blame on that one, and that accelerated the campaign against "the green fairy".
-
Yeah...there's another example of what I said...
-
Dr Pepper Zero Sugar
It's a definite difference from Diet Dr Pepper and an improvement over DP 10. I enjoy it very much, plan to continue with it.
-
I would rather drink my own urine than Dr Pepper.... I once bought a half a litre bottle of dr. pepper...had a sip then threw it away! God that shit's awful...just awful.

I can tell, then, that you're not from Texas. :smug:

No sir I ain't.
I love Texas though and would love to visit...but if it includes I must drink Dr. Pepper it'll be a hard pass...even if Richard Rawlings himself would be offering to buy me one...
-
It's OK, DP consumption is not required.
Just means more for me, anyway!

I bought a few special Bourbon's for this christmas...heck might be the last ones I ever buy...my abdominal region doesn't appreciate alcohol the way it used to due to what ever reason that has yet to be determined mainly due to the inefficiency of the Finnish public health care system but that's a story for another time and another place...
I bought some Woodford Reserve which I'm expecting to be excellent, some Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon, Old Grand Dad Kentucky Bourbon and Journeyman Distillery's Not A King Rye Whiskey...I was pondering which one to open for the Xmas and decided to go with this one:
And I have to say...goddamn! I mean GODDAMN! I haven't had a lot of Rye in the past...in fact I think I've only had Knob Creek Rye (which was excellent by the way) and I wanted some Rye now because I wanted something special...and Journeyman happened to be on sale in the German site I buy from...only 34.95€...granted the bottle is only 0.5l but still...and I have to say it is rather brilliant stuff. Very different...rye whiskey has a certain very special flavour to it which is unlike anything else. And this being from Michigan it makes it that much more special. Also this is a hand numbered batch Bottle # 151 of batch 2. Which is kind of cool as well.
I can't say if this is great among rye whiskey's as I really haven't had enough of them to say but as a something of a Bourbon fan I can say that this is rather excellent indeed...and worth a trye...see what I did there <-
-
Great to have discoveries that blow your mind.
-
Indeed. I'm now bit regretting I didn't get more into the world of Rye Bourbons...granted there isn't a huge ammount of them available in these parts but still...
-
I haven't had a whole lot of Port wines in my time (more of a sherry man myself) but I thought what the heck...
So I went with this from Portugal called Taylor's 2016 Vintage.
Very interesting stuff. The smell notes are very sweet and fruity but it packs a bit of a tang in the taste department. I honestly haven't had enough Ports to say if that's common or not.
However I am liking this. This is quite complex...and with every sip you're left pondering what it is that your tasting at the moment.

Gin and Tonic!
I usually don't have cocktails or other lady drinks but Gin & Tonic isn't half bad actually.

Some Gin & Tonic while I'm setting up the new computer!

Dr. Pepper Zero Sugar - Cherry flavour here
-
Bought some Rye when I won and finally got the chance to taste it.
I haven't been drinking a lot of Rye Whiskey...I think I've had Knob Creek and Journyman only...but I saw this in the Finnish liquor store for nearly the same ammount (69.90€) than in Germany so I though why not.
Quite different from the others and Rye certainly has it's own flavour. This is quite sweet and has hints of cinnamon and vanilla I think...but still with a dry finish... I personally prefer bit smoother bourbons but this isn't bad...

I've been wanting to try out The Macallan for pretty much as long as I have been drinking whisky...and that's been a loooooong time. But the price has always been bit too much for me but finally I thought what the heck...and on my recent boat trip this was on sale and only cost 74,90€ so I went for it.
THE MACALLAN QUEST
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52584234118_f1e716e2a7_c.jpg)
Granted this is among their cheapest but I do have to say it is very good. There's a deep richness to it which is bit uncommon for a Highland Single Malt most likely due to it being matured in four different types of casks both European and American...adding a lot of flavour to it.
I'm not saying this is the best Scotch I've ever had....I think that title is still tied between Lagavulin 16 YO and Glenlivet 18 YO but this is right up there for sure...and it also makes me want to try some of their finer stuff... 12 YO is around 120€ and Estate is 269€...damn...well maybe one day.
But for this christmas I'll be enjoying the hell out of this Quest to find the bottom of the bottle!
-
I wish I enjoyed Scotch - I have simply never been able to get into it. Maybe I've just never had any that was worth a crap, I don't know. I don't drink very often, maybe four drinks over the course of a year, so when I do, I try to have something I like :)
Maybe I'll try some of that stuff, Charger. A guy at work is a big bourbon fan, belongs to some booze of the month club and all that, I might ask him if he has any. Not sure if he gets anything other than bourbon or if they send him a variety.
-
What do you drink then when you feel like having one Vyn?
I used to be more of a Scotch fan but I have actually found myself enjoying Bourbons more and more. I always try to find some new Bourbons to try out as well as Scotches...
The thing with scotch is that usually price tells a big story. Cheap ones just aren't very good...there are few exeptions like The Observer 20 Y.O Single Grain which is great and only costs around 35€ a bottle.
But usually if you want good scotch may it be Islay, Highland or Speyside stuff under 50€ a bottle tend to be bit rough.
Bourbon's are bit more forgiving and cheap ones can be really good too. The Four Roses being a good example of a good tasting but cheap bourbon. The middle range is wider in bourbons I think than in Scotches. Quality stuff from 30 to 50€...Scotch the good middle range goes from 40 to 60€...
Naturally these are German prices here...you can double them to get the Finnish prices...and ofcourse some might be even cheaper over there...especially speaking of Bourbons.
I've been trying to venture out a bit and try new things...I've recently started going through Gins...and some Rums too.
-
I like to sip on clear tequila, something like Herradura Ultra Anejo, or some Blanton's single barrel if I'm in a bourbon mood. If it's beer, I tend to go for Chimay Red if I can find it.
But that's if I am at home. If I'm over to someone's place, or maybe out fishing or at a bonfire, I'll choke down whatever swill is being served lol. I've drank more Busch beer than I can recall.
-
I've had Blanton's Single Barrel...it is excellent indeed!
Tequila is something I haven't tried out too much but I did buy a bottle of 1800 Reposado a while back and it is quite good. I have actually been wanting to explore more Tequilas but they are rather rare (and rather expensive) here and in Germany. I've never tried clear tequila though. Don't know if there is a taste difference though...Never had one with the worm either...Or is that Mezcal actually?
-
Jack Daniel's.
Like on every other 9/11. It's become a tradition. I've had every 12th off as well. It's my way of remembering.

Did you *drink* the cigar?
Seriously, how did the combo turn out for you? And what's the story with the cigar?
-
I did not drink the cigar I smoked it...
Combo worked very well. The soft smokiness of the Ledaig balanced the cigar very well.
Not much story there...I have been having a proper cigar for christmas and new years eve for years and years now...it has become something of a tradition for me.
-
Tonight no cigar but some Small Batch Bourbon!!
And this is very good. Smooth yet flavourful. Aged only 4 years but surprisngly good.
-
Just a good philosophy of life: a little bit of the good stuff is always better than a whole bunch of the cheap crap.

What's funny is finding a guy from Ireland that doesn't like Guinness going off on how everyone else loves the stuff. Fun times!
-
I thought it was law to like Guinness in Ireland!
-
As did I. Hence the humour in an Irishman kicking off about the stuff.

Thanks to my sick leave I can start my Xmas bottles little early this year...
Found a new one this year...and I'm sure ZZZ will appreciate this as it's from TEXAS!
Never had Texas bourbon (or should that just be called whiskey?) before and it's a really special kind of surprise this one....very smooth and has a different flavour to it than Kentucky Bourbon does...
I have another one that's bit more special than this one but that stays sealed untill christmas eve.
-
That is a surprise to me, as I didn't know Texas was a corn whiskey maker. That is interesting, indeed!
-
Yellow Rose appears to be the biggest one in Texas, but not the only one!
And for Christmas Eve I am having this:
This one was a new find for me. I've had Single Malts from the Isle Of Arran before but never Machrie Moor. And ooohhh myyyy is this one smooth. Goddamn! Peated, rich and smooth.
Quite a surprise this one! Wasn't even that expensive!
The Cigar is from Nicaragua. Joya's Antano. Another new find...

As promised the other special Bourbon got opened just now!

For this christmas era I took my mission to find bourbons that were NOT from Kentucky (or Tennessee for that matter) and this was the first one I spotted and I knew I wanted to try it out!
HIGH WEST WISKEY's American Prairie Bourbon from Park City UTAH! That's right UTAH!
Small Patch and 46%...This is quite smooth but still packs quite the punch once it's landed...and warms my cockles nicely. This wasn't crazy expensive either...under 50€ the bottle.
I was expecting this maybe to taste bit more "different" but it's pretty solid bourbon...maybe bit less sweet than some of it's Kentucky cousins....
-
I've actually had a glass of that High West - it was tasty!
One of our clients, McCormick's Distillery (they are actually our first client back in 1984!) brewed up a barrel of bourbon for our 40th anniversary earlier this year. They've been making whiskey for a long time (read about them here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCormick_Distilling_Company (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCormick_Distilling_Company)).
Some of us went out to their place in Weston and spent the day touring and tasting stuff. The bourbon we eventually went with had been curing in a small cave.
Anyway, this is one of the bottles from that, going to open it up and have a drink tonight!
-
Well now THAT is SPECIAL! Enjoy!
-
I'm carrying on with my exploration to Bourbon's outside Kentucky...
This time I'm venturing into INDIANA:
6 years aged 100 Proof RYE WHISKEY from Lawenceburg Indiana called ROSSVILLE UNION.
I don't think I've had 100 proof Bourbon before...I'm not sure...I have had barrel strength Scotch before and many 90+ proofs... With Scotch single malts even the strong ones can be quite smooth and easy to drink...I wasn't sure what to expect from Bourbon, but I did think it might be bit less smooth...and I was right. But the warm feeling you get deep down takes the harder edge off pretty quickly.
It has the typical Rye tang to it...This might be better with a drop of water in it...or a cube of ice that you let melt for a bit...to smooth it out. But it's still pretty good...But not something to have multiples of...
-
I know St. Patrick's Day was yesterday but I had to work last night so I'm celebrating today with some Black Stuff!
