Well it's spring time and that ofcourse means a new greenhouse season starts!
Do you have a greenhouse? Are you growing something? Here's the place to talk about them.
I planted my first Bell Pepper and Chili seeds in early January and they are now growing rather nicely...my first Luteus Bell Peppers are forming already and my chili's are blossoming nicely. Got about 15 or so Bell peppers and Chilis growing now. One Yellow Bell Pepper I even managed to keep alive during the winter.
Put down my tomato seeds in Feb/march and they too are growing nicely on my window sill. Got about 20 or so Tomatoes...Yellow Cherry, Purple Cherry, classic Money Maker and few others.
I'm hoping I'd be able to transfer them all to the Greenhouse in late May, but who knows...last year it was early June and then we got a long cold season that lasted most of June and halted the growth entirely..
-
My wife is tending the gardens this year, lots of flowers up front.
I've grown tomatoes before, but haven't had the urge to do so of late. But homegrown tomatoes are like true love, truly amazing flavor.

I wouldn't know but I sure like my tomatoes!

Well took my first tomato plants and cucumbers and bell peppers and chilis in the greenhouse today....it's bit too warm in there already so I have to spray them with water every hour or so...
But this is a record though...never have I been able to take plants out this early. Hell last year at this time we had +7C (45F)!!!
-
Been really warm this past week so my greenhouse is starting to get some greens in the house...
Some Bell Peppers and Chilis:

Some cucumbers:

And some Tomatoes:

Also got some salad and strawberries growing in there....more tomatoes to go in in the next couple of days hopefully.

I never knew you had such a green thumb, Charger. :)

I never knew you had such a green thumb, Charger. :)
Thanks! :D
Well I live in the country side so I get to dabble in the garden.
-
I might want to get a greenhouse, if for no other reason than to have a place to grow things without having the birds get to them... but it gets to 40C easily here in Texas... would that mean that the greenhouse can get too hot?

Grow cactus. :P

Wouldn't that be Cacti? :D Yeah I know this is a good way to get punched in the nose but couldn't help it! :D
But yeah ZZZ you'd have to have some sort of a shading for it....cause when outdoor temp is around 20C it can be 40C inside the greenhouse easily if left unattented...and that's already death for most plants...
But some chilis would probably do okay especially with hydroponics...
-
We measure our temperatures in the shade. :'(

Things are starting to ripen up in my greenhouse
Tomatoes are getting some color:

Same with my Apache chilis:

Erotica Chili isn't changing color yet but should be close:

My pumpkins are growing too...maybe just maybe this year I can actually have some pumpkins to carve for Halloween!

Do you grow organically or do you use commercially-produced pesticides/foods?

Do you grow organically or do you use commercially-produced pesticides/foods?
I use pesticides and fertilizers when needed...I don't give a flying rats ass about organic. Hate the whole concept of it! Plus nothing would grow like that anyways. :D

I hadn't noticed this thread yet!
Nice growing vegetables photos Charg '! Metal fans will always surprise me in all areas.
I have a small garden (400 m2) but it's only an ornamental garden: flowering shrubs, flower bulbs and perennials or potted plants.
One of my grandmothers was gardening a lot: potatoes, beans, cabbage, but also chrysanthemum for the day of the dead, November 2nd.
And yet, the seeds of vegetables, beans, flower bulbs, turf, film of growth or mulching, tomato stakes, mini-greenhouses are far from unknown to me because my job is to sell these bags and boxes in specialized stores. for almost 16 years. :)
-
Re. organic... I actually prefer growing that way, as I get much better microbes in the soil and more birds around my home that way.

I'm full of surprises! Usually bad ones but still! ;D
I've got so flower beds sprilinked around my yard too...don't really pay enough attention to those anymore these days. But the greenhouse is my baby!
Would love to see pics of your garden buddy!
Re. organic... I actually prefer growing that way, as I get much better microbes in the soil and more birds around my home that way.
I had a huuuge aphid infestation in my greenhouse this year...and those bastards were resistant to pyrethroids so getting rid of them from my chilis was virtually impossible until I got my hands on a new agriculture grade insecticide...that got rid of them once and for all...and now my chili's and bell peppers are growing again.
I used to spend about an hour a day killing those bugs by hand from every single leaf of the plants...it was a monster task...especially since the next day they were just as plentiful again. I am thankful for the good stuff.
Birds don't really go into the greenhouse anyways so using insecticide has no effect on that.
-
Kind of kicked off 2019's growing season off now by ordering seeds for Chilis.
Got 5 new kinds of chilis again for this year...ranging from mild to hot...including some ornamental ones too...like the Purple UFO and Coyote Zan White.
Can't wait to see what comes out of them...and most importantly will they grow or will I kill them all...which has happened in the past with new kinds of chilis....
-
Today is just planted my chili seeds.
Got 7 different types...ordered just 5 but the seller was gracious enough to include two more as a free bonus which was rather nice...
All are new types for me too so it'll be exciting to see what comes of them.

My wife replaced the dead indoor plants with plastic ones.
Only one that wasn't dead was the bamboo plant.
I swear, bamboo can take over the world.
-
I swear, bamboo can take over the world.
Only the warm world though as it does not survive subzero temps.

Nothing against your wife, but I think artificial plants in one's home is disgusting.

It is very rare to get plants into the greenhouse in May here...but ofcourse after couple of weeks of exeptionally warm weather now as soon as I got the stuff out there it got cold again...Only 14C (57F) out now...and cloudy... :(
-
bravo Charger ! :pub:
nice tomato plants here !
-
Thanks buddy! Got yellow cherry, classic Money Maker and Shirley and then two Blue Green Zebras. Also not in the pic yet are Ace 55s and Plum tomato Roma.
Also got few cucumbers in addition to the chilis.
-
I'll be moving to a new house in a few weeks, wondering what patch of yard I could tear up to make a garden... I have tomato envy of Charger!

Smells good ! Bio culture , Charger ? No chemical treatment ?
-
Smells good ! Bio culture , Charger ? No chemical treatment ?
No I use fertilizers and I do use pesticides (mostly just Pyrethrins though which is a natural pesticide...but last year I had aphids that were immune to pyrethrins so I had to use stronger stuff) have to if you wan't any kind of harvest... But usually just one or two treatments per season is needed...and only on the leaves too not on the fruit...I visit the greenhouse many times a day I usually spot infestation pretty early on so not a lot of pesticide is ever needed.
-
Here, since January 1st 2019, all products of chemical origin are prohibited for use and storage in non-professional gardens. Only products of organic origin are allowed.
Garden centers therefore offer softer techniques. For weeds, we struggle with any kind of mulching, or hand tools.
I deposited at the municipal dump all the old chemical weed killers, insects killers and others poisons that remained rotting in the back of my garage.
-
Oh that's pretty harsh... I couldn't imagine that happening here...chemical pesticides are at times the only things that actually work.
-
I've had good luck with rolling my own stuff at home. Ingredients I've used include cayenne pepper, pure castile liquid soap, cedar oil, tobacco juice, and naphtha.
Cedar chips and sulfur powder are very good for keeping away most bugs, I've found.

A small Greenhouse update:
Cucumbers are growing like crazy...
Some tomatoes are on their way as well...I'm expecting them to start turning red in two weeks or so...
-
Aaand surprise surprise after the heat wave the greenhouse is now pretty much overtaken by mites..:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetranychus_urticae (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetranychus_urticae)
Cucumbers are pretty filled with them... I spend an hour there today spraying the leaves first with pesticide and then with water to try and avoid leaf burn...but things aren't looking too good...
And aphids have taken over most of my chilis. So did the same with them...we shall see.
This is another down side of long dry heat periods....this pests breed like rabbits...actually no...they breed about 3000 times faster than rabbits.
Tomatoes are luckily pretty resilient so they are okay but the rest...yikes.
-
^^^^^^
I thought the point of a greenhouse was to keep out the pests. :o
-
Well in order to keep those little buggers out the greehouse would have to be air tight! :D
-
Aaaaand the season is over. Just cleared up the Greenhouse after last nights below freezing temps that killed everything.
Had a good season...one of the best actually. A whole heap of tomatoes, lots of cucumbers and plenty of Chilis.
I am going to try to keep 5 chilis alive through the winter...one Habanero, one Birds Eye Baby which I'm gonna try to turn into a bonsai, one Purple UFO and one Oro De Ecuador...I've had bad track record with this though...in the past only ONE plant has ever survived through the winter. Lack of light and pests are the big problems...we shall see...
-
It's already below freezing in Finland?
High of 27 C / 87 F in Texas to-day.
-
After record brakingly cold spring things are finally looking up a bit...
Which ofcourse means my new greenhouse is finally taking shape!
-
Here in Dallas, we had record rainfall, my tomatoes are a washout. :(
-
The UK has had very little rainfall in May. Most areas had less tha 10% of the normal amount, but it makes up for earlier in the year when we had too much!
-
It's been too much flood or drought here, for sure. I'd prefer things be more leveled out for sure.
-
Well finally my new greenhouse is filled with stuff...It's still a work in progress but atleast stuff is growing...

Thanks. Took me a while because:
I'm a one man show in everything.

Then, in that case, for what looks to be some very well-done carpentry,
:applause:

Haha! Thanks...not really that well done but thanks anyways...

New year new greenhouse season start!
I'm am planning on planting my first Chili seeds today. Got some new varieties again and some old ones that have been proven to be good ones. Last year I didn't have any really hot ones and I didn't take any super hot ones this year either as those are rather hard to utilize but I did take some varieties that can be called hot so lets see if they'll grow.
-
Thanks.
Let's hope I can fill it up next summer as well...
-
I wish you could attach produce to a post for everyone to taste...

Awesome! My wife is growing a herb garden and some tomatoes, hope we don't get a drought this year. :)
-
^^^Congrats Charger !! your greenhouse is exemplary cleanliness ! What soil do you use? obviously it isn't some garden soil but rather a special soil for planting and sowing ...
Thanks!
I'm using a mixture of peat and regular garden soil. About 70% peat 30% soil. The peat gives it air and prevents it from hardening. The soil gives it some weight and traps in more moisture.
Tomatoes and Cucumbers espcially like it...chilis aren't quite so picky but they also do seem to like peat.

This is what I thought when looking at the pic. You don't have to worry about sourcing peat in Finland ? Here, the potting mixes sold in the trade contain less and less of it as well as the biodegradable pots which are more and more often in coconut fiber. The reason given for no longer including peat in the composition of these gardening items is that peatlands are CO2 traps and that by continuing to exploit them, we release a large amount of this greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.

Peat production is still strong in Finland but it is getting cut down by the lefty-green government all the time...sadly...as it means the loss of livelyhood for hundreds and hundreds of people.. But luckily it is still wildely available as we have a lot of marshes...and the promise is that garden peat would remain available, but who knows...All I know is that it is the perfect soil for the greenhouse...and for the pumpkins too. :)
Awesome! My wife is growing a herb garden and some tomatoes, hope we don't get a drought this year. :)
Every year I try to leave some room for herbs but there never is any...

I envy your plant growing skills Charger!
-
I love watching this guy's YouTube channel for a few reasons:
1. I love listening to his voice, it's got great character.
2. He has a beautiful orchard.
3. He works with a permaculture mindset, trying to have nature do as much of the work as possible. I find that soothing.
4. Because he wants to work with nature, he talks a lot about how nature is working, so I usually learn something interesting from his videos.
-
I must have a different species of rabbit in my neighborhood than this guy has. I see them grazing on my property eating their favorite weeds, not bark. Then again I don't have any fruit trees.
-
I must have a different species of rabbit in my neighborhood than this guy has. I see them grazing on my property eating their favorite weeds, not bark. Then again I don't have any fruit trees.
Rabbits tend to eat pretty much everything. But a lot of it depends on what's available. If there's a lot of grass and plants they tend to stay off of trees and bushes but during the winter when everything else is covered in snow they eat tree bark, branches and everything. I've had countless of trees and bushes destroyed by those little pests. Nowadays I cover every tree and bush with some wire mesh to keep them out. They love apple trees and maples and blueberry bushes...
-
The main pests for my neighborhood, being solidly in the suburbs are squirrels, squirrels, squirrels, birds, and also squirrels. They just go after the food crops and are easy on the bushes and trees. So I look more into things like cayenne pepper sprays to keep them off the young plants.
-
I've got a bunch of squirrels too but I've never had any issue with them though... Sly however has gotten a few of them as has my water barrel.
-
There's another gardener in Australia that I like to watch, "Self Sufficient Me", and he does lots of work with raised beds. The advantage with those is that a framework can be added to the bed containers that allows for placing netting over plants that the birds want to devour, like blueberries. I would love to have some good berry bushes in my backyard here.

I'm jealous of your greenhouse, Charger.
-
Oh don't be. Very amateur stuff here...but I have to say though this year was a good year. Best harvest yet I'd say all in all. And I'm still collecting tomatoes in october! Think that has happened only once before!
And yes Tyr. I just dried another load today. This time some bit milder but still rather hot smaller ones. Ground them up too. Good for adding on sauces or on fish or steaks or what ever. For marinades and...well pretty much everything. :D
-
2022 season has been officially kicked open as I just put the seeds of Chilis in the dirt.
I went with all new varieties this year so it'll be an adventure of not knowing what they are like and how (if at all) they will grow.

Not in the greenhouse yet...still inside my house.

Even toastier! :D
-
We've started on our tomatoes for the season and have marigolds planted next to them. We're using a box with a mulch cover to help preserve moisture in the system, as the potted plants dried out too easily last year.
-
I've got tomatoes going as well...
First chilis and bell peppers have started to form fruits already! And still no chance to even get them out to the greenhouse! Bugger.
Put the seeds for Pumpkins and cucumbers down in the dirt today...which concludes the germination period...
-
Do you grow plants in patterns to benefit each other?
-
More like to benefit myself! :D
No...it's just for the time it takes them to grow...chilis and bell peppers take a long time to grow and mature...so if there's any hope of actually getting some harvest before the season is over you have to put them down very early over here...
Tomatoes grow bit faster so they need little over two months less growing time than Chilis....and cucumbers grow very fast so they need a month less than tomatoes...
Ofcourse it also means that there's bit more work with the chilis...changing them to bigger pots and such two maybe three times before they're moved into the greenhouse...tomatoes and cucumbers usually only need the one pot change.
This year spring is late so who knows...might be well into June before I can get any out into the greenhouse...
-
Sometimes I wish I had the inclination to grow things. All of my ancestors, from my grandparents on back to at least the early 1700s, were farmers of one sort or the other. My parents weren't, but they always kept a garden. Tomatoes, green beans, that kind of thing.
I look at a plant and it dies. I think about looking at a plant and random plants die.
-
^ Grow mint. It's a hardy plant that pretty much prospers anywhere with at least half sun. After that, try garlic. Just shove a clove into the ground and wait.
-

Unless there's an infestation of Vampires in your region don't bother as there really is no other use for garlic as it is totally unedible...

You must not be French... :D
-
No sir I am not...nothing against the french but their use of garlic is indeed scary to say the least!
Well finally it looks like the temp is rising a bit and no need to worry about below freezing nights anymore after tonight...so maybe later this week I can finally start moving stuff to the greenhouse...about bloody time.
-
It's getting up into summer temperatures here in Texas. About 3-4 weeks early for them, but not unexpected.
-
First chilis found their way to the greenhouse today...
As usual I have waaaaay to many plants so some will have to be thrown out as they won't fit...gotta just select the best ones and try to put atleast one of each variety.
-
We're making good progress with our tomato plant, it's already sporting blooms.
-
I look at a plant and it dies. I think about looking at a plant and random plants die.
Next Christmas I'll send you a Chia Pet.
-
Hahaha! ch-ch-ch-chia!
-
Some more chilis went in today...
Tomatoes and cucumbers go in after the rain season will end...when ever that'll be...
-
My wife planted a few annuals and they're already blooming nicely in the front and back planters. Tomatoes continue to look good.
-
And now the greenhouse is full again..as the final tomatoes went in...
Still have a place for one more chili but that's the special one and it's going in soon.

-
Hahah! More like
-
One of my tomato plants got withered by the heat, but the one next to it is bearing fruit that is on the verge of turning red.
-
Chili's and bell peppers are germinating nicely...
Just bought some tomatoes and cucumbers as well...
-
Still too early to plant in the open here, waiting until late March to get out from under freeze risks.
-
It'll be about 3 months before I can put anything outside here.
-
The 2024 season is growing up nicely!

Looks good!
I'd settle for a normal looking thumb, much less a green thumb. I look at a plant, and it withers and dies.
-
The missus has all manner of greenery inside the house, has been very successful with growing the house plants and she thought she had a killer thumb. Now it's green, but only indoors.
-
My thumb ain't that green either...but chilis I can do for the most part.
-
Tomatoes are in the dirt now! Then I'll still need to put down cucumbers..but that'll be about a month from now.
-
Tomatoes just came up. Bought a new plant light for them as well.
-
That was quick for the tomatoes!
-
Tomatoes can be rather quick sometimes...especially when germinating on a heated floor like I do.
Only one patch of seeds did not surface...so those must have been a bad patch...luckily they weren't the most expensive ones but still...
-
Well finally everything went into the greenhouse!
Chilis I took out earlier this week and yesterday were the cucumbers and today the tomatoes! The season is officially under way!
-
I'm considering doing some indoor farming of cherry/grape tomatoes.
-
There are some nice small varieties of cherry tomatoes that only grow about 20 inches high. Those would be ideal for indoor growing. Totem is one, I have those this year as well.
Everything is in the greenhouse now!

Did some yard work before my meeting and found that I now have an allergic reaction to the grass in my yard. Or something in my yard. Anyway, got a big rash on my feet and legs, took some allergy medication, and I'm going to be having a nice nap in a few more mins.

Things have grown up!
