Title: What are you playing at the moment?
Post by: Charger on February 21, 2018, 03:18:52 AM
Thread title speaks for itself. What games are you playing and with what device?

I only play with my PS4 anymore and have two games at the moment that I play. Battlefield 4 and COD WW2...very different games but I love 'em both.

Been playing BF4 for about 2,5 years now I am on top of some of Finlands top players lists...which is nice.

I do PC games exclusively, and I like to hit pause a lot, so I don't do multiplayer or competitive.

Paradox owns my soul: Victoria 2, EU4, HOI4, Cities:Skylines. Also Ticket to Ride. I've been playing the EU series since 2001 when my brother gave me his copy because it wasn't a RTS game like Starcraft. It's RTS in a much different way, and I love it.

I used to play chess too but then I realised I don't know how to play it and started feeling dumb so I stopped...Just didn't have the brain for it sadly... :(

Oh, I feel dumb playing chess lots of time, lol. I've memorized lots of positions, more than being truly "smart" at it.

I recommend trying out Chinese Chess. I saw it once in Beijing back in 2006, and I've been bitten by the bug. It starts pretty much in the mid-game and position is far more important than pieces. Play that, and you will see European Chess in a whole new way.

That seems like an interesting game that Chinese Chess actually...
Title: Re: What are you playing at the moment?
Post by: Zzzptm on February 23, 2018, 06:48:55 AM
My caution is that most of the material about learning how to play Chinese Chess is in... Chinese. I haven't checked the YouTube for instructions on how to play, so if those seem to be missing, maybe I can set up a "How to Play" video.

One of the best aspects of play is the practice of warning your opponent if he's about to make a disastrous move. The better player has a responsibility, it seems, to teach the lesser-skilled opponent. As such, it is a very friendly game and even if you lose, you learn something from your opponent, which builds a cooperative relationship instead of a competitive one.

So my daughter was playing Skyrim the other day and kept slashing the immortal NPC that doesn't fight back to improve her fighting skill.

I asked if that wasn't online bullying.

Then she mentioned how hard I'd laugh when I played The Sims and put all the bathrooms at the top of hills.

I dropped my argument.

You PS4 guys do you use the controller or keyboard and mouse?

Being playing with PC since I was 8 years old (in 1991!!) it was rather impossible to ever even consider using the controller...it just didn't work for me...who the hell invented that thing anyways...it's ridiculous! ;D Couldn't get any kind of a handle on it so I had to get Cronus Max dongle with Cronus Pro software on my computer so I can use my mouse and keyboard. Sadly using the dongle makes it impossible to use the mic but then again what the heck would I do with a mic anyways....?

The downside ofcourse is that I have to have my computer on all the time while playing...

Ryu ga Gotoku (Yakuza) Kiwami 2 for PS4. Want to buy Dynasty Warriors 9, but I'll need some funds for uni textbooks. So that may need to wait.

Charger, I'm exclusively controller for PS4. Wanted to buy an arcade stick last year (which is still technically a controller). I'll even use a PS3 controller for certain games on PC.

My kids all use the controllers for their Steam games. I tried a controller with Cities and had a laughably disastrous experience. My daughter said she should have recorded my reaction for a YouTube video. Comedy GOLD when you have me try to use a controller.

I have a Xbox 360 and about 50 games. I am just about to start playing Ghostbusters  - I hear excellent things about it so I wanted to give it a try.
And I LOVE the first Ghostbuster film, one of my all time favorite movies.

Back on Cities:Skylines because I had a HOI4 game go insane... I toppled Hitler, brought back the Kaiser, and tried to peacefully form a Central European bulwark against Communism with alliances with Hungary, Romania, and a monarchial Italy (I made moves to depose Mussolini, which succeeded). That peaceful stuff went off the rails when Italy picked a fight with Yugoslavia, which was being protected by Czechoslovakia, which had an alliance with Poland. Right after finishing off those three nations, Italy picked a fight with Albania, which resisted and joined the Allies. Had to fight off the French and British... in the middle of that, Russia attacked Finland, Finland joined the Allies, and even though it was German arms that conquered France and the Isle of Britain, Russia managed to grab about a third of the British Empire at the peace table! All they did was conquer Finland! Pfeh.

It's like talking swedish but with a severe lisp while eating a hot potatoe! Loved it! ;D

I love it.

If you like first person shooters of modern warfare this is the best.

It takes time to learn but it is worth it for sure.

The single player campaign though is HORRIBLE...just horrible.

But multiplayer is where it's at.

Did you buy PC or PS4?

I'm looking for a good football simulator. Let me spell out my requirements:

1. American football. Sorry if I had any confusion in my first line.

2. I don't have good reflexes, so I don't mess around in player mode, trying to toss passes or run routes. I need all the action on the field to be handled by the AI.

3. I want to be able to design and call the plays. Coaching, that is where it's at.

4. I also want to run the front office and handle drafting and trades and salary cap messes.

Back in 1998, I played tons of Front Page Sports and loved that game back then. I've seen a few games here and there claiming to be its successor, but I'm not sure which one to commit to. Any ideas here?

Just bought a PS3 because of all the fucking great games it has in it's library. Got a Super Slim Edition with a 250 GB HD.
I thought that all I needed from that generation was the Xbox 360 - but the PS3 has some amazing game exclusives.
Bought Uncharted and Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 3, and both are just a true works of art on the PS3.

Although I have a few different sport games for various systems I usually only buy them if they are dirt cheap. I do not have any Football games but I always hear that the Madden series is the best of that genre.

Picked up Doom and The Last Of Us as well, playing the multiplayer, Doom is the last one to try.. I'm sure these are good games, it's just they're uninteresting to me play and gamer A.D.D. kicked in when I tried them.

I like both of these new Battlefonts but as you said they are not as special as the PS2 games. The first Battefront sold millions of copies but was a critical disaster. The second one is a bit more improved and you also get a campaign single player in the new one as well.

I only paid 8 bucks for BF1 - I thought for that price - why not. It seems that EA keeps dropping the ball on the Battlefield franchise.

I was wondering about Battlefield V, and I just recently picked up a second hand copy of Battlefield 1 - yet to try it though.
I will keep an eye out for the other Call Of Duty games.

Ouch. BF1 is abysmal. I hope you didn't pay much....

COD WW2 is great too. Been enjoying it a lot. Although the campaign isn't nearly as good as on MW games...

I only paid 8 bucks for BF1 - I thought for that price - why not. It seems that EA keeps dropping the ball on the Battlefield franchise.

I paid 10€ for the revolution pack of BF1... Played it about 5 times then abandoned it.

I agree. They changed it too much and made it into an infantry game which is horrible with such large maps and so many players. It is utter chaos...and adding the fact that the movement is so sluggish and slow...it is just horrible. BF4 is the last good Battlefield game.

Well I bought some games for Christmas presents to myself  :wootwoot: Horizon Zero Dawn and Bloodborne for the PS4, And Gran Turismo 5 for the PS3. I also bought a copy of Brutal Legend for the Xbox 360, a game I  have wanted for some time and finally came across a copy in good condition and relatively cheap.

Well my Xbox Gold membership has expired and there is so few people playing online that I do not think I will renew it. I was enjoying playing Titanfall but I just bought number 2 for the PS4 so I will be moving on to that.

Just about to start a game of Need For Speed Hot Pursuit for the Xbox 360, should be fun.

Playing the Division on PS4 and loving every minute of it. It has the best graphics that I have seen so far in a game. Just beautiful and the development team put so much work into every detail. If you go on YouTube you can see some game play and witness for yourself the incredible graphics. The Division was one of the main reasons I bought a PS4 Pro. I had to play this game and in March the sequel is coming out and though I usually do not buy triple A games on release day this time I am going to make an exception.

I know the writing is up for a Nebula "Game Writing" award or some such. I guess that's a new category for the Nebulas. Used to be, winning a Nebula was a big deal. Not sure what cache that award carries nowadays.

It would be interesting to hear someone's thoughts of a play-through who knows a bunch about Chaucer.

I have been playing Division 2 Beta with my good friend and neighbor. There are definitely some bugs in the game but I think it will be ready on release date which is the 15th of this month.

I have been playing Forza Motorsport 6 that was given out to Xbox Gold members free a few months ago. The graphics on this racing game are impeccable. The game play is easy to pick up even for a beginner, but there is a learning curve to be mastered as well. If you own an Xbox One you owe it to yourself to check out the Forza franchise.

I got some great C&C stories... I was working at Microsoft, supporting Windows 95 in late '95 up to the summer of '96. We were all temps and we all had to do weekend support. Call volume was low, so we were kinda allowed to play games while managers looked the other way. Our work PCs were dogs, but our PCs for replicating customer issues were all awesome rigs for the day - actual P100s with CD-ROM drives! DUDE!

With a quickness, we were getting C&C and loading it on the "breakme" PC. If we had to take a call, we had to forfeit the game. The Law of the Jungle. But volumes were low, so we could get a good conclusion to just about any 4x4 pick-up game. Best part was how GDI and Nod catered to different strategies. I like to build tall, so I favored GDI. If I had a good start, I had TONS of guard towers to shred any bike rush coming at me. If not, well, that's the problem of not having a good start, isn't it?

After that job, I got Warcraft II, another awesome classic of the mid-90s. Had another job with lots of down time and monitors not immediately visible from the doorway, so, yeah, we played that one, too. Good times.

Once I got out of temp jobs and was a proper full-time employee, I stopped playing games at work... but C&C has a warm spot for me. I'm adding it to my wishlist on Steam.

Age Of Empires was never among my favourites...but then again I didn't play it all that much either(had I played more I think my opinion would be different now) but Warcraft II...man...that got a lot of hours before C&C.

I never got to play multiplayer with C&C or Red Alert but I did enjoy building my own maps in RA and playing the skrismish maps just as much as I enjoyed playing the campaign...so that game lasted a long time for me even after I had already completed the campaign portion.

Doing lots of C:S and uploading videos for them.

In between, I keep starting EU4 games and getting pissed off at the stupid AI or how the current "National Goals" system pretty much forces a wide strategy instead of a tall one. So that's probably going to make me go back to Vicky 2, which rewards tall playing pretty regularly, once you're wide enough to be a Great Power. :D

Yup quite a lot of assfootage there.

As glitching goes this was among the worst betas I've played in a long time.

It had good moments too and the choppering was otherwise quite fun...but there are issues and considering the game should launch in just over a month...I don't know...doesn't look very good.

But then again...there hasn't been a finished and working Battlefield release since BF3 so...it's nothing new really.

Already finished about a fifth of the game and enjoying every minute of it.

It's a grand strategy simulation of the Victorian Era and a little bit more on each end, 1836-1936.

Unlike other grand strategy simulations, it's not about painting the entire map in the color of one's nation - it encourages "taller" gameplay as opposed to "wide", conquer-everything gameplay.

EPIC GRAVEDIG

My current games list:

1. Baldur's Gate 3 - OH WOW THIS IS AN AMAZING GAME and I will be eager for the release version coming out later this week.

2. American Truck Simulator - Texas just got new content and Oklahoma is coming out later in the week. Have to say it's loads of fun, tooling around in my home state and seeing just how well the SCS team has captured the essence of Texas driving.

3. Old World - the gamers have been sleeping on this solid masterpiece of a 4X game. Tutorials are great and I have been playing a lot of this gem of late. I started because of some major mod issues after recent content releases in other games I've been playing and I'm glad I got into it.

4. Victoria 3 - now that the modding dust has settled, this one's fun to get into again.

5. Cities: Skylines - I do this instead of painting with watercolors. :D

6. Divinity Original Sin 2 - Was playing this until I bought BG3 from the same studio. I'm doing some completionist type runs so I can see plot lines I missed before. Highly entertaining game and was the main ad for BG3 in my experience.

7. Master of Orion 2 - Picked it up for cheap on Steam and got the 1.50 fan patch that uses a different launcher... it's a true classic, in every sense of the word. Original release turns 30 and this game is 27 years old - and it still holds up, in my opinion. It's straightforward and loads of beer 'n' pretzels fun.

For the first time in a coon's age, I'm going to carve time out for a game. I preordered Baldur's Gate 3, have my key, have it downloaded, just waiting for go-live. I had played the pre-release a while back and what a stunningly well done piece of work. Looking forward to the real thing. Looks like me and Z will be hitting it August 3rd!

Awwwwwwwwwww yeah!

My first run-through, I managed to get truly good and massacred by underestimating a trap setup. From now on, when I see a D20 above my character's head, I plan to not open any boxes until after I've plugged up any odd, fireball-sized holes in the room...

Just read that Larian recommends removing all save games and uninstalling early release BG3 prior to the release version, so as not to have any possible code glitches. I will do that now so I'll be ready on the morrow!

My wife got into it as well. It is fun times!

I'm doing a run as a druid, my wife is going in as a ranger, and I just started a separate bard run.

I'm barely into the bard run and already enjoying the differences in that character class, given the way I like to play a conversational/negotiating kind of character.

Also, I found out the hard way that there are some doors you DO NOT want the element of surprise from opening suddenly... not all surprises are good ones in BG3! They are all fun ones from a game perspective, though. :D

Just a short bit into BG3 at this point - interesting to see the small changes they made from the pre-release. Now, if I could just pop a long-lasting flying potion, I'd leave the losers to their collective fate and fly to Baldur's Gate for some proper R&R.

Read that a speedrunner found a way to "win" the game in about 10 mins. It's very cheesy and something of a Samson act in how The Big Bad is dispatched, but it's a legit ending.

Myself, I'm starting over with an eye to maximizing my party's ranged damage per turn. I'll still want a tank in there, I imagine, but the Rogue, Ranger, and Sorcerer seem to be massive units for long-distance mayhem. I just got the Withers guy to my camp so I'm gonna do a bit of re-speccing for my companions... :D

Still working through BG3. I'm in Act 2 and It's. Just. Incredible.

Got some buddies that I watch do a multiplayer run and there are issues with that, how the cameras swing around kinda crazy and it seems like actions get dropped. It may be due to them using controllers instead of keyboard + mouse, but since I can get some camera wonkiness in solo play, I'm thinking the game requires we take time to sort things - it's not a real-time shooter, so at least we do have a luxury of time.

But the camera issues were ones I dealt with in DOS2DE, so I can dance around those.

I'll just throw this out there since it doesn't seem anyone here is playing BG3 except you and I. I'm still slightly less than half-way through Act 1, and this has to do with the Blighted Village.

: show

I like to kill the ogres rather than saving them for help fighting later on.

In the early-access version, the headgear the ogres dropped raised INT to 18, now it raises INT to 17. My character has an INT of 8, so he's gone from playing with his own drool to discussing the finer points of The Weave with Gale.

But if he'd had that one extra point...man...could have removed the parasite all by himself LOL

Title: Re: What are you playing at the moment?
Post by: Zzzptm on August 30, 2023, 12:01:31 PM
^ That's why it don't go to 18. :smug:

: show
I also whack the ogres. I need XP and INT. Soon as I get the Headband of Brains, I re-spec my character to INT 8 on his own and boost up the other skills. Does this mean I pass on other cool hats? Yes. Do I regret that choice? Not at all.

I'm almost done with Act 2 in my run and I'm already thinking about my next run-through where I use a mod to increase experience-gathering speed and to allow up to level 20. It will require that I go with the mid-level of difficulty or tactical mode because the explorer mode won't allow for multiclassing. BUT... if I have a Rogue/Ranger build getting all kinds of ranged bonuses from subclasses... OH MYYYY! :smug:

PROTIP: Ranged combat is awesome in this game. Getting the whole crew to hide and park outside the enemy's range of visibility and enter combat one at a time is priceless. There are a few enemies where there's still a struggle after the second round, but by keeping things fast and deadly with other encounters, I've got plenty of dry HP to deal with those bosses and their bossery.

ANOTHER PROTIP: Keep those unique items handy. If not on your person, then with a party member or in the big trunk back at camp. Beats having to go back to all the traders to figure out which one you pawned the McGuffin to... only to discover it was the one that's not there anymore! AGGGGHHH!

Not a spoiler, so no spoiler tags... the boss fight cutscenes are way cool, but the plot points that come out of them are the literary side of the thing that make it such a wonderful part of BG3. The dungeonmastering makes this the best choose-your-own-adventure I've ever done. Larian's telling a fantastic story.

In the playthrough I'm doing with my wife, I'm relishing the amazing views I saw before in my personal playthrough. And the story unfolds just as pleasingly on a re-read. How many longswords up do I give this game? 10 out of 10.

***

Now, for the tough love side... I like to do all the side quests. ALL of them. I'm a completist. I can never do a speed run, I still gotta open them chests and boxes and stuff. That being said, when I saw that I was leaving levels on the table after maxing out at 12 at what has turned out to be very early in Act 3, I couldn't handle that. I am now using a mod that allows up to level 20 and have left storytelling mode in my rear-view mirror and am on explorer so I can multiclass. Just be sure to have the 12th level in any one class be the last level you take, and the game doesn't break down and wonder what the blazes is going on. I have my justifications, but the biggest one is if I can qualify for level 13, I want level 13 please and thank you. :D

There be some buggy quests in Act 3 of BG3, so I will skip them and pretend all went well as I walk whistling past the graveyard, so to speak...

EDIT: To be honest, I checked out forums and reddits to see if they were bugged or not and even though some of them had workarounds, the bonuses at the end showed that the juice wasn't worth the squeeze in terms of payout. They're not for any main characters, so that's fine with me.
Title: Re: What are you playing at the moment?

Finished BG3, game of the year. There will be patches for the buggy bits and none of them were on main character story lines. I did all the side quests bar one that was an Act 3 bug and enjoyed some cracking storytelling. The final boss fight delivers a most fitting climax. So much so that the wrap-up seems hurried by comparison. But I let my imagination work with that and come up with the final word on the matter.

Great combat, great characters, great loot. Everything needed for it to be game of the year and an instant legend.

I have been waiting for Starfield since it was announced back in 2018.
I must say that I am very underwhelmed and find the game somewhat boring in parts
I am very glad that I did not drop 90 dollars for it and I am playing on Gamepass.

I think that the game has tremendous potential and hopefully over time it will be improved

Yeah, Starfield is a game that has lots of promise... it's what a game in development hell looks like.

Victoria 3 is coming out with the 1.5 patch/upgrade in a few more weeks, and I'm interested in what that offers. It's coming up on a year since its release and I'm glad to see it not get abandoned, but having its problems worked on.

American Truck Simulator Oklahoma - I just finished a World of Trucks goal to deliver shipments to each of the 10 cities in Oklahoma in the expansion, and I had a lovely time driving around. I need to do the run up through Beavers' Bend, though, as that's not on the direct path to anywhere and is one of the prettiest spots I've been through in real-world driving.

For the BG3 players, I have a spoiler-y question that's not really answered directly anywhere... read after you've gone through a number of dialogues with The Emperor in Act 3:

: show
Is The Emperor responsible for the tadpoling that happened to the main characters? He picks out some deeply flawed people that all have a point of leverage and then uses them for his ends. He definitely is an ends justify the means type of dude. Knowing that The Dark Urge was intended to be the main player character underlines that more. Given that, in the opening, there are some mind flayers out of commission as an illithid that looks very much like The Emperor approaches us in a POV shot, I'm thinking that even if The Emperor didn't do it directly, he had localized control of the nautiloid that retrieved the Astral Prism and killed off any other illithid that got in his way.
Title: Re: What are you playing at the moment?
Post by: Vyn on September 21, 2023, 03:03:27 PM
I have finished BG3 - agree with your earlier comment about game of the year, it was a well-executed, awesome storyline.

As far as your Q:
: show

I don't believe Emp is responsible. I think that Tav and the rest of the party were scooped up and tadpole-ized just like the rest, and then Emperor stepped in and chose the folks it wanted to protect with the goal, of course, being to counter the Absolute. I lean towards that narrative due to the astral tadpole - if Emperor was involved in the beginning, why not have given everyone - that - tadpole instead of the plain-jane tadpoles? Emperor was able to shield the characters from the tadpole's hijacking by the Absolute, as well as the traditional ceramorphasis role those tadpoles had, but did not insert the tadpole either directly or indirectly.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Title: Re: What are you playing at the moment?

The use of the SPOILER tag continues... :D

: show
Went back to the start and disguised myself and went on an Act One speak with the dead spree... there's a mind flayer in the Goblin Camp that is the one we recognize as the illithid that was plying the tadpoles on the nautiloid. But I've read enough Philip K. Dick to ask if the narrator is gaslighting me...

1. Mind flayers mess with minds, right? How do I know that The Emperor isn't pinning the blame on the only other mind flayer I encounter outside the crash site in Act One so that I'm diverted from what he did?
2. Mind flayers have a "hive mind" but still show some individuality, to varying degrees. Is it possible for a locally strong mind flayer (The Emperor) takes over the operation on the nautiloid and kills off those that get in his way so that he has smooth runnings with the illithids that go hive with his mind. So he's not conspiring to get at us specifically, but takes us as part of his aspirations. We're what's left after the Goblins/cultists haul off survivors and kill them off.
3. The side plot of Astarion and the vampires got me to wonder if there wasn't some kind of hierarchy in The Emperor's "special brew" tadpoles. He likes to have insurance to cover his schemes, having us be slave minds to his makes for a darn good insurance, should he need it.
4. The Emperor is careful. Even though The Absolute is aware of his strategy, it's still the one he sticks with - best strategy will still work even if the opponent is aware of it. He knows what he can do and, as such, needs the Netherstones to get the job done. And that Orpheus brain, over there. If you're not forthcoming, then he has zero confidence in your skillz and goes with The Absolute, presumably to await another aeon in which he can grab for power.
5. The Emperor also lies. "I only eat criminal brains" - uh, what about my man Orpheus over there? "I will not let you turn into a mind flayer" - uh, what's that astral tadpole in your hand, there, buddy?
6. But The Emperor also has limited ambitions - he doesn't want to be running everything, just to be the power behind the throne. Is the world a better place with a willful mind flayer running a weapons ring behind the scenes? Mmmmaaaayyyybeeee it is...?

Well looks like I got my new more gaming oriented computer up and running...just need to finish some installations as all seems to be finally working with it so time for me to log back into the world of PC gaming.

First thing to try I believe will be this:

It's been getting some great reviews on playablity. Most people saying this plays like the good old battlefield 4 used to. The graphics are what they are but if the gaming is good the graphics to me are non important.

The new Battlefield 2042 is in a spot where it starts to be nerfed to death so I'm starting to lose interest. Need something else to try.

Also will be getting Modern Warfare 2 although that wasn't reportedly nearly as good as MW was few years ago.

On point comment with the gaming being good - get that done right, and we can forgive graphics resolution quality. Look at Minecraft and Stardew Valley - hugely popular because the *game* underneath is good. Graphics are last-century on both those titles, but who cares? :D

Meanwhile, I'm looking at Cities: Skylines 2 coming out in a month. It got announced with amazing-looking graphics... that were not actual gameplay. The actual gameplay looks about the same as CS1. Difference being that somehow, to get those same-as-the-old-boss graphics, one now needs a massive 11GB RTX card! I'm not going to dive into that game with eagerness. I will likely buy it because I have a channel that does CS material, but I am ready to be disappointed by it.

It's not about building and growth, it's about killing anyone that threatens the stability of the realm, if you want to be a ruler that provides stability and relative peace. That "mindless wander", though, does appeal to a gamer like me who likes to stretch back and take it easy. I  think that yes there is a  tedious nature and a lack of content compared to some triple a games.
I do enjoy just wandering around in open world games and this game is a  true work of art.
I also think that the fact they were able to get the game to perform so smoothly on the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One was genuinely great

I've always preferred games that you have a rather linear plot (with different maps and missions) which guarantees action as opposed to open world games. I played another one of these open world games back in the day called Farcry (which I think was among the first ones) and while it was kind of fun at first it got tedious really fast...

The graphic on these games however is indeed quite spectacular quite often.
