Taking a little vacation

Visiting family in Little Rock, Arkansas this week. Yesterday, we made a day trip to Memphis to see Sun Records and Stax Records museums.

WOW

This was my second time to go to Sun, but it was just as sweet as the first. What impresses me the most about the facility is the preservation of the old radio soundboard and the state of the recording studio. It really is a touch magical in those places.

Stax Records is more of a traditional museum, with great visual and audio exhibits along the way. The very end has a walk-through the studio space (a converted movie theater that has a sloping floor that really accentuated the bass sound) and a lush exhibit for Isaac Hayes' massive Cadillac. It's the longer stay of the two museums - Sun is a 40-minute tour on the half-hour through the day, Stax is a 20-minute intro film and then a self-guided tour through all the exhibits. I can stand to go back to Stax, but I think I'll have to do it alone, as the rest of my party was done with the museum long before I was.

We had lunch at Central BBQ between the two museums for an awesome day of Memphis rock and soul.

There's definitely a difference in road quality when one crosses the state line.

It's a whole lot like East Texas. A whoooooooooooooooooooooooole lot like East Texas, so it is what it is. And that means there's some good eatin' here.

Arkansas is one of the few states I know very little about. Part from the fact that I have bootleg of a DIO show recorded in Little Rock back in 1994 and the crowd that night was suberb!

It's definitely in low-impact mode right now. Just hitting resale shops for shirts and knick-knacks. Found a money clip for $2 that I'm giving to my daughter because she loves the John Mulaney bit.

And it comes with a fake $20 in it, for added savings!
