^^^Yep, it’s the outer plastic sleeve that the actual album slips into. It’s seems to be more a chance of happening if the record inside is not protected also by an inner lyrics and credits sleeve. So if it’s just the record inside a paper or poly anti static sleeves inside the album sleeve it offers less protection of it happening. A gatefold album with paper inners or lyrics sleeves offers very solid protection from it occurring.

Also not storing your albums packed too tightly together is a better preventive measure from it happening as well.

Exactly, you shouldn't over tighten the albums but just enough to prevent the covers from distorting by not being close enough to each other and that's it. We see too often second hand albums with the cover marked on the outside by the vinyl inside, way too compressed !!
Currently, I don't have enough place in my closet, so I stored my last purchases against a wall in the shade, not without forgetting to put a piece of cardboard in front of the first so that the visible pocket was not altered by daylight.

Last year I watched the unboxing video of Triptykon 's live album "Requiem". I was shocked to see the guy handling the interior hardware with such little delicacy !
Another for a Venom box set with the famous poster from the 7 dates of Hell tour: the guy put everything he showed on the grass in his garden. just unbelievable!

Hmmm...
I've got my vinyls just stacked up in a closet....Might have to rethink that then...and maybe get those plastic sleeves then as well..

Definitely store them not on top of each other, that's where compression will be worst, over time.

@Jack:

I don't upload images to this forum, I upload them elsewhere and then copy the link. Once I have the link, I click the "insert image" button and paste the link between the tags. To resize an image, I add "width=" inside the first img tag and specify a number (usually 400, sometimes more). It's amazingly difficult to explain this in writing, it makes it sound like a ten minute process lol.

So, here's a picture showing the insert image tag I mentioned:

Then I get the link to the picture (in this case, the link is https://www.ddever.net/img/tunes/step_two.png).

Then I click the insert image button and my message then looks like this:

I then paste my image link between the two image tags so it looks like

Code: [Select]
[img]https://www.ddever.net/img/tunes/step_two.png[/img]

Then I add the width=400 (or 600 in this case) to the first img tag and it looks like this:

Code: [Select]
[img width=600]https://www.ddever.net/img/tunes/step_two.png[/img]

That's how I do it, anyway.

------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding album sleeves, yeah, pvc isn't good. When I bought Judas Priest's Nostradamus it came in a box with each disk stored in a pvc sleeve. The records are fogged all to hell and back from it.

I've been using polyethylene sleeves for a long time. Originally not because I knew they were better, but because I liked the way they felt. Because I'm weird, I guess lol.

@Vyn That’s how I usually do it. I use the insert image icon and paste the photobucket image link I’ve copied, but I’ve never added width. I might try it and see if it works for me. I always do it from my iPad anyway so posting photos is never a problem.

Re: Nostradamus - Holy shit! Mine is still sealed in the box. I just looked up discogs to get some pictures up to see if they were packaged all the same and noticed in the notes someone had added this:

“A considerable number of new vinyl copies sold in the past few years, after being stored for years in a warehouse, have been damaged due to a chemical reaction between the vinyl record and the PVC sleeves they are packaged in. Buyers across the internet are complaining about this, for example.
"Titled "Worst Vinyl Issue Yet" - But when mine arrived they used thick PVC sleeves for the records. All have done what vinyl does when in contact with other vinyl. FUSED. With that telltale vinegar smell when plastics are gassing. All 3 albums have a coating from their sleeves now and the surface noise is as loud as the music. Pure Genius at the packing plant". (C) Yamahama, 2014”

Well I guess mine are completely fucked then. I wonder if it’s worth even opening and checking given they’ll probably be completely destroyed. That way, when my time comes, it can be sold sealed being totally oblivious to the situation.

And just to follow up on Nostradamus. Just found this thread about the issue on the Steve Hoffman forums https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/judas-priest-nostradamus-lp-packaging-issue.389584/

Yeah, my wife, who gives no fucks about records, got to listen to me rant when I opened that Priest box set and discovered it was hosed. I still shake my head in disbelief that the packaging folks thought it was a good idea.

It sucks that what you once thought was a gem is probably just a banana fritter filled with shit lol. I feel your pain man.

I honestly don’t see the point in opening it just because I’m inquisitive and it will only confirm the the inevitable pain anyway...but I can be a sucker for punishment
