Bleeding Steel

In near future a police officer is nearly killed when facing off a Bioroid, a man with a mechanical heart and superior healing abilities while trying to protect the inventor of the technology. 15 years later he tries to protect his daughter who begins to have strange dreams about her past.

A rather strange Hong Kong action movie starring the one and only Jackie Chan.

The plot is bit all over the place and it's bit hard to follow but Jackie still does a great job with the fight scenes that are as good as anything he did 20 years ago.

I think this tries to ride the Marvel movie wave but doesn't really catch it. It's a fun little movie but nothing more.

THE BLUFF

A former pirate queen is living a quiet life on a caribbean island with her new family but once her husband is captured by her old pirate partner who she betrayed and comes looking for her and the gold she stole, she has to find a way to fight an entire crew of vicious pirates lead by brutal captain Fransisco Connor to keep her family safe.

Priyanka Chopra does a fair job with the lead and she does put herself through a lot but her Rambo act doesn't quite ring true. However Karl Urban as Captain Connor oozes evil and brutality and he does so with great presense and conviction. Temuera Morrison does another fine role as the first mate, he's been getting a lot roles lately and I do enjoy his work...this is no exeption.

The movie is delightfully brutal, which is not something you'd automatically expect these days especially from an Amazon Prime production. The ending fight has maybe little too many similarities to Rambo: Last Blood, but that can be forgiven.

All in all a very entertaining action movie based on a subject matter there aren't that many movies based upon..part from Pirates Of The Caribbean which are of a different genre all together.

Goodland (2018)

In the small out-of-the-way town of Goodland, a stranger arrives the same day a body is discovered.  So the local sheriff tries to piece together this strange coincidence.

An interesting little story that kept me watching, despite the fact that there was only a moderate amount of action and no recognizable actors in the film.  9/10

AFTERBURN

Few years after a massive solar flare has destroyed most of the electronics and thus collapsing the civization a treasure hunter named Jake is hired by the new king of England to find Mona Lisa from now Russian madman controlled France. Over there he is brought into a fight that is not his but one he cannot ignore.

Dave Bautista handles the lead very well and is accompanied by Samuel L Jackson as King August and the beautiful Olga Kurylenko as the french resistance fighter Drea. Norwegian actor Kristofer Hivju does a great job as the ultra bad guy General Volkov.

The action is fast and furious and surprisingly brutal but there's enough humor to lighten things up when needed. The post apocalyptic look is well created as well with use of set pieces more than CGI which is commendable.

I didn't have high expectations for this one based on the reviews but I was very pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it immensly. One of the best new movies I've seen in the past year or so.

Irrational Man (2015)

On a small town college campus, a philosophy professor (Joaquin Phoenix) who is unhappy and somewhat depressed finds a new purpose to his life when he enters into a relationship with an admiring student (Emma Stone).

This fine story by Woody Allen, is not going to go as you expect, and definitely worth a watch.  9/10

I'm sure movie fans remember Kelly's Heroes.
Well here is a great clip taken during the making of the film.

WORLDBREAKER

After a strange fissure released strange deadly creatures on the world a father must train his daughter on a deserted island to survive and to fight. But things go wrong when a mysterious young girl arrives.

Luke Evans and Billie Boullet do decent enough job and Milla Jovovich pretty much only appears in the beginning and the very end...also that's pretty much where the action and the creatures are...rest of the movie is rather...well boring to be honest. Nothing really happens and the creatures are nowhere to be seen.

The potential here is huge. The creatures look pretty nice and there could be great mythology built here but no...none of that. Just Father and Daughter talking and running in the woods for most of the time.

Great premise totally wasted.

Not worthy of the 90 minutes. 1 star for the creatures 1 star for Milla...that's it.

Gone in the Night (2022)

After arriving at a remote cabin, a woman (Winona Ryder) and her boyfriend find a mysterious younger couple already there.  It appears the rental has been double-booked.  They decide to share the cabin with these strangers until the next morning, but her boyfriend disappears with the young girl.  Upon trying to find an explanation for their sudden breakup, it turns out that the truth is far stranger than she could have imagined.

One of the best mysteries I have seen in a long time.  9/10

DEEPWATER HORIZON

A routine day at an oil exploration rig turns into a nightmare when cut corners and pressures from the company executives causes a massive fire and explosion leaving the workers fighting for their lives while trying to get off the rig.

Based on the real events that took place in 2010 on a rig of the same name.

Director Peter Berg and actor Mark Wahlberg continue their "based on real events" series that started with Lone Survivor.

Berg knows how to direct small scale action and drama really really well. The set pieces too are just incredible, they actually built a near scale replica of the rig! So no CGI shots here, which is great to see.

The press made this out to be only a environmental disaster but real people died on the rig and regular people became heroes and it's those that Berg lifts up in the movie.

A really entertaining disaster movie which is only elevated by the fact that it's based on actual events and people.

Backstabbing for Beginners (2018)

An idealistic young employee (Theo James) at the U.N. stumbles upon a conspiracy involving Iraq's oil reserves which may involve his own boss (Ben Kingsley).

Based on the real-life corruption scandal of the UN Oil-for-Food Program, this film does a good job at showing how corruption can exist at the highest levels.  9/10

I agree! I think Mark has done more good than bad movies over the years. He's got that talent of doing both serious roles and comedic roles...sometimes even in the same movie!
