The comedians often make for really chilling villains. It's basically them delivering shock material and going for unfunny gasps of horror instead of laughs.

A comedy set in a world where no one has ever lied, until a writer seizes the opportunity for personal gain.  A number of fine comedians in this film and plenty of good laughs. 8.5/10

Watched House of Gucci the other night. It is a slow-burning love story, less about the business machinations and more about the love affair that blossomed and turned rotten. It has much more in common with Marriage Story than it does with The Godfather. Even though I was expecting a business struggle saga, I stayed for the love story because Adam Driver and Lady Gaga were so compelling and the supporting cast kept me going.

Although, I must say, the story of a rich family that falls on hard times with a prominently bald family member made me want to watch Arrested Development, which I've just started up on.

A veteran Vegas magician tries to revive his career after his longtime partner quits, he gets fired from his casino act, and an edgy new "street magician" steals his thunder.  Funny stuff. 8/10

Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City

A reboot of the video game to film franchise, sees us return to the start before the events of the Spencer Mansion are fully realised. Paul WS Anderson has given up the directing but he is a producer.  Apparently Capcom provided the floor plans of the Spencer Mansion to help out. The film stars Kaya Scodelario (I know her from the Maze Runner films and the most recent Pirates of the Caribbean) as Claire Redfield. Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, also making an appearance are the characters Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong and Jill Valentine.

Essentially, the Redfield's as kids were in an orphanage where the Spencer Mansion is and were experimented on before they escaped. Claire returns to find answers... just as things kick off.

I didn't find it very scary, the plot was a little vague but I suppose that's the nature of the franchise you don't really find out stuff straight away. Pretty much by the numbers Resident Evil, not bad but I prefer the better films from the Milla Jovovich era. 6/10 (+1 as it does have the lovely Kaya afterall!!)

Racoon City!

I just finished watching Tmavomodrý svět yesterday. English version is called Dark Blue World. It has a rather mundane plot, and in typical Czech movie fashion doesn't have a happy ending. But it is well acted, the cinematography is well done, and I was drawn in to it.

Watched a couple of DVDs recently, Belfast and Top Gun

Belfast
The semi-autobiographical story of Kenneth Branagh's childhood in Northern Ireland at the height  of the troubles, stars Jude Hill, Jamie Dorman, Ciaran Hinds, Caitríona Balfe and Judi Dench.

Filmed in Black and White it follows the turmoil the family go through where the father works away in England and when he's home the local militia try to persuade him to defend the community from the catholic gangs. The story follows Buddy (9 year old Jude Hill) from school to his interactions with friends, his mother, and grand parents.

It's an enjoyable film and while it doesn't shirk away from the violence and general nastiness of the time, it is mainly in the background as Buddy doesn't really understand. 7/10

Top Gun

I thought I would watch this as the new film (Top Gun: Maverick) is out later this month. I've never actually seen the original, just never got round to it! It stars Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Tim Robbins, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and Tom Skerritt.

The best fighter pilots in the US Navy, go on a course to become the elite, or Top Guns. The film follows the training, and how Maverick rubs the bosses the wrong way with his daredevil attitude.

It's a bit dated now, but it is a film of the 80s so the attitudes are a little unrealistic. What makes the film is the flying sequences which gives the film some excitement and tension. 7/10

I haven't seen Top Gun since the mid 90s...it kind of felt cool for a kid at the time but I've seen a clip or two as it's been on tv quite a few times and it does look very very dated now...

I've also not seen The Shining, Titanic, and a number of other movies that I nevertheless know a number of scenes or catchphrases that came from them.

If your girlfiend gets frightened even a little bit by scary movies, then she will be holding on to you a lot during BWP.  I don't get scared all that much, but that one was pretty effective.  >:D

I’ve never watched a Harry Potter movie and don’t intend to.

@Kilo, how has such a movie buff like you never watched Raging Bull? I’m staggered and bewildered  :twitch:

Top Gun Maverick is getting rave reviews
