Saturday Night Sci-Fi

A factory worker begins to suspect that he is a spy after visiting Rekall - a company that provides its clients with implanted fake memories of a life they would like to have led.  More than enough action for my taste.  Have to admit, it was the 2 gorgeous women that kept me watching.  :)  6/10

I finally watched it last night.
Not that bad despite the ultra-negative reviews read here and there at the release of the movie. That's why I never paid attention to it. Obviously, I had also seen Paul Verhoeven's film with Arnold when it was released in 1990.
It seems that this new one  is closer to the news of Philip K. Dick. Although the comparison with the cult film is inevitable, the fact remains that the result is different from the film of 1990. I must admit that I enjoyed it maybe because I started off with a bit of a preconceived idea. negative. Colin Farrell does a good job and the story brings something else. Ok, it's her husband who directed the movie but Kate Beckinsale is incredibly beautiful. No doubt special effects earned her a few more points but my god, what a pleasure to contemplate this magnificent woman ...

We watched the amazing Spirited Away this last Friday, one of Hiyao Miyazaki's best films. Given that all of his films are pretty much epics, that's high praise indeed. The story has a simplicity in Sen's journey to rediscover herself that any child can identify with. Simultaneously, the lack of binary good/evil in the characters lends complexity all along that simple path, to give anyone ample material to analyze and consider.

I watched Doctor Sleep on rental today. The sequel to classic Stephen King horror film The Shining set almost 40 years later.

It follows Dan who was the 5 year old boy in the first film who has now grown up to be a 40-something recovering alcoholic haunted by the ghosts from his past. There is a tribe of travellers (lead by Rose) who roam the country seeking out people who also have the shining talent, and either converting them or killing them as they can feed on the shining within them which is released as they die. The travellers use this to extend their lives to become almost immortal. Add to this a young girl (Abra) who's talent dwarfs that of others who becomes at first a target and then a threat to the travellers when she learns from Dan how best to use her talent.

The film stars Ewan McGregor as Dan, the gorgeous Rebecca Ferguson as Rose and little known Kyliegh Curren as Abra. It's an okay film, I enjoyed it for the most part. It's not very scary, but they do return to the Overlook Hotel and we meet up with some old friends. It's not The Shining but it's not terrible either. But why the title Doctor Sleep? I have no idea, there is one minor character who can induce sleep by suggestion... but that is it! 7/10

I know, and I'm wondering if the minor character in the film had a bigger role in the book. But I'll check out the Trivia on IMDb to see if it casts any light on the title.

Ok I think I understand the Doctor Sleep reference, but even then it's not clear. In the film Danny works nights at a clinic for the terminally ill. In that clinic there is a cat that can sense when a patient is about to die and goes and stays with them until they pass (based on a genuine cat with a similar gift). Danny picks up on this and also stays with the patient giving kind words and so on until theu pass. I think this death is the "sleep" referred to in the title even though it is a small part of the film.

I started watching Bill & Ted Face the Music yesterday. I switched it off after about 30 minutes... it really doesn't work in the 2020s the way it did in the 1990s. I had seen a couple of reviews which said if you liked the original films you'll like this one. I did like the originals (although I think I preferred Waynes World), but I didn't like this. While the chracters and silliness are the same as before, the world has moved on and the humour just doesn't work now.

I'm not saying you shouldn't, and as I say the reviews suggest it's better than I found it to be... but that's just my opinion.

Inspired by my good friend Typhon - I have acquired a few collections of Hammer films. This one was bit odd but I still really enjoyed it. 7/10

We watched Coming 2 America last night. Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall have a lot of fun putting makeup on again, and I'm glad it was included with Prime. It's a straight-to-cable quality film, but short enough with plenty of quick gags that makes it fun and painless and, dare I say, feel good? I had a fun time with it.

That's been on my list for a while but haven't gotten around to it yet...

I should watch the first one again too (haven't seen it since the 90s) but I think that's not on Prime... :( And the only copy I have is on a recorded VHS...

I'll note that it gets a little preachy in places, but it doesn't weigh the film down. And Leslie Jones is hilarious.
