Been following this little scandal for the last few days that apparently the offical Ozzy US store sold fake signed Ordinary Man CD booklets.

Suspicions arose when purchasers that bought multiple copies(You could buy up to 5 ,even heard one person bought 20) found that at least 2 or 3 of the signatures were identical.  Buyers have also made comparisons to other cd booklets posted online and there seems to be 3 different identical versions which all points to them being auto-penned or stamped, not actually hand signed by Ozzy. Don’t know how many were sold but they sold out very quickly.(Thankfully I missed out)

So far there hasn’t been any reports about fakes from purchasers from the UK store, which were sold weeks before the US store ones or has there been any issues regarding the signed vinyls which in fairness weren’t actually advertised or sold as signed, buyers just received them signed. So it seems to be a US store issue only on the signed cds.

Hard to know if Ozzy was oblivious to it or this COVID-19 pandemic had an effect on him being able to sign them because as I mentioned the UK orders were done and sent out before this pandemic took hold and there is no suspicions about those. Maybe the UK store is handled by a different merch company not sure but I have seen it mentioned that apparently the merchandise company that handles the Ozzy US store has a history of this sort of behaviour with the other bands and artists they have on their books.

Also worth noting that these cds were sold for only  $13.99, same price as unsigned ones which I did think at the time seemed a little too good to be true, but it still doesn’t excuse the fact that it’s unscrupulous behaviour and very disappointing for those that purchased them.

I read something about this too...

Pretty ridiculous BUT also understandable and I think it's quite a common practice actually. Especially when they are in large numbers...but if you market it as HAND SIGNED then it's fraud...but if you market it as signed then it's not.

Yeah I agree Charger. These were sold as “Ozzy signed” as apposed to “hand signed” to be more precise and they weren’t sold at higher prices than an unsigned CD, just $13.99. Those that purchased multiple copies(some up to 20) were only obviously doing that to profiteer off fans that missed out by selling them on the resale market at jacked-up prices. So I say those particular people got what they deserved, but their would’ve been genuine fans that were desperate to just have something signed by Ozzy and not thinking it wasn't hand-signed. That’s where it’s shady.

With signatures you can never be sure though unless you get them signed in person, so it should always be buyer beware! Even when some bands post photos of them signing an item with a big pile of same item in front of them for pre-orders etc via their website or merch store you still can’t be sure either, that can just be set up to make it look like they’ve signed them.

I remember I pre-ordered a signed Nikki Sixx  “Heroine Dairies” book via a book company that specialised in signed books. Nikki even did a facebook live stream from his home where he was talking about the the book and the presale opportunity to get a signed book while he was signing them with a massive pile of books in front of him and full boxes of books around him. I remember thinking cool it is legit and hie’s actually signing them in full bold signature.

Not sure if the book company over sold or it was a ploy by them to make people feel better about purchasing one but the book I received was nothing but a small sticker placed on the title page with just Sixx scribbled(not Nikki) that you could hardly even make out. When I emailed them about it their reply was “ a lot of our books are only stickered signed” and the pre-orders were high so logistically its easier to sticker them” Which was bullshit as I’d ordered books from them before which weren’t stickered. “Yeah get fucked then, never again will I purchase from you you dodgy cunts” was my reply.

Back when I was in the record collecting scene, there were two things I never bothered with: signed albums and still-sealed albums.

If they had any traceable provenance I couldn't afford them anyway, and I wasn't collecting as an investment vehicle. I remember seeing a guy at a record show who had a stack of OKeh records from the 1920's. All of them "still sealed from the factory!". And they looked to all have cellophane wrapping. Problem was, they didn't seal them in anything back then.

So yeah, signatures and unopened records can be a crap shoot.

^Reminds me of people that sell signed items in different colour sharpies that were apparently signed before sharpies were even invented or were commonly used.

There's signed stuff out there that's mass produced and sold for mass produced prices that's fun to have, but, yeah... there are some very shady dudes out there trying to hustle collectors that have more dollars than brains...

Yeah...that's why I'm never willing to pay more for a signed cd or album.

If I want something signed I'll get it signed myself if possible.

That's why I love artists like Blaze Bayley who signs everything you buy from him free of charge anyways.

Most bands are releasing anniversary albums these days. And you’re gonna see a lot more of them, as well as a heap of reissues with their touring and merch sales from touring being completely shut off.

Watch for 28th anniversary and 42nd anniversary releases, as well. Touring can be a huge part of a band's income, gotta supplement.

When Ozzy heard Randy for the first time as told in great detail and clarity from the man who set the audition and meeting up, Dana Strum.

Great story.
