Changed the oil today...

The oil separator membrain seems to be broken so I ordered a new one... BMW says it cannot be changed as it is intregrated into the valve cover so that you'd need to change the entire valve cover (500€) but I found a company that has made a repair kit for just 80€ so I went for that...needs some DIY stuff but I like that kind of tinkering anyways.

So need to do that as soon as the part arrives.

Bit of engine work today...The PCV ventilation valve in the valve cover had let out a while ago already but knowing it might be a bit of a task to replace it (as per BMW it CANNOT be changed but the entire valve cover needs to be replaced at the nice price of 500€) I had put it off eventhough I had the part that I found online on the shelf for few weeks...

Anyways the job was fairly easy and the part itself cost only 70€ so quite a bit cheaper than the whole valve cover replacement which BMW gives as the only choice.


The valve sits under this pressed plastic cap.


Which needed to be cut off:

Clean everything up, new valve in, glue it in place and a new shiny aluminum cover on and job done:






Whole job took about 3 hours two of which were waiting for the glue to dry...

And now the car seems like it has a new lease on life. Feels like it gained 20hp and no more idling issues. Job well done.

Very few things are more satisfying than mechanical work on a car...getting your hands greasy and getting it done. Love it.

Changed summer tires on and noticed that the right side front spring is cut.

Arse.

Not a massive job but still a pain...well I have a week off next month so I guess I'll be changing some springs then.

That sucks. I have not wrenched on a car in years (actual work, not changing a battery or oil). I'd probably just make things worse if I tried at this point lol.

It crazy expensive to have your car fixed around here so I kind of have to do everything myself. Can't afford not to. But frankly car work isn't all that hard...and it's kind of fun too.
