Gaming Rig
« on: February 19, 2018, 10:22:47 AM »
Soooo... I work in IT and I have a home lab.

Part of my home lab is an old Dell T320 server that I use as a VM host. It's got 16 CPUs and 64GB of RAM.

I did a little checking, and it seems as though I'll be able to switch from using default onboard video to a PCI express 3.0 video card...  :whistling:

It's a holiday for me today in the USA, I think I'll pop around to the electronics store to see what kind of video card I can pick up so that my homelab server can do a few things for me when I'm done with work...

16cpu's???? Holy computing power batman!

I've got an i5 with 8gb of RAM...sounds pretty insignificant now... :D

I used to play a lot with my PC but then the graphics cards got really expensive and games started to require more and more so I dropped out for a year or two...

Then I bought a PS4 and I've been doing my playing with that now...Battlefield 4 and now COD WW2 which is excellent to say the least.

Geeks. Why not spend the time and money for a specific guitar model from a specific year instead? :)

Cause I can actually play with a computer...the only thing I can play with a guitar is the main riff of Smoke on the water and the intro to After All!!   :-[ :-[

ANYWAY...

Success! Tried a NVIDIA GeForce 1050, but that failed. Dropped down to the GT 730, works like a champ. And since it's running on Windows Server 2016, there are hardly any side processes running that crowd the CPU for attention.

So, if you want a fun time playing them games, I can recommend an old Dell server with a moderately hot graphics card. For my Old Man type games (Cities:Skylines, EU4, HOI4), I don't need a ton of GPU to make fun happen. My kids now are loading their games and are exclaiming that they're getting great FPS and almost zero lag.

The magic of 16 CPUs... :smug:

I don't have a gaming rig, per se, but I do have a PS 4 Pro. Bought it while recuperating so I could have something to do. Just now getting comfortable with the controller lol.

Similar to Zzz, I have a home lab. Nothing I can spare to run games on, though.

I'm more of a console gamer, although I have dabled in StarCraft time to time. I have all types of Gameboy up to Advance SP (the later only works), 3DS, S/NES, Wii, PS2/3, and an Ouya (yes, I own one and no,  I don't care if that console failed.) The real gem I've been fiddling around with however is a Retropie. I built one in response to the artificial scarcity of the NES and SNES Classic Mini for myself and my sister for Christmas last year. My sister's is put in a NES shell while mine is modelled after the Sega Genesis (Megadrive). I used the Sega Saturn controller setup because it resembles the Genesis controllers and it's perfect for fighting games like Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat.

UPDATE: For those wondering, here are two links I made, one list of videos that helped me make one, the other is an playlist I made for the menu music.

Oh wow, I love seeing those custom arcade rigs. When I was a teacher, I had a student that built them out and then another student that did the artwork that went on top of them. The artwork was nice to look at, but I always had a weakness for the wiring underneath.

Even if you're not building an arcade cabinet or a mini clone console, it is worth it to try and build the later and an arcade stick, especially now there are easy tutorials on the subject. This video here is how I built the joystick.
