Rush

Does anyone here listen to the band, that does not exist any more?
They have never been popular in Russia, despite of the lyrics reminding me of Russian Rock.

Yep, my 2nd favourite band after Sabbath.

I think the lyrics reflected Neil Pearts love of literature and while I doubt he was that way inclined politically, Ayn Rand influenced some of the songs such as 2112.

I listen to Rush. Their first record is standard blues/rock played loud. It's better than average and I've always enjoyed it. Then they started weaving progressive elements into their songs. There is a stark difference between Rush's self-titled debut and 2112. I really enjoy 2112.

I stopped paying much attention to them about the time Power Windows came out.

Yeah, they lost me at Power Windows. The progressive stuff was great through the 70s and 80s - Farewell to Kings one of my faves, along with Moving Pictures - but when the 80s caught up to them, I just couldn't find my way to enjoying their output. I tried, but eventually gave up after a few more releases.

So very nice to hear from you again! Been a long time!

I've never really been a big Rush fan myself...I do like 2112...but Geddy's vocals aren't really my cup of tea. So I haven't really given them much of a chance either for that reason.

I know that Neil Elwood was a bookworm. As a language scholaress I am interested in their lyrics.

First time I heard Rush, I said, "Wow, that bass player is amazing, but they need to get a new singer!"

Hahah! Indeed. The problem I've always had with Geddy is that his voice is so overly generic and really has nothing going for it....I think Rush could have been something great if they'd gotten a proper singer.

Geddy's vocals improved somewhat after the early albums, but yes, it's an acquired taste!

The big "blip" in quality came with Power Windows (although the first 3 tracks were ok, the last 5 not so!) and then Hold Your Fire came out and there's like 1 halfway interesting song on there... ugh! After that they improved again (I really like Presto and Vapor Trails, and Clockwork Angels is nearly in their top 3).

I became a fan in 1980 and saw them live twice, in 1981 and 1982; I like all of their output up to and including Exit Stage Left, their 2nd live album.  My favourite Rush album is Permanent Waves.
