Tony Bennett, age 96.

When I was a kid, I didn't want to give any crooner the time of day. If it wasn't rock - harder the better - it was a hard sell to get my interest.

Then I'm working in an office and we're having a music discussion and someone calls me out for not knowing the standards, how could I be so ignorant of them? "Buncha old-time crooners", I said.

So he tells me to listen to them with modern recordings - the technology of today does such a better job of capturing their vocals. OK, fine, I'll go along with that...

Fly me to the moon...

Oh.

WOW.

OK, so there's something to these old crooners... something really special...

Tony Bennett was a true legend for sure.

I remember seeing him in a lot of Vegas set movies and tv-shows over the years.

One of my favorite Christmas albums is the one he did with the Count Basie Orchestra - his version of "The Christmas Waltz" is my favorite.

The man could sing! I have never been a fan of the style of music he performed, but great talent is easily recognizable and respected. RIP

William Friedkin has died at the age of 87.

Director of such 70s classics as The Exorcist and The French Connection, the Oscar winner is thought to have had a heart attack.

His last film - The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial - is completed and should be released in due course.

Finland's former president and one of the last people to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for actually working for peace MARTTI AHTISAARI passed away yesterday at the age of 86.

Ahtisaari as president wasn't the most prominent figure nor did he achieve a lot but after his presidency he strived for peace on 3 different continents.

The interesting thing is that his own party shut him out and prevented him from running for second term because at the time most of the socialists were totally in Russia's pocket and did not like the fact that Ahtisaari was bringing Finland closer to the west and was even thinking about joining NATO in the late 90s. Instead they went for Tarja Halonen who was nothing but a tool for Russia and Putin....and she did last two terms!

Suzanne Somers of Three's Company fame, passed away recently in the USA.

She got fired from the show because she asked for equal pay. She was earning a fifth of John Ritter's amount per episode. Best revenge, though, is living well, and the Thighmaster put her on top of the game.

Quite shocking to hear about the passing of Matthew Perry.

Back in the day I quite liked Friends (the first few seasons anyways) and Chandler was my favourite character. And Perry's later roles in Studio 60 and The Odd Couple were stellar as well.

I know he had his struggles as well but he over came them well and proved to be something of an example to people struggling with addictions.

He was just 54 years old and apparently he drowned in his own swimming pool. Tragic to say the least.

There is a reason why people really really REALLY should stay as far away from water as possible.

^^^
I saw that, it's sad news indeed.

I don't think I've seen a full episode of Friends, but all the main cast are well known regardless.

I heard that they found him in his hot tub, I'm sure there's more to it than just drowning, maybe a medical emergency or a mishap.

What's great to hear about Perry is the testimonials of people he helped on their paths to sobriety. He really put his heart into helping others.

Indeed. He did a lot of good and helped a lot of people. It's a real damn shame that people like him go so damn early.

Shane MacGowan from The Pogues has died at the age of 65 after a period of ill-health.

Probably best known for the Christmas hit Fairy Tale of New York with Kirstie McColl and The Irish Rover with The Dubliners

The only shock is he didn't die 30 years ago! He had a history of drink and drug abuse and even in the 80s looked at deaths door!

I heard an anecdote a long time ago that MacGowan was planning a little weekend get-together with some folks, and had extended an invitation to Keith Richards. Mr. Richards supposedly declined with the comment that he wasn't sure he'd live to see Monday if he participated.
