I personally am not a huge Best Of- fan...as I prefer getting the full discography of the bands I like.

That being said I do think Best of collections do have a purpose, they are quite often an easy (and cost effective) way to find out about a new band or artist...or were should I say as nowadays ofcourse Youtube has come to take their place.

I think if I'd be recommending bands and I'd have to choose best of collections to people I think I'd say

DIO - Diamonds - The Best Of Dio
Megadeth - Capitol Punishment
Black Sabbath - Between Heaven And Hell
Ozzy Osbourne - The Ozzman Cometh
Ian Gillan - Gillan's Inn
Iron Maiden - Best Of The Beast
Cathedral - The Serpents Gold

I think those are all pretty good best of collections that you did not mention. And have a fairly decent collection of songs that best represent the bands' earlier years.

Golden Hits of the Everly Brothers. I could transcribe the music to every song on that record just because I've heard it so often. It was one of my mom's favorites and it saw a lot of action when I was a kid. Somehow, I ended up with that record and I still have it.

So, music that was not of my time, and that I did not buy, carved a spot in my psyche.

Deepest Purple for sure is a strong compilation album.

Mark, Don, and Mel was a great introduction to Grand Funk Railroad, I'd recommend that one, as well.

Elvis' History 1 - a collection of his #1 hits - is also quite good, as is The Best of Little Richard from Rhino CDs.
