Accept
« on: September 19, 2018, 04:44:10 PM »
Well okay I gotta admit I have never really been much of an Accept fan and frankly didn't even know many of their songs (part from Balls To The Wall obviously)...

But seeing that there are some Accept fans here and having watched Doro's 30th Anniversary show where Udo joined her to preform couple of Accept songs I got bit interested actually...especially when he did a song called Princess Of The Dawn which I had never heard before and it was a rather brilliant track...granted ofcourse it was done with Doro's band AND with a full orchestra but still....A great track.

I had known obviously that Udo had parted ways a while ago with Accept and they now have a new singer called Mark Tornillo who is a great singer too from what I've heard. He preformed a song with A Sound Of Thunder on their latest album It Was Metal.

I checked out some live clips from both Udo and Accept preforming Princess Of The Dawn and I enjoyed them both.

Anyways I was thinking about getting myself some Accept albums so I'm looking for suggestions now...

Restless And Wild is the obvious choice now and that will be my first purchase, but what else?

Check out Breaker , Restless and Wild (their best) , Balls to the Wall and Metal Heart.
the last 4 albums with Tornillo are pretty good too , especially Blood of The Nations and Stalingrad. Love this singer since TT Quick , better than Udo nowadays.

Balls to the Wall and Metal Heart would be my recommendation.

You're starting on the right track with Restless and Wild. First time I dropped the needle on track one side A back in 83 it literally blew my head off! At that moment when the riff and double bass drums of Fast As A Shark kicked in it was the most insanely heavy and fastest thing I'd ever heard and I became an instant and lifelong fan from that moment on...

May I suggest you stick with Breaker through to Metal Heart 81-85. All four albums through those years are great. They got a little more polished and commercial from Balls onwards as they were trying to crack the States but those albums are still very riff heavy and catchy and along with Breaker and Restless represent the best of the Udo era. The earlier albums the S/T debut and I'm a Rebel are ok too but they were a young band and still very much refining their sound.

I was quite apprehensive when the band reformed without Udo many years later as the first attempt without Udo 1989's Eat The Heat proved disastrous and only lasted the one album before they officially broke up...But such was my love for the band and Wolf Hoffmann's playing I was more than willing to be open-minded and give this new incarnation of Accept a go.

Any misgivings I might have had were quickly allayed when I heard a demo of the band jamming on Flash Rockin' Man with new singer Mark Tornillo and then the subsequent album they released Blood Of The Nations(2010). It was just a stunning return to to form. They managed to recapture the old school sound and style of the band but with a modern heavy production. Tornillo has a very similar tone to Udo at both his low register and top end scream but delivers with even more power while also very much bringing his own style to it. Mark has definitely breathed new life into Accept and with him also being a an accomplished lyricist he's added a new depth to the lyrics. Both Blood of the Nations and the follow-up Stalingrad for me rank up there with the best of their classic 80's output. Blind Rage and The Rise Of Chaos which came after are also albums I enjoy but have a slight drop off in songwriting quality but Wolf still very much brings the killer memorable riffs and solos on those albums.

I hope you grow to like to them Charger, I think they have a sound and style that should be right in your wheelhouse. I'm a huge fan and rate them as highly as as I do both Maiden and Priest. Wolf Hoffmann is an amazingly talented and very underrated heavy metal(not to mention classical) guitarist.

Also worth checking out the U.D.O. stuff starting with Animal House through to Faceless World with Mastercutter being the best of the rest.

Yes Jack I thought you'd be the expert on the subject as I remembered you being a big fan!

Thanks for the info!

I just ordered Restless and Wild and I will start with that. It only cost 7.95€...

I'm hoping I'll get into them...and I might check out Blood Of The Nations next..

So I got Restless And Wild yesterday been listening to it a few times...

It hasn't given me any mind blowing sensations.

Pretty good solid metal but that's about it.

Udo's vocals are pretty interesting sounding. I have to say his voice has gotten better with age.

Demon's Night, Flash Rockin' Man and obviously Princess Of The Dawn are the best tracks...the rest are between good and okay to cringy.

That being said I do want to check out more of their stuff and I think the album they did with Mark Tornillo might be next if I see a good deal on it someday.

Edit:
Is there a live album with Udo I could check out?

^^Staying A Life recorded on the Metal Heart tour of 85 but not released until 1990. Really great sounding live album when they were at the peak of their 80's powers.

Restless and Live released last year is another great live album of theirs too. The band sounds amazing on it. If you ever get a chance to see them live do yourself a favour and check them out. They are a phenomenally great sounding and very tight live band.

R&W is a classic but I can understand someone listening to it now for the first time maybe hearing it a little different. It's 36 years old this year but if you can imagine back to 1982 and what was around at the time it had a sound and style that made it very much one on the standout albums of the day.

I looked at Restless and Live and that's the first one with Mark Tornillo...might be interesting as well.

Well I'll be checking out if there are good deals on some Accept albums.
