The Song Remains The Same
« on: September 26, 2018, 10:11:31 PM »
I don't know how long it's been around but I recently discovered AXS TV. They have a variety of programming but a lot of it is Rock interviews, concerts, docs and "Classic Albums". I hadn't seen or heard "The Song Remains the Same" in a long while so I watched the movie.

WOW, worse than I remembered. That wasn't a Zep concert, that was "The Jimmy Page Show". Most of the show was Jimmy improvising after a verse of a song which left Plant nothing to do but moan and groan. JPJ and Bonzo were great but again they were just following Jimmy's improv. I got nothing against improv like Iommi used to do back in the day, but not EVERY song. The only song they played all the way through was Stairway and even then they had to slip that Tango section in there. My favorite part was Boogie Momma sandwiched in between Whole Lotta Love.

What do you guys think?

I own it on DVD but I have never liked it really. Some great playing going on here and there but I found most of the performances lame and tired. I hate the soundtrack album - bloated horseshit.

When I was younger, it was fun to do a Robert Plant impersonation. All we had to do was this:

I have this show, I like it with the gangster type introduction it has always found it entertaining.

I like Zeppelin, you have to admire how they stuck to their guns and didn't continue after Bonham's death.

The trick with any live recording is not knowing ahead of time if what you're going to record is going to be a great concert or something less than that. Some guys had a better than even chance of putting on a good show, like Zeppelin, but you were still rolling the dice when it came to setting up the cameras and microphones.

That being said, I read just now about the 2007 remastering of this album that said the sound quality is vastly improved. Might be worth giving it a listen.
