No, but when it can be done and it sounds good, then it should be done. Vai doesn't sound good. Some BM and other Extreme Metal does. But now this is turning into a back&forth "no, you are" type discussion, i don't think we'll get any more constructive out of it.
Conclusion: I like Black Metal, you don't. Easy as that... :)

I've got the same criticism on Vai's work, for what it's worth. Just because something can be done doesn't mean it should be done.

Yeah, but I've never heard Vai play the solo from Rock Around the Clock. No fretboard magic involved, just single-picked really damn fast. Like a mandolin player. Plus, he has guitars with a fucking handle built in. Black Metal came about as a direct response to guitars with built in handles. Gah.

All I can add to this is that I am a huge Extreme Metal fan, in particular Death Metal. I must say though that Cannibal Corpse is shit and should NOT be used as the benchmark for "real" Extreme Metal let alone Death Metal.

Listen to Death after Spiritual Healing and you will find some pretty deep and ungory stuff. In defense of some of the gore - they are like watching horror movies just in a musical form. Not to be taken seriously and I think most fans of this type of Metal know that.

It's one thing to talk about Horror and killing and other unsavory subjects, then it is to commit actual murder. There are thousands of Extreme Metal bands and the vast majority of them have never committed any crimes at all.

True... as far as I know, neither Stephen King nor Slayer have been committing crimes, let alone killing people...

Wow, this thread is pretty frustrating for me - it seems that almost everything I have said was misunderstood. My point was NOT (and I thought I had made that clear, but apparently I didn't) the old boring (mostly Christian-conservative) idea that people who listen to aggressive music go out and kill or rape someone afterwards. Looks like I am having huge problems here to express my thoughts, so I will give it a long break, or just leave it at that. There are enough discussions going on here on TC that work better. And even this one takes place in a civilised manner, which is phantastic if you compare it to you-know-what-place.  :partay:

My post was not necessarily directed at you but was a general response to the thread itself. I was not accusing you of "My point was NOT (and I thought I had made that clear, but apparently I didn't) the old boring (mostly Christian-conservative) idea that people who listen to aggressive music go out and kill or rape someone afterwards" - sorry if was not clear in my writing.

Thanks for clarifying. I didn't feel accused anyway, just misunderstood (which is probably my own fault), and my comment was mostly addressed to Billy - another thing I should have made clearer.  ;D
