Let's not forget Uriah Heep, because they sure could rock out back in the day.

My favorite recording of theirs was their 1973 live album, and my favorite track from it was "Circle of Hands". Here it is now, in excellent sound quality:

BTW, that's Lee Kerslake on the skins. Such a pity he can't play on Ozzy's records no more!

EDIT: when he really kicks in around 7:40, that's my favorite part of my fave UH song.

And how about UH doing "The Wizard" on The Top of the Whistle Test or something like that, maybe it was Blue Peter or The Young Ones... :)

And then that video linked to this one of Ken Hensley doing the same song, fully acoustic. It's my second favorite UH song, so I'll post it twice. :)

Kerslake is up there with Ward and Bonzo
Just like Gary Thain was up there with Butler and Enwistle. A shame he wasn't around for long, neither in Heep or in life... Wanted to join the 27 club instead... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/27_Club

Lots of great talent in that band, even if they weren't the most photogenic guys. BTW, John Glascock, bassist for Jethro Tull, died at 28. What's up with that? Timing issue, maybe?

Sad thing with Uriah Heep was that they went down in quality pretty fast after their Wonderworld album. Return to Fantasy and High and Mighty were meh and then after David Byron left, I listened to the next two releases maybe 2 or 3 times and then shelved them.

(haha, you said glasscock...  ;D ::) :P )
Wow, bad timing. There's a bunch at 27, from Robert Johnson to Kurt Cobain. Well, i guess Amy Winehouse was the latest.
The whole myth started with Brian Jones, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison, with exactly two years on the day between Brian and Jim...
Cobain supposedly told his sister as a teen that he wanted to join "the 27 club"...

I have to admit, though, as far as Heep goes, i mostly stick with Live '73, and Gary Thain is a big reason for that. A bit more improv than on the albums...

Their first two albums were a matter of them finding their way. Things came together on Look at Yourself, loved that platter. After that, Demons and Wizards, The Magician's Birthday, Live '73, Sweet Freedom. If you stop there, you've got the classic stuff that ages pretty well.

Yeah, and they're all good albums, esp Look onwards. But the bass is more restrained than on Live '73. I love them bassists running wild  :jammin: 8)

Then I need to start a Grand Funk thread... Mel Schachter was amazing.

Uriah Heep have always been one of my top bands. Never got to see them when Dave Byron was on vocals but I did get to see them for the first time at Reading Festival 1976. This was just after John Lawton, another great singer had joined. The show was great, they played mainly old numbers :);):)

Great band indeed, especially in the early years.
