OK, all y'all... what are your go-tos for car music?
I got a pair of Deep Purple tunes to kick off the discussion... Highway Star and Drifter.
Highway Star is pretty obvious - it's best on a road with some curves or where you can drive straight and fast AND WITH NO TRAFFIC. This song SUCKS if you are stuck in traffic! I know from sad, sad experience...
Drifter may take some explaining...
The guitar riff just sounds like the best music for getting in the car and backing out into the street for a neighborhood drive. When it has a mellow break around 2:40, that's a perfect part for a sunny day I think, and then it builds into a climax that goes great with any time of year, really. I love it on the road.

Radar Love by Golden Earring has often been cited as the best driving song. And a song often cited as one not to listen to while driving is Death Rape 2000 by Wiseblood which is 3 notes repeated after each for 7½ minutes and which can cause drivers to speed up excessively (even though the notes do not speed up).

Highway Star's a classic driving song for sure...
Best driving songs are fast and have a good tempo and lyrics that somehow connect to driving.
But I listen to all kinds of music while driving...I don't really have any special songs or stuff....
The way I do it now with USB drive is I just copy the band's entire discography (excluding the songs I don't like ofcourse) under one folder and either put it on random or just play it in chronological order depending on the mood....and the band.
Now I've got Anthrax, Blaze Bayley Cathedral, Candlemass, DIO, Judas Priest, Iced Earth, Rob Zombie, Huntress, Ozzy, Rainbow (Dio years only obviously), Sons Of Apollo and The Dark Element.
Next I think I'll go with maybe Megadeth or Savatage...both have such a vast discography that it'll take some time to copy them from cds to the usb....especially with some of the editing needed...

South Of Heaven by Slayer and Vulgar Display Of Power by Pantera have always been my go to driving music.

Side note: when I'm doing a big ol' Texas road trip, I play just about every country song made in Texas that mentions Texas because I like Texas. And, yes, there's a song, "I Like Texas". Another fave is "Another Stupid Texas Song." :smug:
Radar Love *is* a great driving song. Along with Highway Star, it was in Top Gear's top 10 list, along with the absolutely excellent "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen. That's a delightful singalong in almost any vehicular condition, even parked in a lot.

All great driving songs. Here's one for when "defensive driving" isn't in the cards:

Getting back to more middle-of-the-road hard rock...
I love this song by Croatian band Cojones, appropriately titled "Rocker". The stoner drum/bass line is perfect for driving, especially long hauls:
