At 9:30 this morning, we had two dogs and two cats. At 10:30 this morning we had two dogs and one cat. The oldest critter of the lot was 21 years old when I took her to the vet for her send off to the unknown.
She lived with us for 20 of those 21 years. We had adopted her from a local animal shelter in November of 2000 - and from the first day we brought her home until two days ago she was fucking crazy. She danced to her own tune and was a pain in the ass.
She went downhill fast, kidney failure they say.
I'm going to miss her. The little hole her departure has left in me will heal, just as others have in the past. But the memory will remain.

Sorry to hear about that Vyn, I think 21 for a cat is a good old age, but even so it's a shame.
-
So sorry, Vyn. So very sorry.
-
Sorry for your loss Vyn. Cats can get really close to us, it is such sadness to say goodbye.
-
Thanks guys. Yeah, she lived a good long life. Had at least 50 mouse kills to her name. She earned her keep :)

Sorry for your loss Vyn. Always tough losing a much loved family pet/member. 21 years is one hell of an innings though. She must’ve been a very happy and well cared for cat.

Thanks Jack!

I'm so sorry about this bad news Vyn. The loss of a pet remains a terrible ordeal to overcome. We always wonder how these adorable little furballs can take up so much space in our hearts. No doubt their manner of communicating without speaking is worth more than any word. Your little creature now rest in peace.

Thanks Tyr!

So very sorry to hear that buddy! Pets are family...and they love and are loved just like people.
This hits me very close to home as well...since my buddy for over 18 years Leo has not been feeling all that good lately. Twice now he has gone completely lethargic and it's taken quite a while for him to recover...last night was one of those episodes...I kept him in my arms all night...didn't get any sleep but he luckily did atleast a bit.
Don't really know what's wrong with him but it ain't anything good...he stresses out so much going to the vet that I'm hesitant to take him...might actually be worse...but we shall see.

^^^
That sounds worrying. Is it possible to speak to your vet, describe the symptoms and get advice before stressing Leo and taking him in? He might be able to help without the visit.
-
Yeah I was thinking of that too. If it happens again I will give the vet a call. The good thing is the vet station is less than a 1km away so who knows I might be able to persuade her to make a house call...probably not though.
-
Thanks for the thoughts Charger - I hope Leo is just having a temporary concern!
-
I'm sure Leo is a fighter , Charg' ! All the best for your little Tiger !
-
Thanks guys...
Leo's been feeling bit better the past couple of days...no issues...been sleeping a lot though...but still eating quite well too.
-
That's good news!

So, one hour ago I came downstairs and found our cat #2 dead. This was not unexpected, she was a month shy of 21 and had been declining rapidly these past few days. I actually had a call in at the vet for tomorrow at 2pm. to put her to sleep. That's how bad she had gotten. Last night I gave a her bowl of tuna fish, and held her upright and she ate some of it. She still had her appetite, and after I laid her back down she purred as I petted her.
I guess she decided she wanted to go at home. Don't blame her.
-
Again, I'm so sorry to hear that.
-
Vyn, so sorry for you to hear too. These are always difficult times to live.
-
Sorry for your loss Vyn - losing a cat can be very difficult. A day does not go by that I do not think of my cat Garfield.
-
Very sorry for your loss Vyn!
It's great though that you had some time with her and that you didn't need to take her to the vet...
This brought some emotions to the surface again for me as well...as we're getting closer to the 4 month anniversary of Leo's passing...so I feel your sorrow brother.
-
Thanks guys, I'll miss her. My dogs are even acting a little "off" today, like they know another member of our home has left - or maybe I'm just projecting lol.
-
Sorry for your loss Vyn. She must’ve been one very happy much loved and well taken care of cat to make it to 21.
-
Thanks Jack

The dogs know. And it's good that you're all able to be together at this time.
