Title: Born Again
Post by: Billy Underdog on February 15, 2018, 03:13:41 PM
Dozy, just wondering; as a die hard DP fan, what do you think about me considering Born Again the only "true" non-Ozzy Sabbath album?

I think that, because three of the four original band members contributed to it, it's numbered as a "true" album alongside the Dio ones, hence the album 13... 8 Ozzy + 2 Dio + Gillan + one more Dio + Reunion with Ozzy = 13

As a fan of both DP and Sabbath, I was confused and excited when I learned that Gillan was in Black Sabbath, not having heard that Gillan's solo band was broken up. Overall, the album wasn't anyone's strongest writing, but there were some good times on the LP. "Disturbing the Priest" was Gillan recycling the tune from "Scarabus" and a bit shouty for my taste, but I loved "Trashed", "Zero the Hero", "Born Again", and "Hot Line." "Keep It Warm" I enjoyed as an album-ender and I played the album a lot when I was young, back in the day.

It hasn't aged as well as other albums, though. I prefer the new version of "Trashed" from the latest Gillan/Iommi effort, ZTH is still listenable, but the others have really faded out of my desire to keep listening to the way I keep playing stuff from Mob Rules or Sabotage.

Which was actually taken from Gillan's Inn. I like that version too...the softer guitar tone works better sort of.

As far as this being any less or more "true" Sabbath album than any other album that has Black Sabbath on the cover...well no, it is not. No Black Sabbath album can be any more or less of a Black Sabbath album than any other Black Sabbath album as they are all Black Sabbath albums...part from Seventh Star which isn't a Black Sabbath album but a Black Sabbath Featuring Tony Iommi album. ;)

As you know, to me it is.
Yes, there was a time as a teen when i was a fan of the Dio era, even some Dio solo, but in my late teens/early 20's i left Metal for a while, and when i came back i had become disgusted by that kind of singing. Also the band was alot more slick, less groove, more chord-based (singer/songwriter folk with fuzz. Not that that's bad in itself, but not Sabbath for me). Geez and Bill (on H&H atleast) was less groovy too. Actually Mob Rules was my fave of the two. I guess this had to do with the 80's kicking in as a whole.
But Born Again is the most 70's sounding album after the 70's, both with groove, songwriting and sound. And Gillan really fit with my idea of Sabbath. And i love how bass-heavy it is. Bill had really gotten his act straight when he became sober (the first time).
Side one is my fave, and The Fallen was a hidden gem we were lucky to get with the deluxe editions. Bills intro to that...  :drummer:

Yeah I know...I love teasing you about this Billy!

I do really enjoy Born Again...the mix is terrible though and I was hoping we would have gotten a remix with the DE but that was not to be....

70s sounding....I haven't really ever thought of that but you might have a point. But one thing is for sure Born Again is one of the HEAVIEST Sabbath albums of all time.

Fallen is good, still think it should have been on the album instead of Keep It Warm.

Without a doubt.

OK, now I have to listen to "The Fallen", had not heard it before...

Yeah, it's pretty good. Would have preferred it to "Digital Bitch". But, mercy, that muddy production!

Back to the song, it's another one that sounds a lot like it came from a Gillan album instead of Black Sabbath proper. It kind of rambles around, as well, so I can see why it wasn't kept. Kind of unfocused, but still fun.

I always liked keep it warm as the closer. Very doomy which was the closest to old Sabbath after SOTSC on Mob Rules.

The Fallen ist somehow imperfect, but still a fantastic song IMHO. Actually my favourite song of the album.

So, Gillan... can anyone else hear how he's singing differently because of his vocal cord nodule?

Well, if anything he've never screamed so much his whole career, so there might be that...

I was shocked at the difference his vocal surgery made between this album and Perfect Strangers.

Of course, that's when he started to scream differently...

Right now, Born Again is my favorite Black Sabbath Album! I bought a shirt with the cover on it and I love wearing it in public!

Agreed.  In fact, I have always referred to these as follows:

The great 8 & 13 = Black Sabbath
The Dio 3 = Black Sabbath with Dio singing
Born Again = Black Sabbath with Gillan singing
Anything else = Not Sabbath

I agree with Zzzptm.

Bill only played on Heaven and Hell so that would make 1 Dio album with 3 of the 4 original... no?

You are correct.
