Title: The 10 Movies That Impacted You Most Growing Up
Post by: Jack the Stripper on May 12, 2020, 03:03:57 AM
So we’ve had the 10 albums that most influenced you growing up so why not do something similar with movies. The 10 movies that had the most impact on you growing up and have stayed with you. So not a top 10 all time favourites list although I’m sure some of them are for having had such an impact on you.

Like the albums we’ll do one movie each per day and you don’t have to do a write up or mini review but you can if you want.

Day 1

Star Wars

Just a great story with great characters which appealed to both young and old audiences. The visual effects were like nothing anyone had seen before and changed the way movies were made from there on. No movie has transcended generations quite like the original Star Wars has.

I’m an original Star Wars kid and saw each of the movies at the cinema as they were being released so this is an obvious pick for me.

That has to be on my list, as well. It came out when I was 8/9, Third/Fourth grade. We all had a contest about who had seen it the most times. I racked up over 20 views in the summer after its release. Magical, wonderful, exciting, fresh film - IN ITS ORIGINAL FORM. I have no special attachment to versions with remastered effects or added scenes... or *edited* scenes. This is a movie that has always been emotional for me, so it has affected my life more than once. I am at peace because I now have a digital version of the original release, in the original screen format ratio. To me, there is no other version. I watch it and it would definitely be one of my desert island films.

ROCKY

Such a moving, uplifting and motivating sports movie. Superbly written with brilliant casting and performances. Loved this movie as a kid and still do.

Sort of a cheat but I wasn't using up 3 slots on this franchise! A great trilogy and final part is quite probably the best film ever made!

Absolute Masterpiece.
Watched for the first time with friends in the attic of a friend's house while drinking Monacos (beer with grenadine syrup). He had installed armchairs around a TV connected to a VHS player. unforgettable moment.

Its not all that hard. It’s not so much an all time favourites list but more about the movies you remember most that stood out and impacted you growing up from your childhood years onwards.

Yeah I know...but it's still hard...

I'll kick it off with this though:

This was my first Dirty Harry movie and I think my first Clint Eastwood movie as well...of that though I can't be entirely sure. Recorded it on VHS from tv back in the day. I remember watching it over and over again as I thought Harry was one of the coolest characters I'd ever seen. Took me a good long while to see the other Dirty Harry movies though...but when I did I loved them too. And still do...so much in fact that I just bought the bluray boxset with all 4 movies!

JtS shared my Day 1... My Day 2 is...

Akira Kurosawa's epic The Seven Samurai.

When I was a teen in the 80s, I got into the Art House scene. I was lucky that Dallas had the Granada Theater up until late '86, by which time I was at UT Austin, where I could continue my Art House fix.

But before I could drive, I'd get my mom to drop me off if she wasn't going to also see the flick, and I'd be there. I read about movies and had heard that The Seven Samurai was one of the best ever. I yearned to see it. Finally, it came for a 3-day showing at the Granada and I was all over it like a donkey on a waffle.

It did not disappoint.

My favorite character was the stern, stoic master swordsman who worked at perfecting his craft while at the same time being aware that he was setting an example for the young samurai in the group. Ever after, whenever I had a tough trial ahead of me or a major test in school, I thought of that master, entering a fighting stance and becoming one with his craft.

Day 3

Superman: The Movie

Brilliantly adapted to film with a great mix of action, heart and humour and one of the great ensemble casts ever assembled, Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Ned Beatty, Jackie Cooper, Glenn Ford, Terence Stamp, Valerie Perrine and the wonderful Christopher Reeve who captured the spirit of Superman so amazingly well, and not to mention the brilliant music of John Williams. Superman was the only blockbuster comic book superhero movie from my pre teenage years and still to this day remains the definite Superman movie.

Yep loved that movie so much as a kid. I bought a replica of Conan’s Atlantean Sword a few years after and also developed a love for the fantasy art of Frazetta and Ken Kelly.
I’m putting mine in chronological order and was going to include it in my 10 but I’ll probably leave it out now.

I’m almost certain there’s at least one other movie we will both have Tyr. I’m still a couple of days off posting it  :)

Day 2

I've gone with the first horror film that actually gave me the creeps. 1980s The Changeling was a ghost story which relied on atmosphere and tension; there was little blood and certainly no jump-scares which have become the hallmark of modern horror films.

One of the scariest movies I saw as a kid was this one...I remember actually flinching when I saw the skinned bodies on the tree. Great memories. I must have been 11 or 12 at the time...and this was one of the movies that started my love with all things sci-fi and horror and action.

I got a feeling my list is going to be very unique. :D

I was newly married and this movie started running on cable. My wife and I watched it, loved it, and watched it every time it came on. After we watched it for the 3rd or 4th time, my wife turned to me and said, "I need a baby."

And she meant it. My lawless years were behind me and my child-rearing years lay ahead. :D We've always loved the film and quote it constantly. Our first knows that this was the movie that got the ball rolling. :smug:

So, yes, very impacted me, this movie did.

Day 4

Alien

A brilliantly paced and stylish sci fi horror thriller packed with suspense and terror. Masterfully directed by Ridley Scott with great production design and music and a career making performance from Sigourney Weaver. I remember vividly my dad took us to see Alien at the movies and it was the first time I’ve ever been scared at the cinema and has stayed with me ever since, especially the chest bursting scene.

Alien set the bar in suspenseful horror and chilling terror which to this day has never been bettered.

Absolute masterpiece! Sergio Leone’s epic gangster tale. One of the great gangster movies.

Mate it seems we have a lot more in common than just music. Unreal, that’s 3 movies and we haven’t got to the other movie yet that I’m sure you’re gonna have as well.

The Thing would have been on my list, so would have been Alien and Star Wars... So I guess I have to find others... :)

So gotta go with my all time favourite STAR TREK movie then. This also I think was my first ST movie I ever saw...I know for a fact it was my first one I ever bought on VHS.

I loved the original series but The Next Generation just raised the bar on all sci-fi shows at the time...it was unlike anything else...and the cast was just perfect. When they jumped into the movies they sure made it big...

First saw this on VHS, thought it was a dumb mass-produced anime movie at first until I read the blurb on the back with Roger Ebert going nuts over how awesome he thought it was. Now, I trusted Ebert for kids' movies, and if that popcorn hound gave it a golden thumb up, I was down with that.

And I've been a Miyazaki fan ever since. Yes, this is a kids' movie, but it's also an adults' movie. Beautiful story, compelling animation, and a magical spirit combine to make this a perfect gateway to the work of that gifted director. He's absolutely on the same level as Kurosawa, from this and other films.

Day 5

Mad Max 2

A totally engrossing awe-inspiring post-apocalyptic action film with bad ass characters and bad ass cars. The stunts and chase scenes are incredible and all real with no CGI or special effects. Mad Max 2 is as good as action films get, directed by the absolute master of the craft in George Miller and stunningly shot by another master in Dean Semler with a stirring soundtrack by Brian May.

I saw it at the movies when it came out and it instantly became my favourite movie and have been obsessed with it ever since...So much so, I collect everything I can find on this movie, original movie posters, program, soundtrack, auto-art model cars and figurines. I even bought a similar model of car as Max’s V8 interceptor for my first car.

Love, love, love this movie...

This film upset me forever. Unmatched since its release by the very good Red Dragon or by the so so  Hannibal.
The score signed by  Howard Shore contributes to the depressive anxiety . An intensity rarely achieved born of this ambiguous relationship between Clarice and Lecter. The scenes in the jail are just exceptional, the two characters only separated by this armored glass. Chilling.
The last scene showing Lecter under a white hat chasing this bastard Chilton just after his arrival in the Bahamas ... so Evil.

Day 5 for me...

Pretty sure this is NOT one the rest of the gang here is familiar with, but it's very near and dear to my heart. When I had returned to teaching in 2002, I had just seen a news piece on Bollywood and I asked offhand about where I'd be able to see one of these films. A very enthusiastic student of mine came forward and asked if I was serious. I said yes, and the next day she brought 5 films for me to see!

She told me to start with this one, though. If I liked it, I'd be ready for Bollywood, full bore and both barrels. If I didn't like it, well, best to stop there.

I was hooked from the start. The ending had me hitting the kleenex like I'd never done before in a film - and it was a *happy* ending! I learned early and powerfully that Bollywood is not afraid to send your emotions in every direction, one right after the other. The music numbers push those emotions in ways that Western cinema rarely achieves, and they do it masterfully and nearly every time from certain production houses. Yash Raj films made this one, and everything from their catalog is practically an instant classic.

I fell so hard in love with Bollywood that I started to show it in my classroom during lunch every school day for the next 11 years, and that's how I wound up learning Hindi and Urdu. Yes, the falsetto soprano voices take some getting used to, but I found them easier to take than King Diamond, so I'm good with that.  :smug:

Every one of the leads in this film is a superstar and correctly so. The old guy in the middle, Amitabh Bachchan, is a fantastic actor, with a gravitas like few can muster. I would not mind one bit if I woke up one day and was him, not one bit at all.

I'm a little rusty now, not having done Bollywood every day for about 7 years, but I can still sing along with all the songs, once I get warmed up. This one has a great soundtrack, one of the best - although I think Devdas has *the* best music, but that's for another discussion.

Escape From New York

John Carpenters dystopian crime action thriller complete with a killer concept, iconic characters and superb musical score composed and performed by the great man himself. There was a time in my childhood when I wanted to be Snake Plissken.

One of the most original and classic movies to come out of the 80’s.

Ah my friend, i decided to choose a single carpenter film, so I named The Thing a few days ago but obviously Escape from New-York is of course the second Carpenter film I enjoyed the most.
Many many years ago, a friend told me about this movie . He had described to me the character Snake Plissken: his blindfold, his outfit, his implanted mini-bombs ... I had been captivated. A whole era.
I was talking about characters from the Metal culture: Snake is definitely one of the first heroes.

Here we enter the Pantheon of science-fiction and anticipation cinema. Utopia or dystopia?
Of course the score of Vangelis Papathanassiou is a character in its own right (this saxophone ..) The city of Los Angeles by night under a pouring rain, the Chinese quarter and its noodle restaurants in the street as well.
Harrison Ford has never played such a sad character. Rutger Hauer as the replicant Roy Batty is unforgettable. The last scene on the roof, his last words and the dove that finally flies away. What a moment . The theory on the true "nature" of Deckard is very interesting and the clues (the unicorn ...) which leads there throw even more the disorder on the direction of the very last final sequence.
They don't know how to make movies like this anymore.

The MCU up until this release (2012) were really good, then they just stepped up to another level when this came out! This set the standard and sadly the DC universe is still trying to catch up.

Day 7

Scarface

Often emulated but never equaled, Brian DePalma’s cocaine fuelled violent gangster drama Scarface is as iconic a cult film as there is and is by far my most beloved movie and performance from my favourite actor Al Pacino.
I became obsessed with this movie from the first time I saw it and have probably watched it more times than Tony Montana says  “fuck” in it and has the most quotable lines of any movie. It’s also another movie I love to collect things on, ranging from original movie posters, signed Pacino memorabilia and soundtracks, to books and figurines. I even named my daughter Montana...

A bit of a cheat as with The Lord of the Rings trilogy earlier, but I'm including both The Raid and The Raid 2 this time.

Sci-fi 2.0 year zero.
Truly unseen when it hit theaters. Although the third part is clearly not as good as the previous two, the characters have become cult.
The chase on the highway in Reloaded (Matrix 2) is probably my favorite sequence. Trinity riding a motorcycle in the opposite direction between the cars with this electro-indus soundtrack: a whole symbol.

Avengers probably would have been on my list as well....but I'll stick with the superhero theme and go with the "original" classic Batman. This was one of the first (if not even the first) superhero movie...not counting that camp humor 60s batman obviously. But even as a kid the 60s Batman was bit too...well...campy. I do remember watching them though but there was no real "Oh this is some great stuff" vibe going on like lets say Star Trek TOS had...not at all...

But then came Tim Burton and his Batman...the darker, more sinister looking one that had great actors and great action and still great humor as well. And to this day this has remained THE BEST adaptation of Batman ever and Jack Nicholson is still the best Joker and Michael Keaton is THE Batman!

My Day 6, and it's another from India:

SHOLAY!

Action! Buddies! Romance! Singing! Dancing! Comedy! Drama! Guys getting the ever-loving crap beat out of them! More Singing and Dancing!

Some real top-shelf acting and plot make this perhaps *the* iconic Bollywood film of all time. And I absolutely love the hell out of it. If I had seen this when I was a kid, it would have likely imprinted me as deeply as Star Wars, if not more so. I so want to be 9 years old watching this and then running out to play with my buddies and insist on getting to be Jai, the cool guy of the buddy pair.

It's similar in overall description to The Seven Samurai - farmers need some help getting rid of the bandits - but that's where the fork in the road happens. When a movie goes through India, it gets some unique treatment, and have I mentioned that I'm just wild about that?

And it's got THE best ever road trip song, "Yeh Dosti". ANYONE who has ever seen the movie will sing along with it and then start talking about stuff and things with you like you both go way way back or something. It's phenomenal how fans of the film bond with each other. If you can talk straight about this film, you're a bona fide friend of the family to anyone else who loves it. Whenever I'm on the phone with guys from India, I sneak in a comment about Sholay and sing a few bars of "Yeh Dosti" and we're fast friends and they're doing favors for me and I'm helping them cut red tape and we're all working together so much more smoothly. It's a party.

So, yeah, I totally love me some Sholay. It's *always* the right time to watch Sholay!

Hehehe... foreign movies have always had an appeal for me. And getting hooked on Bollywood definitely skews my influences southward. But my next one will likely be one you're familiar with. :)

Day 8

Re-Animator

One of my favourite times of growing up in the 80’s was sitting around smoking dope with my mates and watching endless movies on VHS. We’d watch everything from famous classic movies to really bizarre movies like Videodrome and Liquid Sky as well as lots of B horror movies. One particular movie that really stuck with me though was the H.P Lovecraft inspired horror movie Re-Animator.
A perfect blend of suspenseful horror, extreme gore and black humour masterfully navigated from director Stuart Gordon and perfectly played out by actor Jeffery Combs as the determined medical student Herbert West who’s come up with a serum that reanimates dead bodies.

Re-Animator is one of my all time favourite movies and a must watch for any slightly twisted horror fan.

My day 1

This was the first movie that I remember being very important to me. It started a life long love affair with Rock N Roll.
Though the movie has some inaccuracies it still told an excellent story on the beginnings of Rock.
Buddy Holly is still one of my favorite artists.

The most recent film on my list is 2017s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. From the director who had previously brought us "In Bruges" and "Seven Psycopaths", and starring the Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson. The story of a mother unhappy with how the police have investigated the rape and murder of her daughter. Absolutely immense film, it won several Oscars but should have also won Film and Director (even though I also loved The Shape of Water which won those... it was a good year! ;) ).

Jeffery does an excellent job, perhaps one of his best. He has only been better in Star Trek Deep Space Nine IMHO.

I've got a couple of oldies on my list ;) :P . (I'm including The Green Mile in that oldies list :D )

But I didn't watch films to the extent I have in the last 15 years or so, and even then they were mainly on TV/Video. But many of the films I did see and enjoyed as a kid have already been selected by others (Alien, Terminator 2, Mad Max 2 etc.). But I only started going to the cinema regularly in 2005.

I do have a 70s film coming up, but I find old films often don't compare with new ones!

I was gonna say you’re certainly making up for it now. I’ve kinda gone in the opposite direction. Seems like my dad use to take us to the movies every 2nd week in my younger years, and a lot of them were a double bill, and then a little later on as I mentioned, I use to watch a lot of movies with my mates. These day’s I don’t watch a lot of movies at all. Might go to the cinema 3-4 times a year max and I’m lucky if I watch one movie a week at home.

When my kids were younger I took them to see a lot of the animated features but they’ve both long grown out of those. I took my son to see Once Upon A Time In Hollywood last year and he watched The Irishman on Netflix when it came out and he’s now totally hooked on Tarantino and Scorsese. Before that it was just Marvel, DC and Star Wars he was into.

Number 7...

As promised, this is one you ought to recognize:

I used to teach Economics and I would show this every year in my classes as a review. Kids would think, "Oh boy, movie day. I don't have to think!" But nooooooooooooooooooo! I would stop this sometimes as often as every 5 seconds to ask questions about what was going on in economic terms. Ants gathering grain? Employment! Ants standing around? Structural unemployment! Flick's gadget? Industrialization!

As it turned out, the story itself is laced with a political subplot about the machinations between Dot and Ada for control of the ant colony once their mother, the Queen, dies. Dot aligns with a paramilitary faction loyal foremost to her and creates a fascist vanguard. Whereas, on the other side, Ada makes a bid for power by appealing to the masses of workers, utilizing Flick for support in this endeavor. At the end of the film, although Ada is crowned, Dot is sure to intercept the crown of the heir apparent, fiendishly laughing in the knowledge that should anything "happen" to Ada, the right to rule falls to her. Very chilling end when I frame it like that and the students would typically castigate me for ruining the film for them.

:problem:

But they did really well on their AP Economics exams!  :smug:

Day 9

Full Metal Jacket

Master filmmaker Stanley Kubrick delivers a riveting, uncompromising and darkly funny view of the Vietnam War from boot camp through to the terrifying realities of war.
R. Lee Ermey is both hilarious and compelling as the ruthless drill instructor Gunnery Sergeant Hartman as well as other great performances from Mathew Modine as a wise-cracking young recruit and Vincent D’Onofrio as the mentally broken Private Leonard “Gomer Pyle” Lawrence. Full Metal Jacket is a captivating watch from start to finish and one of the most memorable and realistic portraits of war in movie history.

It was a close run thing between Life of Brian and The Holy Grail. I've never been a super huge Monty Python fan, but these two films are as good as any comedy films out there. Holy Grail has the better lines but is more a series of set-peices without too much plot, but Life of Brian has both:

I will always remember being with some friends and playing the movie in slow motion when Arnold comes out of the shed and throws the saw blade into the rebels head!!!  :death:

Well, I'm all out of movies. :problem:

Wait, no, I remember!

As a little kid, I would pretty much just sing along and cheer for the Fab Four and wish I was cool like George.

As I got older, I realized it was, underneath it all, a great anti-war movie. The ultimate conclusion was not to crush the enemy, but to *convert* the enemy, for true peace. And I love it for that and let that idea guide me. It's not a guide I follow unerringly, but it's a standard I try to follow.

Day 10(Last day)

Goodfellas

The great Martin Scorsese delivers a blend of hard-hitting realism and black comedy detailing the inner workings of the real Mafia. The cinematography, the editing, the masterful use of the roving camera and the eclectic soundtrack that spans the entire timeframe of the movie along with the amazing cast all playing their characters to the hilt make this movie absorbing and intoxicating and one of the greatest mob movies ever committed to film and one of the most influential films of the 90’s.

Goodfellas was one of the most impactful movies on me growing up, I watched it three times at the cinema when it came out and will always remain one of my all time faves.

Day 9 for me

A few years back I went through a period of catching up on the films in the IMDb top 250 that i had never seen (all except foreign language, any Charlie Chaplin film and some other real oldies). That's when I discovered a load of films from the 90s such as Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, The Green Mile and LA Connection, all amazing films and all in the running for my 10. LA Connection has a superb cast with many fine performances and of course a great story well told.

Damn I've fallen behind on this one a bit!

So Day 5:

I think this was my first Chavy Chase movie that I saw...either this or Spies Like Us.

The groovy feel of the movie, Faltermeyer's brilliant music and the theme song Bit By Bit were real ear worms back in the day...I remember I used to hum it all the time...just like Beverly Hills Cop but that's another story for another day ( ;) )

Growing up 80s movies especially action comedies were a big part of it and this one left a strong impression for sure.

I discovered this film manyyears after its release (1973) by hearing and reading glowing reviews.
I was discovering  Hard Rock/Heavy Metal world at the time. Satanic imagery fascinated me. The dread/Terror side (Epouvante in French) more than a more common side of Horror à la Evil Dead further increased its attraction.
My god, this image of Merrin facing the call of Pazuzu ...

Real Fear provoked by this evil vibes.
A movie that penetrates the person watching it.
I read the book after as well. Unpleasant feeling to see this big black book put on my bedside table for some days. so Special.

Day 9

I first encountered Depardieu in a film I watched for a History class in college, La Retour de la Martin Guerre (The Return of Martin Guerre). Fascinating, riveting performance, and I had to have more of his craft!

Then, in 1990, this came along and I was floored. It makes me emotional to even type about it, but such is my passion for how Depardieu played the man from Gascony with the huge... uh... panache! I can watch this movie any time, any day, and have it fit the occasion. The story and the performance are, in a word, complete.

There’s some movies I would’ve liked to include but couldn’t squeeze them in the 10 so I’m gonna do a bonus day with 5 movies worth a mention that were all quite impactful on me.

Day 11(Bonus Day)

The Warriors
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/03/TheWarriors_1979_Movie_Poster.jpg)
Great movie, a lot of memorable scenes. One of the first real bad ass movies I saw. I wanted to join a gang after watching it.

First Blood
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d6/First_blood_poster.jpg)
Very Impactful and original story, gripping action. One of Stallone’s best.

The Terminator
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/70/Terminator1984movieposter.jpg)
The sequel is better but it all started here. Ahead of its time and I much preferred Arnie as the Cyborg Assassin.

Highlander
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bc/Highlander_1986%2Cposter.jpg)
Immortal Warriors that can only be killed by beheading battle it out in modern NYC. Great sword action, brilliant and very likeable performance from Sean Connery and The Kurgan is such a bad ass. Queen’s soundtrack is killer!

King Of New York
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/36/King_of_new_york_ver1.jpg)
Dark, sinister and ultra cool gangster movie. Gang vs Gang vs Cops. One of my favourite Christopher Walken performances. Great supporting cast of which Laurence Fishburne is a standout.  Very underrated gangster movie.

The last day for me, and just to recap#:

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Changeling
The Green Mile
Inside Out
The Avengers
The Raid/The Raid 2
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Life of Brian
LA Confidential

and now #10

Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Guilermo del Toro's sequel to what was itself a great debut. It is full of imagination, humour and emotion, with some great actors including Doug Jones and Ron Perlman who is perfact as Hellboy. This film knocked my socks off when I first saw it in the cinema... and I've been a fan of del Toro ever since.

great ! I love Depardieu.
another french classic with the mighty Gérard , Jean De Florette and Manon des Sources.
In the second trailer , yes it's Emmanuelle Béart (23) 10 years before Mission Impossible and without botox . Just sublime .

Back to the Future is my youngest daughter's favorite, she's fanatic about the series.

And yes, I loved Jean de Florette and Manon!

And, speaking of France... I will have as my #10 film the great combination of Bruce Willis and Metal Hurlant, The Fifth Element.

Whenever I'm in a mood to watch all the Star Wars movies, I watch Star Wars and then this one and call it a day.

Speaking of Metal Hurlant, I'll also add Jodorowsky's Dune as a bonus film. The documentary outlines the greatest sci-fi epic never made. But so many ideas from it made their way into other films and bandes dessines that it's like that was a failed harvest that scattered seeds around the world.

So so so many great films already picked...

Day 6:

I have to go with my favourite of the Leone trilogy...this was the first one I saw and I remember wanting to be like Clint Eastwood...even made a poncho from my moms quilt...needless to say she wasn't happy that I cut a hole in the middle for my head...

But the movie is amazing non the less and Clint Eastwood is still one of my biggest heroes...and Ennio Morricone's music is sublime to say the least. One of the best composers in history along with John Williams....

I was a huuuuuge western fan when I was a kid...still am actually, but back then I absolutely loved them...anything with John Wayne was pretty much pure gold. And this particular one is probably my all time favourite western and one of my all time favourite movies. The cast, the action, the humor, the brilliant directing of the legendary Howard Hawks, the music...

Indeed! I think that's Dino's best on screen preformance too! He's got presense! And he and the Duke work so well together!

^^ You really do!

Day 8

One of my all time favourite action comedies. Eddie Murphy is SUBERB and Harold Faltermeyer's catchy as hell theme music...No way could I leave this one out

Day 9

One of my all time favourite movies...if not even THE favourite:

Michael Mann's absolute #1 masterpiece...awesome story, brilliant action and once in a lifetime cast

Day 10

This has to be my all time favourite movie sequel and one of only few sequels out there that match (or surpass) the original! Bruce Willis does his best ever preformance on this one just like Samuel L Jackson...their on screen chemistry is almost unmatched! And Jeremy Irons once again proves he can play one hell of a bad guy!

The action, the comedy and the music (especially the brilliant use of When Johnny Comes Marching Home!!) elevate this movie above most others.

Honestly though my list would have probably looked very different had I done it just by myself and not left out movies you lot chose.

The Thing, Alien, Star Wars, Goodfellas, Rambo First Blood and maybe Ghostbusters would have made it into my list as well.

Movies that nearly made the list are Leathal Weapon, Another 48 Hours, Maltese Falcon, The Searchers, The Big Sleep (Robert Mitchum version not the Bogart one!), Demolition Man and Total Recall.
