Title: Desert Island Discs
Post by: Zzzptm on May 04, 2020, 03:23:27 PM
The situation... you're going somewhere and it's remote. You can take only so much with you, and there's no MP3 or even CD player where you're going. Just a great turntable with awesome speakers and a very small record rack. The good news is that you can get any 25 albums you want, any condition, so long as they've already been made. You're going to be in this location for a long time, maybe years, maybe decades, so you need to make sure these albums are ones you want to listen to!

Double albums only count as one, but triples... that's pushing it. And the entities in charge can't allow boxed sets. They muttered something about this being about appreciation of individual albums rather than quantity...

... and if someone else posts an album you like, you don't have to bring it because we can borrow from each other!

How to win? Listen to the albums mentioned, all the way through if you can. The more that you enjoy, the more you've won!

So I'll start with...

Zzzptm's Desert Island Disc Number 1:

(https://img.discogs.com/7Jx-YwXX5n_39nZorpeFg9_8gX0=/fit-in/300x300/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(40)/discogs-images/R-433442-1495982218-5973.jpeg.jpg)

This is it. I've heard a ton of live albums, and this one is still the best of the lot, as far as I'm concerned. I still get tingles when I hear Blackmore touch the guitar for those power chords after Gillan says "Here's a song called Highway Star!" And if I bring other Deep Purple albums with these songs, so be it. I absolutely love these versions, they're simply brilliant. I'm playing it right now and nothing else matters, I'm having a great time with it.  :headbanger: :excited: :wootwoot: :partay: :batdance: :pub:  :beerbang:

As for condition, I want the vinyl to be perfect, original label release. The cover can be worn, like it is in the picture above. That will remind me of when I bought this album at a half-price book store, my first ever used record purchase. I want to be able to smell 1972 when I open up the album to the center photo spread.

^^I”ll be borrowing that off you at some stage. Might even dibs it first

Ok. 25 albums in 25 days will work perfectly to take the list through to the end of May.

Starting with this

A genuine 5 star classic and a must desert island album. Hopefully a quality set of headphones or an isolation room is included in this extended stay Z as listening to this album via those means is genuinely one of life’s joys.

Oh, absolutely. With very comfy chairs, ottomans, and bean bags.

And I think between the membership here, we'll cover quite a few bands' catalogs as a team. Just need to get the gang on board with this... :)

And, yes, I'll make the borrow of Paranoid. Gotta get my Rat Salad! Mmmmmm-mmmm-good!

That will be next in my playlist to-day, to which I will add...

(https://img.discogs.com/ebyb2_OBD712BA-NQBpFGAccooY=/fit-in/591x595/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-3858813-1391604267-5218.jpeg.jpg)

The original release with a full-blown newspaper interior. This is for a desert island, so I want plenty to read along with my listening pleasure. I just have to resist the temptation to do the dot-to-dot or crossword on the album itself... maybe keep some scratch paper handy so I can go back over things several times... and it's also got the full lyric sheet, in case I want to do some analysis of the proggy lyrics. With nothing to interrupt sides one and two except the flip of the record, I'll be just fine with this one. And that opening line never wears down... "Really don't mind if you sit this one out..."

My parents had this in their collection and I nicked it from them when I started getting into rock myself. I returned it when I bought a used version, again, with the full newspaper interior. Nothing less will do!

Can I clarify? Are we each doing 25 albums or are we doing 25 albums between us?

Yes, no boxed sets and, as JtS mentioned, let's not take an easy out with a best of collection. These are albums to sit down and have dinner and a date with, undivided attention sorts of things.

And this is 25 albums each.

... on that note, I was thinking that, in this place I've imagined, Billy Underdog is also there. Afterlife? He's a spirit? Twilight Zone episode? I don't know. I just know that he's there, and he's asked us to get 25 albums for him. We're welcome to borrow, and he'd invite us to do so, but he doesn't want us to load his allotment down with stuff he doesn't like - so no Sabbath with Dio! :) I think we should discuss what he'd bring before we commit anything to his part of the collection.

Back to the thread, love the Powerslave and the Rust in Peace, I'll let the others have fun with Death and Candlemass.

My 3rd album... hmmm... let's see... which one...

I should do my bit and bring another Sabbath album so we'll have it to share.

Sabotage.

(https://img.discogs.com/1hzFzZ6E8wIxHchNmqpWql4V0lY=/fit-in/600x605/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-13787034-1562426889-5048.jpeg.jpg)

GRRR!!! NO!!! Not the Beastie Boys!!! THE BLACK SABBATH SABOTAGE!!!

(https://img.discogs.com/uycpR8afnxbKWKusQfAO-9q8ZyM=/fit-in/600x600/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-380907-1448049540-6843.jpeg.jpg)

There, that's better! All I need is this album and a chair or beanbag to rest into... and the opening of "The Writ" will always blow me out of my seat when it arrives!

Although... if I could sneak the Beastie Boys single in the Sabotage jacket sleeve, I'd do it. I've always loved the riff in that song.

You know what would be a little more fun. If we just have 25 albums between us and each album either gets a yay or a nay from everyone else on whether it gets in. Majority wins type thing.

So far I would  go

Made in Japan  :headbanger:

Thick as a Brick  :redcard:

Paranoid    :headbanger:

Powerslave  :headbanger:

Rust in Peace  :headbanger:

Death Magic Doom  :headbanger:

Death Live in LA  :headbanger:

Sabotage  :headbanger:

Everyone can bring one album that’s not welcome by majority

Thoughts?

We could go with, "The more you bring albums others want to borrow, the more you get to borrow from others." By that token, if Thel an I both want to borrow Powerslave, I need to get in line behind Thel and maybe listen to Thick as a Brick while I wait... :D

... or maybe borrow that NMA album. I'm giving it a go and liking it! +1 to KDC for that suggestion.

Re: Metallica... I was thinking of Ride the Lightning myself...

And I really did like the NMA platter, we're going to have some discs that are shared by everyone and some that are shared by a few. Don't know if we'll have any not shared at all... but I won't be shocked if we do.

(https://img.discogs.com/jwSTpKG74M6Jk4W9X52p_WLYblw=/fit-in/600x605/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-436929-1471873836-5053.jpeg.jpg)

My 5th Desert Island Disc is Ship Ahoy by The O'Jays. Some mighty mighty Philly Soul on this excellent album. Every song is full-length, no radio edits. Talkin' about over 7 minutes of "For the Love of Money". Some awesome talent in every corner of the album - the O'Jays sharp vocals, MFSB's on-point musicianship, tight songwriting, smooth as silk production. Even if I'm the only one spinning it, I can play it over and over and over and it just keeps getting better.

I'll let Billy have the honors of bringing that. I'll replace it with Heaven and- er, well, that's a Dio era Sabbath. Wouldn't do to slip it in the place of an Ozzy one.

So I'll make it...

Nice to see the classical selections manifest, I'll be happy to partake of the borrowing thereof.

So I'll add one of my absolute favorites: Previn conducting the LSO in Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. Difficult to spell, but easy to get wrapped up in enjoyment:

(https://img.discogs.com/vS4BfSYwvZzkGgzqsSSavy4p8FA=/fit-in/300x300/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(40)/discogs-images/R-9936031-1488830004-9807.jpeg.jpg)

I've gone through several recordings of the symphony, and this one, this one, is the one I treasure most.

That makes:
1. Made in Japan
2. Thick as a Brick
3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (letting Billy bring Sabotage)
4. Rainbow Rising
5. Ship Ahoy
6. Heaven and Hell
7. Scheherazade

The aptly entitled Melanie C album would be a must have for me...and the lucky bit would be I don't think I ever need to borrow it to any of you lot!  >:D

I'd probably borrow it a) to piss you off :P and b) she always was the only one who could sing out of the Spice Girls, she could have made a good rock singer.

Giving her work a go, went with her "Who I Am" single that recently released. Proper nice club track, there, and yes, she's got a great voice.

You've turned me on to something, Charger. Looks like I'll try to borrow that album, too!

Haha! Well damn!

Also I'd like to point out that Emma Bunton has a great voice too so Melanie wasn't the only "proper" singer in the group. They've also done some tracks together since as well.

Talking about Melanie's rockier side I find this one to be quite brilliant...in fact I think this is my favourite song of hers...great acoustic rock tune:

I'm staying with the milder rock theme for now.

I know that there'd be some mild tempered arguments occationally on the island so at times it would be necessary to Bury The Hatchet!

^ Trying out the first track... fun stuff, might give the rest a spin later today.

1. Made in Japan
2. Thick as a Brick
3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (letting Billy bring Sabotage)
4. Rainbow Rising
5. Ship Ahoy
6. Heaven and Hell
7. Scheherazade
8. Mountain Live: The Road Goes Ever On

My wife bought this for me for my birthday soon after we met, and vyn's last share immediately reminded me of Leslie West's guitar tone. I prefer this live album to the later one from Mountain. It feels warmer, friendlier, more intimate. "Waiting to Take You Away" is a real gem and the live version of "Nantucket Sleighride" is the best I've heard.

That's another great live album, there.

Time for my Day Nine choice... so far, I've had:

1. Made in Japan
2. Thick as a Brick
3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (letting Billy bring Sabotage)
4. Rainbow Rising
5. Ship Ahoy
6. Heaven and Hell
7. Scheherazade
8. Mountain Live: The Road Goes Ever On

Gotta get back to my DP roots:

The immortal Machine Head. Yes, 4 of the 7 songs are already on Made in Japan. But these are the studio versions, and they're just as magical to me as the live ones. When the weather turns chilly, I put this one on and enjoy. It was made in the winter, and I happened to buy it in the winter, so I always associate it with cold weather. If we're on a tropical desert island, I'll play it whenever someone cranks up the AC too much. If we're on a desert island in the far south Pacific or Indian Ocean, it'll be plenty cold for this one, no worries.

But it's just such a wonderful feel, listening to this album. Such a smoothness to it, never gets old. Each memorable note thrills me to this day.

Adventures in Utopia may have been Utopia's biggest seller - and it's a great, great album - but I prefer the one just before that, 1977's Oops! Wrong Planet. It's a tight set of songs, especially in the wake of all the prog that went before that, and most of them have a wry sense of humor that itches me where I scratch. The tunes from this album are always popping into my head, even if I haven't heard them in a long, long time. The songs are definitely in a power pop mold, but the band are so skilled, every one of them sounds fresh and the lyrics are excellent. It might be one that only I listen to, but then again, we've had some interesting musical surprises in this thread.

My first-ever Rory Gallagher album and my favorite of all of them, as it happens. Love to let this one ride all the way through, with the fast songs giving away to the gut-wrenching blues anthems closing each side, "Overnight Bag" and "Fuel to the Fire". And this Irishman's beat up old guitar reminds me of a local hero whose album I certainly want to make my #12 and I'll recommend to one and all to give it a good listen, as you're likely to never have heard it before.

EDIT: Loved The Stranglers, KDC and I had fun with The Talking Heads, Vyn. Thanks for recommending something new to me. Thanks also to Charger and JtS for reminding me about my musical old friends. :)

You probably do not know anything at all about Bugs Henderson. He was a local guitar hero here in Dallas and Texas in general. He turned down a big record deal because he didn't want that rock and roll lifestyle to destroy his family or health. He put plenty of bread on the table, playing in clubs all over the southwest and packing in those houses when he did.

There are a few recordings of his gigs, but this one is the first and the best. This album is why I think "Top 100" lists will never tell the truth because not everybody voting on them knows of guys like Bugs, playing their hearts out under the radar, and showing everyone in the crowd just how it's done.

Bugs passed away a few years ago, but this album always lives on for me.

Give it a listen, I strongly encourage it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyP4tlMf5dE

Got some awesome choices up there, definitely ones I'm putting my name on the sign-up sheet for borrowing...

1. Made in Japan
2. Thick as a Brick
3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (letting Billy bring Sabotage)
4. Rainbow Rising
5. Ship Ahoy
6. Heaven and Hell
7. Scheherazade
8. Mountain Live: The Road Goes Ever On
9. Machine Head
10. Oops! Wrong Planet
11. Photo Finish
12. Bugs Henderson: At Last
13. Purpendicular

I only know this on CD, but it's available on 2 discs of 180g vinyl, so I'm snagging those and taking it to the island. The vinyl also includes "Don't Hold Your Breath", so it's a done deal as that song is my favorite from this most excellent of albums. This is a happy album overall, an honest album, a welcoming album. It proves that there is most certainly light at the end of the tunnel. And even if there's another tunnel ahead, there will be light at the end of that one, as well.

That's one of the nicest things about this thread, we're all going to cover each other, so we're getting more than just 25 discs to listen to. :)

Y'all know I can get along fine without the Slayer, but I'll be glad to bend my ears to Thin Lizzy.

1. Made in Japan
2. Thick as a Brick
3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (letting Billy bring Sabotage)
4. Rainbow Rising
5. Ship Ahoy
6. Heaven and Hell
7. Scheherazade
8. Mountain Live: The Road Goes Ever On
9. Machine Head
10. Oops! Wrong Planet
11. Photo Finish

13. Purpendicular
14. Viva Terlingua

The album is from Texas, so it may be bigger than others we've seen so far.  :smug:

Back in 1973, there were a bunch of hippies down in Austin that were sick and tired of being told to cut their hair and to change out of their blue jeans and to play by Nashville's rules. So they shot the finger in the direction of "all that Nashburg muck" and made their own damn albums. They sang each others' songs and had a great time of it. They got called a lot of names, and one of the better ones to stick was "Texas Outlaw Country". It was a lot more electric than Nashville at the time - they had guitar solos and what-not - but they weren't so wild as to be Lynyrd Skynyrd. They were still country, but they were country on their own terms.

And I love 'em, I do.

Now, maybe nobody else needs an album as in-your-face Texian as this one, but I sure do. Especially for the closer, "London Homesick Blues." That song will get me to feel proud and homesick and happy and full of memories and tear up a little every damn time I play it, because it's about me every time I'm not in Texas. "Desperados Waiting for a Train" is a true classic from Guy Clark, one of America's best songwriters, ever.

This album is Texas' musical Declaration of Independence. Not that it needed sayin', we just like to secede down here. We don't like staying out on our own, just let us secede for a day or two every so often, and then we'll be back to where we was before. Every song I either sing along with or cry along with, whichever. But I can taste the BBQ down at Black's in Lockhart when I hear this album. I see the bluebonnets in April out on the Hill Country roads. I pass around the turn just south of Gonzales on 183 where the coastal plain opens out from the hills. I walk up to where the Half-Price Books used to be up on Guadalupe. I'm driving carefully through those consarned speed traps in Waco so I can get to Gerik's Czech Bakery in West. It's a breakfast taco in Rockport and an enchilada in San Antonio. It's the Cadillac Ranch outside of Amarillo and that gawdawful long stretch of road to the Valley on 281. It's the sign just after the New Mexico border that says "El Paso 14 / Orange 982" or whatever the brain-stunning miles to Orange are. It's the Whataburger on the "good" side of the border in Texarkana. It's the relief of rolling past the "Welcome to Texas" sign, knowing we only have half our miles ahead of us now, getting home. :)

There's a reason Guy Clark is played a lot in my house. Even my headbangin' son and daughter who's allergic to country will play him. Simply put, he's an American national treasure. This album is like a documentary put to music, and the songs always resonate with me. And, yes, I used to live on the South Coast of Texas in the same town Guy lived in, Rockport. I love this album not because of that connection, but mostly for the title tune. It captures both the life in that town as well as a stoic worldview all in a matter of minutes. The rest of the album is great to sing along with and that's worth something.

I met Guy once, back when I lived in Austin, and although I didn't say hardly more than "Thank you very much for the music, sir," and I got a smile and a humble "thank you" in return, it's one of the happiest moments of my young life, shakin' that man's skilled, hard, and precise hand.

Not sure Charger will be happy, as I've gone with Iced Earth's Framing Armageddon: Something Wicked Part 1 rather than Night of the Stormrider. But in my defence I've only listened to the latter once since I got it a couple of weeks back. But Framing Armageddon has long been one of my favourite albums, my only dissapointment was that for part 2 Ripper was sacked and Matt Barlow returned, and Part 2 was a real let down.

I've got to have the musical equivalent of BBQ - low heat, long time, lots of flavor. I'm very certain that all of Led Zeppelin was spinning this record as they composed stuff that would make its way to Physical Graffiti. Not that that's the reason I want this album - just that it's been a very influential disc in music, and it's not hard to hear why. Great arrangements of horns, mellotron, and other instruments when needed, but there's always a big bass sound in them to put a floor underneath Mavis Staples' amazing voice and Pop Staples' incredible guitar work. The group left behind the Gospel when they went popular, but they didn't leave behind the message in their socially charged and uplifting lyrics. They don't curse the darkness, they light a candle and this album always takes me higher.

I pick this one precisely for reasons some rank it low among Steely Dan releases - the snark of it all. But I love letting this just play all day and find the songs very inspirational. So it goes in the collection.

Who knew the hippies could do folk-rock so well? They drop the crazy experimentation and get serious about roots music on this album, which features some of Hunter's best lyrics with Ripple, Sugar Magnolia, Box of Rain, and the immortal Truckin'.

I only picked 1 Sabbath album... all the others I would have picked had been nabbed by others! But I got a GZR album in there which kinda counts as a Sabbath one. No one seems to have picked the debut!

There needed to be one "down-home" disk in my set, and I had it narrowed down to this, It'll Shine When It Shines by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils and Struttin' My Stuff from Elvin Bishop. So yesterday I sat myself down in my listening chair, in my listening room and spun all three. And here we have my last pick.

As I gaze at 24 records nestled cozily in a protective box, I slide Wet Willie right on in with them. Taking a deep breath, I have a sense of sadness at being relegated to a deserted island. But it is only fleeting, and disappears as soon as I notice it. Fuck this world gone crazy, I'm ready to rock and roll!

Cranking it out right now and it's a resounding "hell yes!" for bringing this Lovecraft-tinged blues-metal classic. The vinyl got sold out, so I'll have to score my copy from a collector, but that's the way I'll have to have it. If I haven't mentioned it before, this is my favorite Wo Fat album, can't leave home without it.  :smug:

I'm hoping you lot will give it a listen, because I'd rather not just be the only one enjoying it. Great EVERYTHING on this album, one of the best of the best in my collection.

A real sweet treat from the 70s. Very mellow and trippy and heavy and stuff. The whole thing just WORKS, man. Now I'm ready to go!

As for Billy's bag... it's got the first two Iron Maiden albums in it, along with Sabotage. Pretty sure he'd have a Prudence album or two, which I know I'd borrow, along with some Black Metal that I wouldn't. But Thel would. :smug:

He might also bring some Amadou & Mariam, maybe their great Dimanche à Bamako album. I'd hope for that, for sure, and let all his other imagined picks be for the rest of the gang. :)

I'm not doing it now because I have to take out the trash here in real life. :(
