This was a very well made bio of the great Queen and in particular one of the greatest rock singers to ever live, Mr Freddy Mercury.

My absolute favorite of the prequels, I have a soft spot for this one. It is actually my third favorite Star Wars movie just behind New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. 8/10
I haven’t seen The Hard Way since it originally came out. I remember liking it but seem to remember Woods constant scorning of Fox’s character did get a bit tiresome. I can generally watch and enjoy anything James Woods is in. One of my favourite actors.

Thel - I do recommend Picard, have you seen it yet?
I have seen bits and pieces of it. What I have seen does not impress me much, but I will give it a chance based on your recommendation. I despise ST Discovery, it so cringe and the writing and acting are abysmal. The worst thing that has ever been done in the Star Trek universe.

Agreed. I've seen one episode of Discovery and that alone made me want to puke.
As far as Picard goes...well based on the clips that's a killer...and ofcourse it's hard not to love it with Sir Patrick! As soon as it's available for bluray I'll be getting it for sure!
Anthrax was an SF band??? I thought they were NYC.Yes they were from NYC but they still had a connection with those bands especially Metallica playing some shows in NY with them and hanging out during the recording of Kill ‘Em All, they were on the same label back then.
VanDyke and Rooney steal every one of their scenes.

A Soviet made film about partisan fighters in Belarus during World War II. It primarily follows a young teenage boy and uses camera jingo-jango to tell the story of the partisan fighter's struggle to cope, understand, survive, and repulse the Nazi's who were wholesale slaughtering everyone and everything.
It is a war movie. But unlike any war movie I have ever seen.
Though the accouterments of war are necessary to the story, it's more about what real hatred looks like and that not everyone is down with that shit. I was left disturbed, which was a good thing.
It is straight up fucking hard core.
^^^ as I posted earlier in this thread I just found that this "zombie" movie falls apart about half way through and I just could not wait for it to end. Just my opinion though and my rating was a point below yours as I did really like the first half.

A civilian diving team is enlisted to search for a lost nuclear submarine and face danger while encountering an alien aquatic species. Effective plot with some fine actors and great special fxs. 8.5/10
DIRTY HARRY
San Francisco Inspector Harry Callahan faces a very dangerous foe in the form of a psychopathic sniper killer who is blackmailing the city for ransom or he'll keep killing people. Harry goes on a mission to stop him but it turns out to be not so easy when the killer kidnaps young girl and he is forced to use questionable tactics to get the location for the dying girl, only to later find out she was already dead. Things turn on their head when the killer victimizes himself and later takes a whole busload of children hostage. Harry has no choice but to face the killer alone.
One of the biggest classics in the crime movie genre and something of an originator to the tough guy cops.
Clint Eastwood absolutely shines in the lead role as does Andy Robinson as the psychotic killer.
Don Siegel's direction is absolutely flawless in his magnificent camera angles and making the beautiful city of San Francisco more than just the back drop for the action.
Lalo Schifrin's understated music is the icing on the near perfect cake.
There is a reason why Dirty Harry is one of the greatest chracters in whole of movie history and why it solidified Clint Eastwood as a true superstar and actor with near unmatchable charisma.

In the twenty-fifth century, a time when people have designations instead of names, a man, THX 1138, rebels against his rigidly controlled society. First time seeing this 1970 film. A bit slow at times, but may have been more effective back then. 6/10
I think that I am going to get an Amzon Prime membership again so I can see the ones about Death and Overkill. I do not care for LOG, as I find them seriously lacking.Cool! You’ll really enjoy those, especially “Death by Metal” if you’re a Death fan.

A group of friends venture deep into the streets of New York on a rescue mission during a rampaging monster attack. The entire film is shot by one of the friends who was recording a party. The perspective is interesting, but the herky jerkyness that is a result of this technique can be a bit annoying. Cool looking monster, though. 7/10

in my opinion, The Visit and Split are two very good movies which prove the return of his inspiration !

This was the best of the Hammer films that I have seen yet. The only thing that I did not like was there was not much in the character development department. 8/10
Frequency.
In spite of the Yahoo thing that requires some explanation 20 years later, the film itself is a well-made sci-fi whodunit with a great father-son buddy angle. This film is still fresh after 20 years, and I love it.
^^^ I did truly enjoy the movie but it just seemed to me that some of the characters did not have much in the way of development. One minor criticism is that Dracula should have been more prominent in the movie. Other than those blemishes it is a compelling and creepy film. You're welcome. :beerbang: This was the 4th Dracula film Hammer made with Lee as the Count. He is much more prominent in the 1st 2 films. So by now, with his character well established, Hammer focused more of the story on others. This becomes obvious when you see the films in the order in which they were made.
I must thank you again for introducing the Hammer line of movies to me. I had never heard of them before you mentioned it at BSO.

I was never a "hard core" fan of the Star Wars films, but I enjoy them well enough. Rogue One is one of the 3 best films in the franchise.
I felt Force Awakens -- while very watchable -- just riffed too much on the first film. The Last Jedi is probably the best of the Disney trilogy and The Rise of Skywalker was fine if nothing special.
This the best of the Disney Star Wars movies that I have seen. It is true I have not seen Last Jedi or Rise Of Skywalker but those movies are considered horrible by many a Star Wars fans. 7.5/10
Sure this Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin apparition isn't the most successful graphically but we still notice great progress on these digital personifications. Ditto for Princess Leia in the final scene.

Sad to hear that since that is the worst thing that has ever been released under the Star Wars banner...absolutely horrible movie. The digital Peter Cushing was an atrocity and the lack of humor was totally unacceptable.
It looked like star wars and it sounded like star wars but most importantly though it certainly did NOT feel like Star Wars.

Hadn't yet seen this, decided now's the time. The synthesizer music tracks were distracting, but the rest of the film was a powerful buddy film set against the backdrop of the debacle of Gallipoli.
Gallipoli is one of the great Australian films of all time. Definitely check it out.
The Omen along with Psycho were two movies that genuinely scared the hell out of me as a kid.

I haven't seen a whole load of films since the lockdown forced cinemas to close in March. When they did re-open in the late summer there wasn't much to see and I was still wary about going to places with crowds (even socially distanced)... and then they closed again!
At the beginning of last year I did see some good films -- 1917, JoJo Rabbit, Emma and the Pixar film Onward. I did see Tenet in the cinema in August and while it is solid it's not one of Nolan's best (but if you like Inception you might like this one too).
Many films due out last year have either been rescheduled or went to streaming, some I have access to and some I don't. I saw the recent Pixar release of Soul the other week (solid but I prefer Onward), but that's about it. I have seen New Mutants on rental recently and I have the latest Bill and Ted's on the rental list along with Wonder Woman 1984 and The Croods 2.
Of the less mainstream films which have had some buzz I'm looking forward to seeing The Father, Mank, The Sound of Metal and Nomadland when they become available.

Wow! I don’t think I can take some of you guys serious ever again when it comes movie opinions.
Somehow a comment I typed for this thread vanished. I'm also not a fan of Godfather's plodding parts at the start. 30 minutes for a stoopid wedding? Fuggeddaboudit.
^ OK, that helps in getting the wedding scene. But then it's a question of how much information does a viewer need to have in order to understand part of a movie? If it's too much outside knowledge, one has to ask if there's a better, more direct way of conveying the information? 30 minutes of subtle detail, as you've seen, goes right over the heads of folks not prepared to absorb it all. Thus the need for a re-watch. :smug:
Hi Typhon, good to see you back!Thank you, my English foe, I mean friend. :pub:
Great to see you back Typhon!
I CAN understand what you are saying there buddy but it still doesn't change the fact that the scene (like most of the movie) just drags on waaaay too much.
In truth I think that The Godfather is more of an Art-film than actual piece of entertainment. I've never been a fan of artsy movies...but if one is that is more than okay by me. :)
Artsy, smartsy. You're one of those movie fans who has gotten too use to the quick action shoot-them-ups with a little fantasy nonsense thrown in. This, over time, can lower your standards, which makes a realistic film that actually tells a story less bearable. Time to step back to reality, buddy. :)
Not often do I sit down anymore to watch a movie, and I cannot remember anything made prior to 1985 that I haven't seen that I want to see. Here is a recommendation for you. Trust me, it's good.

That is pretty damn cool outfit! Is that a real sword too?
Sword is real. Here is a better view of it. I'm talking with one of the musketeers on duty. On the far left you can see His Majesty The King.
(https://i.postimg.cc/mZXBq0X9/King_Richard_s_Faire__09_(1).jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I'm curious Typhon, is the full beard set something you had, or was it grown (or stuck on ;) ) especially for the show?
I don't know how authentic all that clothing is, but it does look great!
I'm concerned about the woman in the yellow/orange hat, far too close to the pointy end of the sword!
That is just so cool. And having some of the story behind the outfit adds to the coolness, thanks for sharing. Now I'm wondering what would be other great swashbuckling movies to add to the Three/Four Musketeers - Depardieu's version of Cyrano de Bergerac is one I would passionately advocate.

My kids came home from that one absolutely livid that Disney had gotten their money for that movie that basically took the whole Star Wars saga and dropped a 16-ton weight on it. I have chosen not to watch it.
We last watched the Amazon version of Cinderella. It was more fun than I expected it to be, especially the moments with James Acaster, Romesh R., and James Corden. I'd much rather it been a movie about the 3 mice and all the crazy stuff they did as humans. Having said that it was more fun than expected, it was still something of a chore to get through, but my family enjoyed it.
I'm going to watch The Man Who Would be King either today or tomorrow. I just bought it and It's been too long since I last saw it.
Over the last couple of weeks we saw Once Upon a Time in America -- the rental company sent us the film in two parts a week apart as it is nearly 4 hours long! This mobster film is set over several decades (1920s thru1960s), and stars Robert De Niro, James Woods, Elizabeth McGoven, Treat Williams, Tuesday Weld, Burt Young and Joe Pesci.
The story recounts the rise of Noodles, Max and their gang from youths to men, and at the end it catches up with Noodles in the 60s. The story is told in time split sequences going from 1920 to the early 30s and back again. It's violent, uncompromising but a compelling story, very well shot and directed by Sergio Leoni -- his last film.
I can't imagine how bad this film was when first released with cuts to shorten it to about 2:20 in length, it feels like a lot of story is missing in this 3:49 version. Apparently after principal photography was complete they had about 8 hours of material. Leoni wanted to release it as 2, 3 hour films but the studio wouldn't here of it.
Anyway, a very good film, with some minor flaws. 8.5/10
Re. "Israeli nuke falls into wrong hands, only Jack Ryan can resolve this one" - OK, I laughed at that premise, knowing what I know about both Israeli nukes and Israeli intelligence. A Pakistani, Indian, even Russian nuke falling into the wrong hands, that I can accept. Having said that, I wouldn't see any of those nations turning to an outsider to pick up the pieces and put them back together again. But an *Israeli* one? Same country that has *Mossad* for its spy agency?
:haha1:
Yeah no.
Sometimes Oscar winners are real head-scratchers. More about Hollywood politics and posturing than actual best-ness.

Not sure I would describe Timothee Chalamet as an unknown! He may not have been in films that will interest you. I've seen him in a couple of films -- Christopher Nolan's "Interstella" and Greta Gerwigs "Lady Bird". And he was Oscar nominated for "Call Me By Your Name" (a film I have little interest in seeing). I would agree that this is his first leading role in a big budget blockbuster!

Interesting... I've never even heard of him...granted I haven't followed the Oscars anymore as closely in the past few years but I usually do remember the nominee's names though...although I have never heard of Call Me By Your Name either....

The main problem with the Oscars is that they nominate films/actors which are rarely on the publics radar. And on those odd occasions films which the public do like get nominations they rarely win. It's no wonder that audience figures are dropping. It's only really Joker recently which had big box office that won any awards and even that divided the Batman fans!
I went to see the new Ghostbusters: Afterlife film recently. Starring Paulk Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace with cameos from the Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd and Ernie Hudson.
Callie's father we discover is Egon Spengler although he deserted his family many years ago and bought a secluded farmhouse in a remote mining community. After his death, cash strapped Callie (Coon) and her kids (Wolfhard and Grace) are evicted and have to relocate to the old farm to sort out their lives. The town though is experienceing unexplained earthquakes which has attracted the attention of Grooberson (Rudd) a seizmologist. Shortly thereafter the kids find Spenglers hidden workshop and the ECTO-1 Ghostbusters car, and manage to release an entity stored in a trap.
This is a reboot of the origiinal films and completely ignores the events in the 2016 reboot. It's a little slow to start with, basically the family moving into the farmhouse, meeting people and making friends. It's the second half of the film where the action kicks off and the film comes to life. A pretty good film but not setting any new standards. 7.5/10
^ sad you didn't like it, I had some good fun with the film.
I’ve never been able to sit through any of those Bill & Ted movies…So cheesy and just not my type of humour.^ sad you didn't like it, I had some good fun with the film.
I just could not buy into what I was seeing. I literally felt a great cringe seeing Keanu acting like he was mentally still a teenager. He just could not pull it off and I also really disliked the majority of the acting from the others. It should have been made 10 to 15 years ago, at least in my opinion.

I've never seen Top Gun.
^^^^^^
If your girlfiend gets frightened even a little bit by scary movies, then she will be holding on to you a lot during BWP. I don't get scared all that much, but that one was pretty effective. >:D
I’ve never watched a Harry Potter movie and don’t intend to.
@Kilo, how has such a movie buff like you never watched Raging Bull? I’m staggered and bewildered :twitch:
Top Gun Maverick is getting rave reviews
^^^
Just for the record I've never seen, Raging Bull, Gandhi, Gone with the Wind or Once Upon a Time in the West. Iv'e never seen a Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street or Blair Witch Project.
I’ve never watched a Harry Potter movie and don’t intend to.Ditto. :beerbang:
Blair Witch Project on the other hand was absolutely horrible...a nightly trip to the toilet is more scary than that garbage. What the what!

I was just thinking "I don't know that one", but I realise it has only just come out on Streaming. I'll have to put it on the watch list... but that's quite a long list!
And Pilou Aspaek did make a good villain in the last couple of series of Game of Thrones.
Ahem... well... err... actually, I never finished watching it, it was just not my sort of film at all!
I'll see myself out!
Killers of the Flower Moon does look good as Jack says, it hasn't got a release date in the UK yet.Its scheduled to premiere at the Cannes film festival in May. Probably a summer release will follow.
@Thel
Couldn't agree more. The last one is my favourite film of all time!
@Zzzptm
That's just wrong!
^^^ love that movie and I just recently got it on Blu-ray. John Candy was such a loss.
Slightly unexpected, but the rental company have just dispatched The French Dispatch (BluRay)... despite being unavailable!!
^^^
I didn't mind them even though the plots got a little silly/contrived at times. Hanks was indeed a good choice for Langdon.
One thing about that Fast X is that there's a very pretty Finnish stunt driver in it...she does a lot of the car stunts in the film.

Roger Moore is the greatest 007
IMHO
Reading about why Connery left Bond-ship... he wasn't on speaking terms with Broccoli during the filming of You Only Live Twice and walked away from the role
I love all 6 of the original Star Trek movies but #5 is the worst. I still think that it is a great idea that was not realized.
DUNE
Denis Villeneuve takes on the mammoth task of telling the story of Frank Herbert's classic. The story begins with House Harkonnen losing the hold of planet Arrakis and the production of the precious Spice to the House Atreides. But everything is not as it seems and soon the house Atreides is brought down and the battle for the future of Dune begins as the Duke Leto is killed and his son Paul and his concubine a Bene Gesserit witch Jessica flee to the desert to look for protection and alliance with the native people Fremen.
Paul who is believed to be the messiah, the chosen one begins to see his greater fate through series of visions and dreams brought on by his Bene Gesserit side.
The story itself is massive and ofcourse cannot be told in a single movie (and this was meant to be a movie series with sequal/s coming) but this does drag on a bit too much. Villeneuve takes more than 2,5 hours to tell the same ammount of story than the 2000 miniseries told in it's first 90 minute episode! It is rather strange. This could have easily been edited down to that same length without losing too much story.
The acting was very good and even the bold choice to cast an unknown to the role of Paul Atreides did not hurt as Timothee Chalamet did a fine job as did Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica. Bigger stars were actually given a much smaller roles like Dave Bautista as Rabban Harkonnen, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck and Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho...but as to be expected the grand role of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen played by Stellan Skarsgard took the center stage when ever he was on screen...sadly his scenes were far too short and few...but his make up was great, could barely recognize him. The under use of the Baron was a bit of a travesty as he is one of THE great villains.
One thing that irked me the most though was the pronounciations of the names...especially Harkonnen...but there has been a lot of debate on how they are pronounced although some recordings of Herbert telling the right way do exist.
The visuals were great, the Harvesters looked the part, and the thopters were very cool but the Worm was also rather under used which was a shame. But we should se much more of them in part 2...hopefully.
Also the Space Guild Navigators were never shown...and they are a rather large part of the story...again hopefully more in the next part.
The movie did justice to the story but it did drag on bit too much for my liking. It felt that Villeneuve was putting bit too much effort in trying to create a space opera rather than a proper sci-fi epic. Also for a budget of over 160 million one would have expected bit more grandious space visuals. Now too much time was spent on close quarters.
It had much good but also bit too much fluff. But it did make me anxious for part 2.

Those first dozen movies that Steven Seagal made still stand up and they were quite different from what had come before
Nowadays he is in the most horrible straight to DVD movies
strap on my toy gun holster anymore and go out shooting sticks I pretend were dynamite!
strap on my toy gun holster anymore and go out shooting sticks I pretend were dynamite!
That's the best part!
Well, for me, the short bits with famous famous actors helping along the nobody privates was the distraction.

Guardians 3 was definitely the best of the post Endgames films (a top3 MCU film for me), but there were other quite good ones. I enjoyed Black Widow, Shang Chi and Doctor Strange 2. I also liked the Loki and Hawkeye TV series. And while I know it was a poor film I also enjoyed elements of Thor 4!
Final catchup!
Thunderbolts* - The most recent MCU film, starring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lewis Pullman. [IMDb] After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes must go on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.
This is a pretty good MCU effort, it's not challenging the top 10, but is much better than many of the latest MCU films. 8/10
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning - The (possibly) last M:I film starring Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff. A continuation from events seen in Dead Reckoning a couple of years ago, the team need to track down the AI known as The Entity -- it having infiltrated the defences of most of the countries with nuclear weapons and when it has them all it will use them!
Another globe trotting thriller, with action set pieces in abundance. It's a good movie, there's too much exposition in the first 45 minutes and at 2 hours 50 it's a good 30 minutes too long. 8/10
Ballerina - An action thriller which has little to do with ballet. Set in the world of John Wick, the events take place in the same time frame as John Wick 3. This stars Ana de Armas, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, Angelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne and a cameo from Keanu Reeves.
Orphaned as a child Eve (de Armas) is sent to be trained by The Director (Huston) who assess if she has a talent as a Ballet dancer... or an assassin! That's the last we see of the ballet! She is sent to defend a socialite from some bad people where she finds clues about the death of her father which takes us off on the main plot. During the film we visit The Continental Hotel where we meet Winston (McShane), Charon (Reddick), as well as an encounter with John Wick himself. I rather enjoyed this, not sure where I would rank it with the other JW films, but it is a worthy addition. 8.5/10
Of note, this is probably Lance Reddick's last film credit as he died in 2023, but it just goes to show how long some films take to get made. He was pretty much perfect as Charon.
Never heard of that movie before Typhon but I am interested in it as I love the rocky movies especially the original movie
THE ACCOUNTANTThanks for the review. I'll have to check this one out.
... but the slowness in the beginning half could have used better pacing.Well the guy's an accountant, not James Bond. :))

The films are masterpieces, and with any sketch show there's often a hit or miss with each sketch, but MP had a pretty good hit rate! ;)
There's a movie I have never even heard of! Damn! Sounds like something I need to check out!
Talking of Bullitt... I have the rental DVD and looking to watch it tonight!
I tried to find The Seven Ups but it's not available for streaming ANYWHERE! Bugger!
I have been watching some Hammer Horror movies lately for the spooky season
I see that you Typhon are a
fan of Hammer and I believe that you where the one who introduced me to them on the old website
I really enjoyed the ones with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee
Peter Cushing is one of my all time favourites!
There's one movie that I have been searching for years but haven't been able to find called Island Of Terror which I saw when I was a kid on tv and it was truly scary and atmospheric! Wish I could see that one again one day!
Don't think that one was Hammer's work though...

A strange meteor hits and creates a bizarre new ever expanding bubble where rules of conventional nature do not apply and where people sent into investigate do not return. A new team of all women scientists is sent in to figure out just what is going on. They come across some strange mutations and beasts and discover they themselves are changing into something new.
Natalie Portman and Jennifer Jason Leigh lead the expedition in somewhat clichéish mannor and just kind of go through the motions.
The movie was marketed as a Sci-Fi horror movie that was supposed to have some great and twisted creatures...well it had none of that. The "horror" elements were bland and lackluster and the effects for the most part were incredibly cheapish and made with bad CGI. There was very little action and most certainly no suspense what so ever and the ending was absolutely ridiculous.
Natalie Portman was the only good thing about the movie and it was clear she wasn't very interested either.
The basic elements of the story were rather brilliant and it could have been made into something spectacular instead we got this hot mess of cheap trickery with a horrible childish ending.

Avoid.
Fun fact:
The test screenings for the movie were pretty bad and the studio demanded drastic changes especially to the ending but director/writer Alex Garland refused to make any changes.
Sometimes it's good to stick to your guns but as evident here sometimes it would be good to listen to some constructive criticism.
