Title: Places I Loved to Visit or Would Love to Visit
Post by: Zzzptm on April 17, 2020, 02:01:43 PM
Stuck at home... true...

But I would love to be able to go back to Vienna, Austria. Such a wonderful city, I love the transport and mix of architecture there. The coffee-house experience is one of the most pleasing I've ever had. I loved visiting there, and if I had a chance to live there, I'd think less than twice about such an offer.

How about you?

I lived for a little longer then a year in Maui Hawaii in my early twenties. I would love to go back and visit!!!
Nothing quite like a tropical island.

What was that like, living there every day? Were you working, or just having a gap year?

It was truly an experience to remember. It was so warm but there were trade winds constantly that made it very comfortable. And the air itself was so clean and beautiful to just really inhale and exhale. Little to no air pollution, at least when I was there.
I was working for the father of an old girlfriend and his associates. I was doing a lot of construction and landscaping, while learning to manage a ranch as her father wanted me to replace him. He once said to me "all this will be yours" referring to the ranch and three other properties. I actually had a real chance of being a wealthy landowner had I toughed it out and had I not fallen completely out of love with his daughter.
All that aside though I really would like to go back and visit - I imagine it has changed a lot in the last 25 years.

I've not travelled much really, I've been to Dublin in Ireland, bits of France and several places in Florida (Orlando, Miami / Fort  Lauderdale, St Petersburg / Tampa as well as seeing a Shuttle Launch).

I would like to go to various places: Australia, New Zealand, Canada some ancient places like Machu Picchu, Greek, Roman and Egyptian sites. Iceland for it's geology.

I'm not a sun seeker so I would probably just check out those old sites, nature (watching) and sites of geological interest... active volcanoes would be great... from a distance!!

Ultimately, but I don't think it will happen, I'd like to go to space.

I’ve never lived anywhere else but in Melbourne. But it’s funny you mention Vienna or Austria. I backpacked around Europe for 3 months in 2000. I spent 2 weeks in Vienna and also 3-4 days in Salzburg  and absolutely adored it there for the same reasons you mention. More Salzberg than Vienna because of its picturesque mountains and even more chilled vibe but I loved Austria in general and often remarked on my return that I’d love to live there. Scotland was another country where I felt the same.

Also I’ve travelled to the US a few times and love absolutely love it there also. I could live in SF, or somewhere in Texas, New York City or even LA but that novelty might ware off much quicker than other places.

Kinda didn’t read the thread title. Thought it was more about places you’d like to live or lived.

Anyhow thinking about the places I’ve visited, within Australia I’ve pretty much done the whole east coast to further up north to tropical Queensland inc Hamilton Island and The Great Barrier Reef.

Abroad I’ve stayed in the following cities/places for one night or more...

Vietnam(Saigon, Can Tho)
London
Liverpool
Edinburgh
Amsterdam
Vienna
Salzburg
Berlin
Munich
Rome
Milan
Barcelona
Paris
Honolulu
LA
San Diego
Arizona(Grand Canyon)
Las Vegas
Bishop
Death Valley
Yosemite National Park
San Fransisco
Dallas
Fort Worth
Houston
Tampa Bay
Orlando

Would go to all those places again. Other places I’d like to go would be Canada and explore more of the USA and Europe.

Ever since I was little I've wanted to visit Iraq and Antarctica. Iraq for the history and Antarctica for the lack of civilization.

I don't see either happening, but I'm OK with that.

My wife and I used to go to Kauai but haven't been able to for a long time and I doubt we'll make it back. It isn't as big of a tourist spot as some of the other islands. I got a tattoo in Kapa'a during one visit, and a guy there used the phrase "newlyweds and nearly deads" to describe the people that visit Kauai. Everything seemingly closed at 6pm, the pace was definitely "Hawaii time", and the sense of being insignificant in the face of nature while at the same time being part of it was strong there. An important factor was that we never stayed in a town (not that there are very many). We would rent a place that was out in the woods (or jungle guess).

As it stand right now, I want to visit my bed. It has been one of those 15 hour work days, even though I'm lucky enough to be working from home I cooked.

In the "don't think that's gonna happen" category, I want to be able to go to Tashkent to see the international buzkashi tourneys that take place around Nowwuz, the Persian New Year.

Buzkashi is the one game where the participants have to be told in advance if they're allowed to use firearms or not. In the internationals, it's not allowed, but there are a number of Afghan matches where they do. Single-shot only, of course. Automatic would be unsportsmanlike.

But ofcourse that'll never happen but that's THE place for me.

Should that happen or not, you can still imagine one of the best places in NYC to get a slice of pizza - Two Bros Pizza.

The shops are simple. They open up, people go in and buy 2 slices of cheese and a soft drink for $3. Excellent pizza at 10 times the price! The hitch is that there's nowhere to sit except on the grocery store crates scattered on the back area of the store. You can stand at a counter and eat your slices, should you not mind standing. But it's awesome pizza, and I always look forward to hitting those places every time I go.

Photo of the first one of these I ever ate at, should you click this link: https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-a-2-bros-dollar-pizza-store-in-midtown-manhattan-in-new-york-is-seen-35766654.html

One of my favorite business trips was up to Vancouver, and I honestly will jump at any chance to go back up there. Wonderful climate, great food, very walkable city. My favorite restaurant that wasn't seafood was Pinche Tacos. One for the name, it's pretty funny in Mexican Spanish, and two for the amazing al pastor tacos with pineapple salsa.
