Title: TV/Movie News
Post by: KiloDeltaCharlie on March 04, 2020, 01:41:24 PM
Just a new thread to discuss movie/TV and related events.

The first bit of news to post is that due to the virtual shutdown of far eastern cinemas due to the Coronavirus precautions the next James Bond film - No Time to Die - has been pushed back 7 months. It was scheduled to be released early-mid April and will now be released mid-late November when they hope the situation will have calmed down a bit.

While November was lightly programmed April now has a huge hole in it, as nothing was opening against it in the UK (3rd April) or the US (10th April), it might be too late to move something into the vacant spot.

I haven't told the girlfiend yet, she's going to be really dissapointed, expect tantrums! ;)

It is interesting that it begins to effect movie premiers too...

I wonder what other sping blockbusters are gonna be pushed back....

That's the list so far.

Groups doing live-streaming of performances in empty halls... that makes for a very short tour, among other things. Could you imagine getting a t-shirt with just one date on the back?

While I can't say it will bother me too much, but Peter Rabbit 2 has been pushed back to the end of the summer due to the coronavirus situation.

A cinema chain in Northern Ireland has decided to sell tickets but only for every second seat... so you can't sit next to someone else... I can't see couples on date night or parents with little kids going for that!

Two further big films have been pushed back today: Fast & Furious 9 has been put back to April 2021! A Quiet Place II and a couple of smaller movies have been delayed but don't have alternative dates yet.

I'm starting to think any big releases in the next 2 or 3 months are likely to get delayed. Smaller films or those with limited appeal outside the US seem to be hanging on perhaps hoping to get bigger returns as a result.

Netflix Australia has taken away the 30 day free trial.

These movies intended for wide cinema release will have to be drip fed out over time.

The consequences of this pandemic is gonna have an everlasting effect on so many industries.
Title: Re: TV/Movie News
Post by: Zzzptm on March 14, 2020, 08:38:25 AM
Yeah, no free trials when EVERYBODY wants to stream. Netflix has to pay for that bandwidth, so they're getting in position to generate the necessary revenue.

Impact on industries... yes. Lots. Never mind the directly hit industries like travel and tourism - loads of firms are dealing with supply chain issues and general downtime due to employee sickness and/or quarantine.

But that part I'd say would be for another thread. Back to the TV and movies, I know that production on reality series has halted, including The Grand Tour. TGT S5 E2 looks like it'll still get released, but live shooting of a number of these series won't resume until the COVID-19 business is passed.

All movie theaters in the whole dang world, pretty much are closed between March 18th and April 13th.

Fixed that for you. :smug:

My wife and kids wanted to see the new Pixar movie and were talking about driving 90 miles to a town not yet shut down. I told them, no, now is not the time to travel. The quarantine has begun, we need to stay inside and be neither exposed nor exposers.

Yup, most if not all cinemas in the UK have now closed for at least the next 4 weeks.

My local went from having a reduced schedule (late starts and early finishes) on Tuesday AM to being completely closed by Tuesday lunchtime.

I might have to fire up my NOW TV box alongside my Amazon Prime and Netflix!

Big national confinement began today for a minimum of two weeks.
The government asked the most known encrypted channel here, Canal +, to broadcast its programs in clear. Movies, Sport and tv shows are accessible. Not bad.

Late night shows in the USA are either suspending production or doing shows without an audience.

These are guys whose material typically demands audience interaction. Seth Meyers' news-like delivery works the best without an audience, but the others have jokes that just fall flat if there's no audience reaction. They have to learn how to be YouTubers instead of broadcasters if they want to keep going without a live audience...

Makes me sad to think that we’ll most likely lose some very iconic actors over the next 5-10 years. Pacino, Hoffman, De Niro, Nicholson, Eastwood are all in their 80’s or very close to.

Great news.

I do think I prefer not to know about these things in advance... but this is so far out I will have forgotten by the time the film is released! I remember watching the otherwise awful This is the End back in 2013 and it had War Pigs in the middle of the film and The End of the Beginning over the closing credits before "13" was released... that perked me up from my slumber!

Ken Osmond sailed off to the afterlife, as did Fred Willard.

I always wanted Wally to beat the shit out of Eddie just one time. Ken played that character perfectly.

I never as much into Fred Willard, but he has certainly been a TV staple for many years.

Cheers, and RIP gentlemen!

I trust you two are drunk! ;)

According to the article it will cover his earlier years, maybe upto about 1980, so no oldies! Someone on the Planet Rock FB page suggested in jest Tom Hardy... but to be honest he wouldn't be a bad choice. I suspect they may go for a new face.
Title: Re: TV/Movie News
Post by: Charger on June 17, 2020, 05:12:42 AM
Tom Hardy is too much of a pretty boy to pull off Lemmy.

A new face might be a way to go.

Truth be told though I am not a big fan of biopics anyways. Either they go too crazy in bending the truth and creating crazy stuff or they go too clean.

Very saddened to hear about that...

My favourites were The Lost Boys, Flatliners, Falling Down (His finest work obviously), A Time To Kill and 8mm...I also did enjoy Batman Forever I think it gets a bad rep for very little reason...beats these new post Nolan Batmans any day any way. Batman & Robin was more camp humor though...too much in the vain of the 60s series and Clooney was almost as bad of a choice as Ben Affleck.

There's a 90minute BBC documentary being broadcast this weekend about the Rockfield Studios in Wales. Some of the greatest albums ever recorded have been made there including Sabbath, Priest, Motorhead... I could go on.

It's called: Rockfield: The Studio on the Farm

I'm sure it will be available elsewhere in due course, but it might concentrate on more commercial bands, but Tony, Ozzy, Robert Plant and Dave Brock are in the credits according to IMDb!

Our local cinema starts showing Tenet this week, with special measures in place to protect against Covid-19. It's the first big release since March in the UK, although they've been open a couple of weeks showing classics or some minor new releases. The girlfiend wants to see the film so I guess we'll be seeing it Friday afternoon. Tenet is the new film from Christopher Nolan so should be worth watching.

^^^ Indeed so sad, and only 43.

I didn't think Black Panther was the best MCU film, but Boseman was the best thing in it and was perfect as the lead. Apart from the 4 MCU films he was in I'm not sure I've seen any of his work, he seemed to be a more serious actor and the super hero stuff was way outside his wheelhouse. I may have to seek out some of his other work.

RIP Chadwick

Well that's Cineworld closed for the forseeable future with 45,000 laid off including 5,500 in the UK. A lack of big films has been blamed for it and the new Bond film being pushed back to April next year was the final straw for them.

Odeon, another UK chain in the UK have said that from next week c25% of their venues will not open during the week, for much the same reason, there's been no indication of any job loses.

My local Vue cinema is showing films still, but durng the week they are not starting until 2pm and final showings are around 9pm

Really gutted for Alec Baldwin.

How could a gun with a live round be anywhere near the set of any film let alone a western! :(
Title: Re: TV/Movie News
Post by: Jack the Stripper on October 23, 2021, 05:54:51 AM
Yeah there’s a few unanswered questions there at the moment. Must’ve been filming a shot where Alec was looking and aiming straight down the camera for the cinematographer to get shot. Bullet apparently passed right through her and hit the director in the shoulder.

Can’t imagine the shock & anguish Alec must be going through. Very sad all round
Title: Re: TV/Movie News
Post by: Charger on October 23, 2021, 06:03:53 AM
Yeah that was quite an interesting incident. Somebody screwed up big time there. Sure Alec Baldwin is a total nutjob with more than few screws loose but I still feel bad for him.

And the thing was they weren't even fiming at the time...seems that it was a scene runthrough or rehearsal.

The need to use real guns on movie/tv show sets is a given ofcourse for authenticity. You can always spot a prop gun miles away and it surely eats away from the credibility of the production. And it does happen more and more lately.

BUT live rounds should not make it to the actual set EVER. Those are used only in weapon use training and that should take place far away from the set. And if there are scenes where actual bullets are used (which I think are rather rare nowadays anyways) those should be filmed totally seperately and with strict supervision. Actors very rarely are professionals or even competent to use weapons.

Sad event especially to  the family of Halyna Hutchins.

Post by: Zzzptm on October 25, 2021, 09:53:24 AM
It looks as though the AD in charge of safety had a few incidents in his past involving oversight and lax precautions. It's very sad for those on this set that he didn't correct those behaviors.

I say take all the guns for movies, seal their barrels at both ends and never load them with anything. All the sound and flash can be added in with post-op foley and effects work.

Let's not. It so deflates the authenticity. Nothing beats an actual firing of a weapon with a real muzzle flash. Blank weapons have been fired millions of times on movie and tv show sets over the course of decades...and there has now been TWO yes TWO fatal incidents. Heck weapons on movie sets have an even worse fatality rate than Covid!

It seems there’s been a massive due diligence failure. Apparently a gun on a movie set is suppose to be checked by 4 people on set before it’s used. The armorist, assistant director, key grip and lastly the actor. This obviously didn’t happen. Also it’s emerged that Alec was practising a cross draw with the gun sitting down at a church pew while the cinematographer and director were setting up the shot and he looked right down the eye of the camera and either accidentally pulled the trigger or purposely pulled the trigger not thinking it was loaded.

To be sure, I've seen movies that used live ammo - the Russian film Come and See and the Indian film Kabul Express are good examples. And the weapons fire in those movies was quite unlike the blank-firing weapons in other films.

Hell, in Kabul Express, the security detail were also extras. They were filming in Afghanistan and the security guys said that if they switched to blanks for a movie scene, that's when they would be most likely to be attacked. So they fired live rounds, including an RPG-7, in all of their scenes.

Maybe people need to act as if EVERY WEAPON IS A LOADED WEAPON and behave accordingly.

New info emerges about there being other accidental discharges on the set of that film prior to the fatal one.

"Safety protocols standard in the industry, including gun inspections, were not strictly followed on the “Rust” set near Santa Fe, the sources said. They said at least one of the camera operators complained last weekend to a production manager about gun safety on the set."

Ok, not exactly news, but I think the pandemic has killed 3D films. I, for one, am okay with this, I've never been a fan. I'm pretty sure that no 3D version of a film has been released in nearly 2 years (in the UK anyway). It's a format that requires theatre revenue to cover the costs and few home theatre systems do 3D justice so it's not worth the expense.

My local cinema used to have 4 of its 14 screens which could handle 3D but I noticed after the lockdowns they've taken the opportunity to remove it from the two big screens leaving just 2 of the medium sized screens able to show them.

As I say, I'm not shedding any tears over the loss, it was never satisfactory in my mind, some films worked better than others, for some films it was just a distraction. I wonder if James Cameron is still pishing forward with 3D for the up coming Avatar sequels?

I simply can't watch 3D movies. My glasses prescription is quite strong, and I can't get both the specs lined up just right to do a movie. If I look at 3D printed material, I just take my glasses off and hold the page close.

Glad to see the backside of 3D movies over here.

Strong rumours swirling around that Bruce Willis is suffering Dementia and is churning out as many(mostly B) movies as he can while he still can. Apparently his lines have to be fed to him through an earpiece while shooting scenes. He turns only 67 on the 19th of this month. Sad

Well that is quite horrible if it indeed is the case.

Bruce has long been one of my favourite action stars...granted he hasn't been doing a lot of good movies lately but his 90s work still holds up and some real stone cold classics there.

If you believe that such a thing exists, then your beliefs are sorely deluded. I know you often bring up what you hold up as factual evidence for said beliefs, but none of it has stood up under scrutiny. It's frequently warmed-over arguments used to justify slavery or other subservient conditions for Blacks and/or arguments invented to justify killing off efforts to eliminate social, economic, and legal barriers that were created to limit the opportunities of Blacks in America. That they are dressed up in cherry-picked factoids lacking context makes them attractive options on first view, but nevertheless do not in any way secure truthfulness for the meritless concepts.

The thing is the punishment did not fit the crime to begin with and then he gets away with a barely a slap on the wrist.

The biggest problem is that he did not get crucified in the media...and that's because he is black...a white person would have been crucified to death in the media. But black's cannot be critized in the media nowadays..at all. And it shows in this case very very well.

I even bet this guy can work again on some major production which would never be the case had he been white.

I don't very often wish harm to other humans but this piece of garbage should be beaten...and I was kind of hoping that might have happened in prison...but no...

Smollett got plenty of flack for it in the media. Perhaps there was media reporting that he wasn't getting flack for it, but he got plenty of it. Now, he also has his supporters - anyone famous has supporters, even Putin - and they've voiced support for him publicly. But Smollett's gotten lots of criticism for setting back both public perceptions of the LGBTQ+ community and the Black community. He got fired from the show Empire after the hoax and hasn't gotten work since. His career is over.

But there are many more miscarriages of justice in the USA beyond this one. For example, Oklahoma recently incarcerated a woman who had a miscarriage on the grounds that she had violated the state's anti-abortion laws.

The crime was not relatively minor.  He was convicted on 5 felony counts of disorderly conduct.  So he actually got only 30 days for each count.  A 3 judge panel voted 2 to 1 to release him while he appealed.  The reason the 2 gave?  He would have served out his sentence before the appeals process had been completed.  Sure he would have served out his sentence, because the damn sentence was so light.

My hope is that now Smollett really gets mugged, there are no witnesses, and nobody believes him.   :))

I agree. I don't want earnest and screechy preaching, even when I agree with what's being preached. I want entertainment. I think it's fine to have some diversity in the casting, just don't make it so obvious in the series that WE ARE BEING DIVERSE. Just let it be.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine had a highly diverse cast, but for most of the series it was just... the cast... Schitt's Creek's approach to diversity was the same: these guys are who they are, let's not preach about it. Just do the funny and let them be natural in their roles.

Title: Re: TV/Movie News

Had a longer post that I made a blog entry. :smug:

Comes down to a few key points:

1. Jada Pinkett-Smith is the executive producer of the project. She got the funding for it together, so she gets to call the shots.
2. While Cleopatra's likeness in sculpture is clearly that of a Classical Greek woman, this Netflix thing is a fictionalized docudrama. They could cast Lucy Liu or Nicole Kidman in the role and it would be just as ahistorical as it is right now.
3. If Shakespeare's rules were still in effect, a young man would be cast in the role of Cleopatra. How society has eroded to the point where we openly and commonly accept the idea of *women* in the acting profession! The very idea! :D
4. This one's a big one. There's a whole debate in Egypt and beyond about the ethnic makeup of ancient Egypt. In a world that itself has negative racial discrimination towards non-Whites, and in particular to those not of a Northwestern European origin, entire nations have been fighting PR battles for the last 200 years to "prove" that they're able to stand on the podium side-by-side with the Colonialist nations' populations. Italians, Greeks, Spaniards, Turks, they've all fought against negative stereotypes. In the USA, Italians have fought against being classified as "Negroes" during Segregation. The Egyptians themselves have struggled with a non-White identity and many in that country want to insist that they're White, not like those "other people" on the other side of the desert.

Egyptology itself has faced a bulwark. As European nations in the 19th Century proceeded to carve up Africa and exploit its mineral, agricultural, and human resources, the idea of civilization emerging there and providing the foundation to Greek civilization was abhorrent to them. And yet, from early on, the connections between all those pyramids and temples and the Blacks of Africa were quite evident. The scholarly solution was to ignore the facts and pretend that Ancient Egyptians were Whites.

The Senegalese scholar Cheikh Anta Diop did a great deal of research to show the African origins of Egyptian civilization - one could start with the Egyptian name for their own land, which translates to "the Black Land" and their name for themselves, which translates to "the Black People." When Diop studied the melanin content of skin cells inside mummy wrappings, it was as high as that of Blacks in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Diop's research has met with shrill rebuttals from people who want to cling to the idea of a Whiter Egypt, be they Eurocentrics that can't condone the idea of European civilization being built upon a Black African foundation, as well as those who want to insist that Egypt itself is White, so that they can hope for some kind of adjacent equality with the Italians, Spaniards, Greeks, and Turks. The thing about a fictionalized version of Cleopatra being Black or White runs a lot deeper than just a note of historical accuracy.

The big problem with this is that for years now the woke dummies have been crying about white people playing roles that haven't been historically accurate...but now that they're doing it, it is supposed to be okay....fuck that. The double standards for those people is ridiculous and it should be called out for what it is.

Gadot also got a lot of backlash for not being right for the role mostly by the woke crowd....it's just stupid.

There's a difference between actual Civil Rights activism and people engaging in virtue-signaling activity. Actual activism is about overcoming barriers, formal and informal, that shouldn't be there. Virtue-signaling is about shouting and pointing and not actually engaging with any solution other than one that involves zero compromise.

I think the virtue-signaling over who plays Cleopatra is as pointless as the virtue-signaling about "wokeism" at M&Ms when the Green M&M character wore comfy shoes.

Now, the issue about casting is a real one. When white actors were chosen, time and time again, to perform in roles where they were made to look like a member of a non-white group, thereby denying work to actors who looked like who the white actor was attempting to portray, *that* was a clear sign of racial bias benefiting white actors and punishing nonwhite actors. In other cases, where race was not specified, many producers simply went with white actors because of inherent biases in their own choices.

In this particular case, there's no attempt to make the actress playing Cleopatra to look like she's Macedonian, so it's not wokeism at play. It's the producer making a conscious choice about what to fictionalize - the series is "Black Queens of Africa", after all, so if a queen is in the series, she's gonna be Black. If they follow up with "Black Queens of England", then Elizabeth I is going to look quite fictionalized in the end product. At the end of the day, Jada Pinkett-Smith wants to showcase actors who she feels deserve a chance to shine and, hopefully, get more work in the future - hopefully overcoming biases against them in the process. I see that as actual, positive activism.

Gadot's case involved critics beyond virtue-signaling-pro-Palestinian leftists. Her critics included a sizable contingent of virtue-signaling-pan-Arabist right-wingers. There are people who believe that Cleopatra was Black, and there are people who believe that Cleopatra was Arab. There are also people who believe Finland doesn't exist. At least the people who believe Finland doesn't exist don't have shrill shouters and pointers to spoil our day, so I tolerate them better. :) And I see the producers' decision to stand with her on the casting choice also as a positive form of activism.

When Shelly Duvall is cast as Muhammad Ali in a movie-bio about him, then I'll stop looking askance at folks who hang their virtue out in such a way that they claim the casting in a mainstream big-budget film has fuck all to do with improving the lives of some marginalized group of people.

Those movies are made for one purpose, and that is to generate as much profit for the production company as possible. There is literally nothing else on the "objective chart". If eating rhino shit would make their profit number larger, they'd all be chowing down every chance they had.

The entertainment industry is smoke and mirrors - it's a fantasy being sold as art. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of legitimate examples of precisely that. But riding the fad de'jour and claiming moral superiority through film-making has a significant representation in that industry.

And propaganda - well, it's as effective as ever.

In the end it's the same thing if someone would make a movie out of Barack Obama and decided to cast a white guy to the role...and oh boy the ammount of shit that would storm up...

But it is what it is...woke can do no wrong...

This is just one of those things that makes me want to boycot netflix even more...but Arnold's new show is on there too and that looks like a shitload of fun...goddamn.

Yeah he went missing in January when there was a huge storm in the area. It was pretty big news at the time.

Truly a shame indeed. He was a great bad guy actor.

Ghostbusters was supposed to come out in December, but I guess it got pushed back by the SAG strike, that now seems to be resolved.

The final episode of the Grand Tour has finished filming and will be shown sometime in the new year.

They think the show may re-appear in a new format with another service!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-67572414 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-67572414)

This comes about 2-weeks after the BBC announced that Top Gear will be rested for the foreseeable future after Andrew Flintoff was seriously injured filming for the show.

Well to be honest that show died when the Three Amigos left. I tried to watch it after but there just was no magic in it... I remember Matt trying his best but he wasn't a good fit either. That show always was 20% about the cars and 80% about James, Richard and Jeremy and when they left so did 80% of what made Top Gear Top Gear.

I too am sure the show will return again at some point with a new set of hosts but again it will fail. Such magic just cannot be reproduced.

And just now the word is that also THE GRAND TOUR will end!

https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/grand-tour-james-may-jeremy-clarkson-richard-hammond-b2455937.html (https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/grand-tour-james-may-jeremy-clarkson-richard-hammond-b2455937.html)

The trio has just finished filming the very last episode in Africa and that will air early next year.

This is a bit of a shock really. But I guess they have all kind of moved on to other things. Clarkson has his farm (which isn't doing very well), Hammond has the Smallest Cog which I gather IS actually doing very well, growing business atleast and May has his Our Man show and his pub and Gin business so I guess they simply don't have the time to do a big show anymore and go on trips for weeks and weeks at a time.

I will miss the show immensly though.

I think they're at a point in their lives where they don't want to be risking death all that often. Hammond, especially, needs to quit while he's winning. But May's also racked up a number of crashes and likely much prefers the travel show trade to driving like a yobbo.

I rarely go to the movie theater but I am a major Ghostbusters fan so I think I will go and I hope this is a great addition to the franchise

I will say that it is impossible for them to top the first film but it still could be fun to watch them try 😉

^^^

I quite liked the second one as well.

It would make a nice change for Cage to do something more mainstream. Recently he's done some good work but it's either been in arthouse projects which no ones sees, or zany films which are a difficult sell!
