Title: Mount Rushmore of Singers!
Post by: Charger on February 18, 2020, 09:43:49 AM
So saw this on Facebook and thought it might be a fun one:

My picks would be:

RONNIE JAMES DIO

IAN GILLAN
ALICE COOPER
ROB HALFORD

Ronnie obivously was the greatest singer ever and he deserves to be there more than anyone else.

Ian, Alice and Rob have all had amazing careers and are still preforming well...Alice probably has held up the best, but both Ian and Rob still have a great mid range, although Ian has learned to use it better than Rob who still tries to do some of the high notes which he just can't do anymore.

I know Freddy Mercury is a great singer and many consider him among the best but honestly I was never that huge of a Queen fan so he would never make it to my mount rushmore.

Bruce Dickinson fought with Rob on the fourth place though...

From the "younger" generation I'd choose Tim "Ripper" Owens, Blaze Bayley, Jon Oliva and Robert Lowe I think...Joey Belladonna would most certainly be in the mix too with Doro Pesch...

Who'd you choose?

You can also do one for metal and one for other genres or you can combine genres too, but for me Metal is closest to my heart so metal only it was for me.

Ian Gillan is already up there, top left:

:smug:

I'd also vote for Dio, and if we're keeping this to hard rock/metal, I'd also want Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale. I'd want them, but I don't know if I'd *get* them.

And I know not everyone here likes the Zep, but I gotta hand it to their vocalist...

:plant:

He *does* sing very, very well.

Nod also to Rod Stewart for his work with Faces and Paul Rogers of Free/Bad Company/The Firm.

Just remembered THE Freddie Mercury, he needs to be considered, along with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith.

Ozzy most certainly deserves a spot on Mt. Rushmore along with Ronnie and the other guys you mentioned.

Nah didn’t forget him. I just like the others and or their respective bands more.

I think he should be on there for Born Again alone.

As big of an Ozzy fan as I am I still would never put him on top of any singers lists. He just isn't THAT good of a singer. He's a great preformer but he is NOT a great singer.

^^The same could be said for Alice Cooper. He was never an outstanding singer with the range and versatility of a Dio, Gillan or Halford. He just made good with what he had and was a great performer/entertainer and has kept it up for a long time.

Well yeah you do make a good point. But he is still much more versatile than Ozzy I think. But yeah, nowhere near Ronnie or Ian...or Rob...

I think Ozzy deserves to be there for his legacy alone, with Sabbath and solo, he’s still putting out albums and was just recently touring till he had to take care of his health, and what constitutes a good singer is all a matter of opinion. You and I both think Blaze is a good singer others think he’s boring and just doesn’t make it, all opinions.

Is this for singers or for showmen? If we're having a Rushmore for showmanship, Alice Cooper's up there for sure.

If it's for people that can do-re-mi their way around a scale and make me cry for joy having heard it, yeah, maybe not Mr. Cooper.

Then again, there are guys like Geoff Tate that have great range and all, but there's no *fire* in what they're doing to make the technique stand out as something really precious and exceptional. Range alone does not a good singer make.

Meat Loaf is an awesome vocalist, with some amazing abilities. True, he's a ballads man more than a rocker, but he can still rock out. And he can really turn a musical phrase, as well. To me, a Rushmore singer would have to have that same level of performance. I do think Ian Gillan matches that, so does Dio. Plant's got my vote, as well. I'm holding off on Glenn Hughes, as he still needs to do time for some of those cocaine shrieks back in the 70s. But I do vote Paul Rodgers.

Yeah, I don't know...emotive impact or technical ability? Both? 80/20? Meh. I'll make it easy on myself and just list a few of my favs from the rock/metal scene.

1. Dio.
2. Mick Jagger.
3. Robin Zander.
4. Paul Rodgers.

They used to play this a lot on the radio, many moons ago:

^^Thats all I did, picked my favourites.

Ozzy certainly ticks the emotive box, more than most.

Ozzy most certainly deserves it more than anyone, him and Ronnie, that’s for sure, 100%.

Someone voted for Mike Patton? JSTC must be posting! Hey, buddy, what's up?

And I was thinking about Jagger, Vyn's link got me leaning hard towards either voting for him or expanding the list to my top 344 favorite singers, just so I can put 'em all on the list.

I put Plant instead of Ian, because technically Ian’s on there already.

Thanks Z, I pop in every once in awhile to see whats going down. Of course I gotta put my vote in for Patton. Maybe it could be a Mount Rushmore with just different eras of Patton!
