Title: Making Playlists
Post by: Zzzptm on September 27, 2019, 04:01:00 PM
Got a 16GB USB drive that I want to fill up with songs. Rather than just dump a ton of MP3s on there and walk away, I want to build out individual folders. Each one should have a general theme, like it's a radio station playlist or something. 20 songs and then I move to the next folder. I want the song collections to be ones that I'm not the only one that would enjoy them, so if someone else in my family is driving that car, they'd either want to listen to those songs or fall back on them when all the radio stations play commercials AT THE SAME TIME...

My first folder goes like this:

01. Breakdown - Tom Petty
02. Bungle in the Jungle - Jethro Tull
03. Don't Stop - Fleetwood Mac
04. Feels Like the First Time - Foreigner
05. Fire Down Below - Bob Seger
06. Free Ride - Edgar Winter
07. Go For a Soda - Kim Mitchell
08. The Heart of Rock & Roll - Huey Lewis
09. Hey Hey What Can I Do - Led Zeppelin
10. I Thank You - ZZ Top
11. Keep On Rockin Me Baby - Steve Miller Band
12. Let's Go - The Cars
13. Long Train Running - The Doobie Brothers
14. Middle of the Road - Pretenders
15. Movin' On - Bad Company
16. Point of Know Return - Kansas
17. Skateaway - Dire Straits
18. Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd
19. Take It Easy - The Eagles
20. Spirit of Radio - Rush

Oh yeah, the songs will play in alphabetical order, by title, because that's how my car MP3 player goes. :smug:

Now, one thing I want to avoid is falling into a rut where I play the same songs, in the same order, that I've done on other mixtapes/playlists, and that's where you all come in. I'm up for suggestions, even if it's not 20 songs all together, it could be 3 or 4 or 5 that make for a good theme that I could build off of, but the combination comes out of your mind, not mine.

Duplicates are fine, don't worry if the song has been on a list somewhere else. But in the interests of keeping this general-interest, I'm not putting on thrash metal (or heavier), spacerock jamming, experimental music, or electronica. Folk, prog, funk, soul, oldies - all those are fair game, along with general rock and roll. Metal just this side of thrash (especially with that 80s feel my wife and I grew up with) is fine. I don't have to have all hits - deep cuts will be considered.

This is going to take a while because I calculate I can get about 200 folders of 20 songs on the drive... so, yeah, any help is appreciated.  :twitch:

My second one... started with "Martha My Dear" and added others that I thought would go with it, a salute to 70s British Rock.

03. Blowin' Free - Wishbone Ash
04. Custard Pie - Led Zeppelin
05. Don't Stop Me Now - Queen
06. Every Picture Tells a Story - Rod Stewart
07. Gudbuy T'Jane - Slade
08. Have A Cigar - Pink Floyd
09. Heroes - David Bowie
10. I Can't Explain - The Who
11. Laser Love - T Rex
12. Layla - Derek & the Dominoes
13. Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix
14. Martha My Dear - The Beatles
15. Ride My See Saw - The Moody Blues
16. Rock and Roll Queen - Mott the Hoople

Almost 20 years ago I made a bunch of mix cds for playing in my vehicles.  27 cds I classify as hard rock (Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, L7, Ozzy, Nirvana, etc.), and 28 cds I classify as general rock (Rolling Stones, Blue Oyster Cult, Jethro Tull, the Who, etc.).  Even though the songs are always in the same order, there are so many that it does not bother me.

Side note: The very last song on the final general rock cd #28 is the Beatles - The End  :)

That's a cool touch at the end... play "The End". :D

Just did an 80s list:

01. Cars - Gary Numan
02. Dance Hall Days - Wang Chung
03. Don't Go - Yaz
04. Eleven Plus Eleven - Nine Below Zero
05. Fascination - The Human League
06. Heart of Glass - Blondie
07. Heaven Is a Place on Earth - The GoGos
08. It's About Time - The Pandoras
09. Love Is a Stranger - Eurythmics
10. New Rose - The Damned
11. Now - The Plimsouls
12. Rain - The Cult
13. She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals
14. Spellbound - Siouxsie and the Banshees
15. Strobelight - The B-52's
16. Telegram Sam - Bauhaus
17. This Corrosion - The Sisters of Mercy
18. Through Being Cool - Devo
19. We Close Our Eyes - Oingo Boingo
20. With Or Without You - U2

Definitely got a good goth sampling in there, kind of a moodier side of the 80s.

Inspired by the old Z-Rock station:

01. Ace of Spades - Motorhead
02. Burn - Deep Purple
03. Caught in a Mosh - Anthrax
04. Die with Your Boots on - Iron Maiden
05. Everybody Wants Some - Van Halen
06. Evil Eyes - Dio
07. Exciter - Judas Priest
08. Godzilla - Blue Oyster Cult
09. Gone - Iommi-Hughes
10. Helpless - Metallica
11. Here I Go Again (Original Version) - Whitesnake
12. No One Like You - Scorpions
13. Reign of Fire - Armored Saint
14. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - Black Sabbath
15. Same Old Situation - Motley Crue
16. The Threat Is Real - Megadeth
17. Thunderhead - Overkill
18. Watch the Children Pray - Metal Church
19. Wheels of Steel - Saxon
20. You Got Me Runnin' - Fastway

"Ace of Spades" because I was thinking of The Young Ones from "Eleven Plus Eleven" in the earlier list, "Exciter" because JtS mentioned it in his 3x3x3 list, "Here I Go Again" because the original version is just awesome, and "You Got Me Runnin" because my wife and I played the hell out of that Fastway tape when we first met.
