Title: Your Top 3 LEAST favourite Songs?
Post by: Charger on August 19, 2019, 07:49:44 AM
I don't recall if we've ever really done anything like this...even on the "other" place...so I thought it might be fun to do one here...one era at a time.

So pick your 3 LEAST favourite songs from the Ozzy era. And I'd like to hear some explanations as well ofcourse.

We can then end up picking the songs that get the most mentions in a poll to decide the ultimate turd of the Black Sabbath catalogue.

My 3 are

3. Changes
(The biggest cheesy ballad Sabbath has ever done, a very boring song with silly lyrics and a very bland vocal preformance from Ozzy...compared to the Solitude and Planet Caravan this is like a joke song)

2. God Is Dead
(Song plagued by an intro that goes on and on and on and on for more than half the length of the song...ridiculous...not to mention the fact that it's boring and repetetive without any build up of any kind...and then when it does pick up how does it do it? By rip-off riff...how Tony could do something like this is beyond me...)

1. Am I Going Insane
(Without a doubt THE worst song in the entire Black Sabbath catalogue. There's nothing good about this song NOTHING. It just simply sucks, this song was the start of Sabbath decline for sure. I still ponder what went on in their heads when they decided to record a song like this...my guess is nothing but cocaine. Horrible song through and through)

Okay your turn.

I can't argue with those choices there Charger... I would probably reverse the order though.

I might add Never Say Die in 4th place! It's just sooo generic.

1. Air Dance - lots of parts in the song, nothing really holding them together and, what the hell, how about some jazz fusion?

2. You Won't Change Me - so forgettable, I had to think, "What was the title of the tune after 'Back Street Kids'? Man, I hate that one..." I had to look up the title because I never listen to it if I can help it.

3. Who Are You - I can sum up how I feel about this track with an image:

That's a good bad list there zzz....

Can't say I like any of those songs...but to me they are forgettable and bland but as such they don't really stir enough of any emotions really to include them in top 3.

I can easily understand Paranoid too. On all possible accounts that song is not a good song. It's simple, the lyrics are stupid, it has NOTHING to do with being Paranoid and it was written as a filler in like 30 minutes for heaven's sake...and it has been absolutely overplayed to death. BUT I can also fully understand why it became a classic as well...because it is catchy, it is short and the riff is silly simple. Those kinds of songs very often become classics because they are easy on the ear. Without a doubt it is the weakest song on the album...but look at the songs it's up against too...

Typhon I'd be very interested in seeing your list especially knowing your love for the this era.

I love Air Dance and You Won't Change Me is my favourite track on the (admittedly forgetable) TE. And while not great, Who Are You? is far from their worst effort in my opinion.

Paranoid is just over exposed... otherwise it's a great song.

^^^^^^
Very sensible post, KDC.
-----------------------------

1. It's Alright
2. She's Gone

I am having a great deal of difficulty coming up with a third choice.  There isn't anything else in this era that I dislike or even would call "bland".

I am just so sick of hearing Paranoid and it really is not that great to begin with. Just so over exposed and completely banal IMHO!!

Well, that's an explanation. Myself, I love the opening riff and the thundering throughout.

Agreed.

it has NOTHING to do with being Paranoid ...
Listen to the lyrics.  The guy is obviously paranoid, Dr. Charger.   :)

Trying to come up with a least favourite 3 is hard for me, even some of my least favourites have a transistion, breakdown or melody I like.

FX - Just such a mindless and meaningless track

It's Alright - Not a bad song by any stretch, just never really connected much with it, maybe if Ozzy had've sung on it it might've been a different story.

Rock 'n' Roll Doctor - Never done much for me, gets to the chorus too quick and it repeats too much. The piano is the only cool and interesting thing about the song.

No real roasting needed from me, I'll wait for the generic & cheesy Tony Martin for that.

^ I left out FX and other "filler" instrumentals because there's not much of them there for them to be... *there*. "Break Out" is a really lumbering tune that has all the elegance of a steamroller going over a high curb... DA DA DA .... DAAAAAAAAAAAAH

For the Martin era, I'd suggest choosing three near-miss songs, since there's quite a lot of material from that lineup that just doesn't measure up.

If I must choose a 3rd undesirable, then I will go with Changes.  I really don't mind it, but I will say that at 4:45, it is probably a minute too long for such a slow song.

Also, I have always enjoyed the filler instrumentals.  Breakout, FX, you name it.  It is like I can't even listen to the song that follows without the corresponding filler first.

And I find Rock 'n' Roll Doctor to be a great pick-me-up (you surprise me, Jack).  It seems like too many people around here expect every song to be epic.  I guess that's the price you pay when so much of this era is that good.

For me, "Rock 'n' Roll Doctor", "Back Street Kids" and "All Moving Parts" are the three tracks from TE that are the most listenable. The rest I set aside.

FX is an oddball...a non track really.

Also I guess I should have clarified that I meant this list to be about "actual" songs not instrumentals...as I kind of don't think of them as songs anyways. Well maybe Fluff as it is so freaking long. That would have actually been on my list had I not been in the mind set of songs with lyrics only...

I remember your dislike for Rock 'n Roll Doctor Jack....I don't actually mind it...the cowbell is bit too much but other than that it's a nice rock song...intentionally cheesy I think. Also Ian Gillan's version is far superior to Ozzy's.

^ Agree on Rock 'n' Roll Doctor being better suited for Gillan. Whereas, Iron Man... oooh, you're gonna want Ozzy to sing THAT one!

It's not that I dislike RnRD that much its just that a I had to come up with 3 least favourites which I struggle to do with the Ozzy era and it's a song that I find to be a bit stock and formulaic and just doesn't quite hit the spot with me.

I do agree, it is one of the few Ozzy era songs that's improved by another singer.

Well EVERY single song done by Ozzy was IMPROVED by any other singer BUT did all those songs fit to their voice and did they sound as unique that's another matter. ;)

^^That above statement is so far off the mark its not funny!  :-X

Original Sabbath era songs never sounds right without the original band. That is an indisputable fact!

I pretty much want Dio to stick to Dio-era material. That's the only stuff off of Live eviL that I can stand, with the exception of the finale, which comes as the end of "Heaven and Hell".

Gillan did a good job with the more casual numbers and Dio's material, but was the wrong guy for the doom-ier numbers.

Martin is best with Martin/Dio material.

Let Ozzy do Ozzy's stuff.
