Title: Game of Thrones Finale Fan Reaction - No Spoilers
Post by: Zzzptm on June 19, 2019, 11:39:53 AM
So, I didn't watch GoT, but I heard from here and there that the finale was disappointing for most viewers, along with much of Season 8.

My thought on that... they were betrayed by a show that was about betrayals. Should have seen that coming.

Even so, I know that people watch a show to be entertained and that a proper wrap-up is entertaining. Even so, there could have been worse endings, like John Snow waking up and discovering it was *all a dream...*

Harry Potter had the big finish it did because J.K. Rowling finished the books. GoT went off the rails I'm guessing because the last two seasons had to go where GRRM hadn't yet been.

I didn't watch GoT either, but my wife did. She wasn't disappointed in the past couple of seasons and felt the finale was fine.

She watched it for entertainment value, and doesn't know who George Martin is. I think most of the criticism concerning the past two seasons as well as the finale were/are from people who have much more of themselves invested in the show.

I will freely admit that I have not read any of Martin's works. Somehow I have managed to (unintentionally) avoid them. So I can't really comment on whether his writing style is intricate and detailed or fast paced, superficial action. I gather from folks I know who are fans of his that his writing style is the former.

Serial television programs have to be released on a reliable schedule, so I can see how GRRM falling behind in his writing compared with that schedule would be problematic. As you mentioned, and I agree, since GRRM hadn't finished the book series yet it just went off the rails.

Indeed. I haven't read them either. My wife started on the first one and when she hit incest on p.5 or something like that, put the book aside.
