Title: Speed King... Which Intro Is Best?
Post by: Zzzptm on February 13, 2018, 08:12:29 PM
There's quite a few versions of "Speed King"...

The one where the song just starts, no instrumental intro. That's the original US release.

The one where Jon Lord plays a keyboard intro. That's the one from Deepest Purple.

The one where there's an avalanche of sound, some guitar noodling, then Jon Lord's quiet solo. That's the original UK version.

So which one is best? I kind of like it to just BAM! START! The ones with opening instrumentals are OK, but the instrumentals really don't have anything to do with the main song, which is so focused and aggro in contrast to the chaos of the guitar opening or the quietness of the keyboard cadenza.

I Like the original best, always have liked a nice build up to a rock tune.

The one that just goes straight in was originally released by mistake. It was a studio outtake :);):)

Sometimes, mistakes are happy mistakes!

Yes I agree, mistakes often are good. We would have had to wait for the expanded version of "In Rock" if not for this mistake  :) ;) :)

I agree about the original but I wasn't aware that the version which starts just before the vocals was a studio outtake.  I used to have that version on a Canadian LP issue of DPIR.
