Title: 15 Greatest Album Closers!
Post by: Charger on March 04, 2019, 10:28:03 AM
Well this was to be expected... awhile back we had the 15 greatest openers now we have 15 greatest closers:

Again very very flawed list...

So I'll make my own...

15. I Go Insane - IOMMI/Hughes
14. Diary Of A Madman - Ozzy Osbourne
13. Rust In Peace...Polaris - Megadeth
12. Orgasmatron - Motörhead
11. A Sorcer's Pledge - Candlemass
10. Cathedral Spires - Judas Priest
9. Stare At The Sun - Blaze Bayley
8. A Light In The Black - Rainbow
7. Bury Me In Smoke - Down
6. Hallowed Be Thy Name - Iron Maiden
5. Space Truckin' - Deep Purple
4. High Water Mark - Iced Earth
3. The Hourglass - Savatage
2. Egypt (The Chains Are On) - DIO

1. Lonely Is The Word - Black Sabbath

Only 2 songs from that Loudwire list made it into mine...

The thing about a great closer is that it needs to be atleast somewhat epic. Almost all (part from Space Truckin' which is just a kick ass tune) here fit the mark...they all clock over 5 minutes some over 9 minutes and one (High Water Mark) even clocks 12 minutes.

The closing track of Blaze's first solo album Silicon Messiah is still my favourite tune from him...including everything he did with Maiden and Wolfsbane...that song is so packed with emotion it's crazy...

Down's best ever song is still the closer from their first album, which has a riff that just blows most riffs straight away...

Cathedral Spires was probably the most complex composition of Judas Priest up till Nostradamus and it has held the test of time extremely well...Tim's vocal preformance on the song still gives me chills every time I hear it.

There is also a whole lot of emotion going on in my picks...The Hourglass from Savatage is probably one of the most intensly emotional songs ever made and it brings the story on Wake Of Magellan to a perfect close. One of the most powerful tracks ever made I'd say...Not to mention Lonely Is The Word ofcourse which is packed with emotion and Tony's solo is just out of this world...this song has his finest solo ever.

Naturally a bunch of great closers needed to be left out as well...but this is the best of the best I'd say...

If you have different opinions or want to make a list of your own feel free to do so!

I'm inclined to agree that closers work best if they have an "epic" feel about them, but it's not essential.

15. Buried Alive - Black Sabbath
14. Brainsaw - Therapy?
13. The Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
12. Seasons In The Abyss - Slayer
11. Down In The Tube Station At Midnight - The Jam
10. Rime of the Ancient Mariner - Iron Maiden
9.   Curtain Call - The Damned
8.   Vanity - New Model Army
7.   Fairies Wear Boots - Black Sabbath
6.   Hallowed Be Thy Name - Iron Maiden
5.   Awaken - Yes
4.   Spiral Architect - Black Sabbath
3.   The Outlaw Torn - Metallica
1=.  Clear The Way (Dec 13th 1862) - Iced Earth *
1=.  Gettysberg 1863 Trilogy - Iced Earth **

*   This is still quite fresh to me so may well drop down in due course.
** As always I treat the Trilogy as one song.

I should also point out that a couple of other Sabbath tracks just missed out: Lonely Is The Word and Over & Over
